दौहित्रश्चैव सोमस्य कथं श्र्वशुरतां गतः
And how did Soma’s grandson attain the state of Śravaśura?
ऋषयो ऽत्र न सुह्यन्ति विद्यावन्तश्च ये जनाः
Here, the sages and those who possess knowledge do not rejoice.
पुनश्चैव निरुध्यन्ते विद्वांस्तत्र न मुह्यति
Again, they are restrained, but the wise one is not deluded there.
तप एव गरीयो ऽभूत्प्रभावश्चैव कारणम्
Austerity alone became the greatest, and power was the cause.
प्रजावानायुषस्तीर्णः स्वर्गलोके महीयते
One who is endowed with offspring and long life, having crossed over, is honored in the heavenly realm.
इत्येते षट् निसर्गाश्च क्रान्ता मन्वन्तरात्मकाः
Thus, these six natural creations, each consisting of a Manvantara, have passed.
एते सर्गा यथा प्राज्ञैः प्रोक्ता ये द्विजसत्तमाः
These creations have been described by the wise, O best of twice-born.
अन्यूनानतिरिक्तास्ते सर्वे सर्गा विवस्वतः
All these creations of Vivasvat are neither less nor more than what has been stated.
एतानेव गुणानेति यः पठन्ननसूयकः
Whoever recites these qualities without malice attains them.
समासव्यासतः सर्गं ब्रुवतो मे निबोधत
Hear from me the account of creation, both in summary and in detail.
मारीचात्कश्यपाद्देवा जज्ञिरे परमर्षयः
From Marīci and Kaśyapa, the gods and supreme sages were born.
भृगवोंऽगिरसश्चैव ते ऽष्ठौ देवगणाः स्मृताः
The Bhṛgus and the Angiras are remembered as eight groups of gods.
साध्याश्य वसवो विश्वे धर्मपुत्रास्त्रयो गणाः
The Sādhyas, Vasus, Viśve, and the sons of Dharma are three groups.
वैवस्वतेंऽतरे ह्यस्मिन्नित्ये ते छन्दजा मताः
In this Vaivasvata interval, those are considered to be born of desire.
एवं सर्गस्तु मारीचो विज्ञेयः सांप्रतः शुभः
Thus, the creation of Marīci should be understood as auspicious at present.
अतीतानागता ये च वर्त्तन्ते सांप्रतं च ये
Those who have passed, those yet to come, and those who exist at present—
भूतभव्यभवन्नाथाः सहस्राक्षाः पुरन्दराः
The lords of past, future, and present, the thousand-eyed Purandaras—
सर्वैः क्रतुशतेनेष्टं पृथक्छतगुणेन तु
All have performed hundreds of sacrifices, each with distinct qualities.
अभिभूयावतिष्ठन्ति धर्माद्यैः कारणैरपि
They prevail and endure, even through causes such as dharma and others.
भूतभव्यभवन्नाथा यथा ते प्रभविष्णवः
The lords of past, future, and present are as powerful as those who are mighty.
भूतभव्यभवद्ध्येत त्समृतं लोकत्रयं द्विजैः
The lords of past, future, and present are remembered by the twice-born as the triad of worlds.
भव्यं स्मृतं दिवं ह्येतत्तेषां वक्ष्यामि साधनम्
The future is remembered as heaven; I will now explain their means of attainment.
भूरिति व्याहृतं पूर्वं भूर्लोको ऽयमभूत्तदा
The syllable 'bhūḥ' was first uttered, and thus this world, Bhūloka, came into being.
भूतत्वाद्दर्शनाच्चैव भूर्लोको ऽयमभूत्ततः
Because of its existence and perception, this world became known as Bhūloka.
भूते ऽस्मिन्भवदित्युक्तं द्वितीयं ब्रह्मणा पुनः
In this world, the word 'bhūvaḥ' was next spoken by Brahmā.
भवनात्तु भुवल्लोको निरुत्तया हि निरुच्यते
From 'bhavana' (becoming), the world Bhuvarloka is so named, according to its etymology.
उत्पन्ने तु तथा लोके द्वितीये ब्रह्मणा पुनः
When that second world was thus produced, Brahmā again uttered it.
अनागते भव्य इत शब्द एष विभाव्यते
For what is yet to come, the word 'bhavya' is recognized as indicating the future.
भूरितीयं स्मृता भूमिरन्तरिक्षं भुवः स्मृतम्
'Bhūḥ' is remembered as the earth, and 'bhuvaḥ' is remembered as the atmosphere.
त्रैलोक्ययुक्तैर्व्याहारैस्तिस्रो व्याहृतयो ऽभवन्
With these three utterances connected to the three worlds, the three Vyāhṛtis came to be.
