एते वत्सविशेषाश्च दोग्धारः क्षीरमेव च
These are the particular calves and milkers, and the milk as well.
ब्रह्मणा प्रथमं दुग्धा पुरा पृथ्वी महात्मना
In the beginning, the earth was first milked by the great-souled Brahmā.
ततः स्वायंभुवे पूर्वं तदा मन्वन्तरे पुनः
Then, in the age of Svāyambhuva, again in that Manvantara—
ततः स्वारोचिषे वापि प्राप्ते मन्वन्तरे ऽधुना
And then, when the Svārociṣa Manvantara arrived, and now—
उत्तमेन तु तेनापि दुग्धा देवानु जेन तु
In that age too, the earth was milked by Uttama, son of a god.
पुनश्च पञ्चमे पृथ्वी तामसस्यान्तरे मनोः
Again, in the fifth Manvantara, during the interval of Tāmasa—
चारिष्टवस्य वै षष्ठे संप्राप्ते चान्तरे मनोः
And in the sixth, during the interval of Cāriṣṭa Manu—
चाक्षुषे चापि संप्राप्ते तदा मन्वन्तरे पुनः
And again, when the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara arrived, in that age—
चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे ऽतीते प्राप्ते वैवस्वते पुनः
When the interval of Cākṣuṣa had passed and the era of Vaivasvata had arrived again,
एतैर्दुग्धा पुरा पृथ्वी व्यतीतेष्वन्तरेषु वै
In those past intervals, the earth was milked by these beings.
एवं सर्वेषु विज्ञेया अतीतानागतेष्विह

पृथोस्तु पुत्रौ विक्रान्तौ जज्ञाते ऽन्तर्द्धिपाषनौ
The two valiant sons of Pṛthu, endowed with supernatural power, were born.
हविर्धानात्षडाग्नेयी धिषणाजनयत्सुतान्
From Havirdhāna and the daughter of Agni, Dhiṣaṇā, sons were born.
प्राचीनबर्हिर्भगवान्महानासीत्प्रजापतिः
Prācīnabarhis, the illustrious one, became a great lord of creatures.
प्राचीनाग्राः कुशास्तस्य तस्मात्प्राचीनबर्ह्यसौ
His sacred grass faced east, therefore he was called Prācīnabarhis.
महतस्तपसः पारे सवर्णायां प्रजापतिः
At the end of his great austerity, the lord of creatures was born from Savarṇā.
सर्वान्प्रचेतसो नाम धनुर्वेदस्य पारगान्
All his sons, known as the Pracetas, mastered the science of archery.
दशवर्ष सहस्राणि समुद्रसलिलेशयाः
For ten thousand years, they remained in the waters of the ocean.
अरक्ष्यमाणामावब्रुर्बभूवाथ प्रजाक्षयः
With no one to protect them, the trees grew unchecked, and there was a decline in living beings.
नाशकन्मारुतो वातुं वृत्तं खमभवद्द्रुमैः
The wind could not blow, and the sky was blocked by the trees.
तदुपश्रुत्य तपसा सर्वे युक्ताः प्रचेतसः
Hearing of this, all the Pracetas, engaged in austerity,
उन्मूलानथ वृक्षांस्तान्कृत्वा वायुरशोषयत्
Then, uprooting those trees, the wind dried them up.
द्रुमक्षयमथो बुद्ध्वा किञ्चिच्छिष्टेषु शाखिषु
Realizing the destruction of the trees, when only a few branches remained,
दृष्ट्वा प्रयोजनं सत्यं लोकसंतानकारणात्
Seeing the true purpose for the continuation of the world,
वृक्षाः क्षित्यां जनिष्यन्ति शाम्यतामग्निमारुतौ
Trees will be born again on earth; let the fire and wind be calmed.
भविष्यज्जनता ह्येषा धृता गर्भेण वै मया
This future generation has indeed been held by me in the womb.
भार्या भवतु वो ह्येषा सोमगर्भा विवर्द्धिता
Let this woman, who carries Soma in her womb and has been nurtured, become your wife.
अस्यामुत्पत्स्यते विद्वान्दक्षो नाम प्रजापतिः
From her will be born a learned and capable Prajapati named Daksha.
अग्निनाग्निसमो भूयः प्रजाः संवर्द्धयिष्यति
He, being equal to Agni in brilliance, will further increase the creation.
संत्दृत्य कोपं वृक्षेभ्यः पत्नीं धर्मेण मारिषाम्
Having restrained his anger towards the trees, he will righteously accept Māriṣā as his wife.
