चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे पूर्वमासीदेतत्पुरा किल
Formerly, in the interval before the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara, this existed.
समत्वं यत्र यत्रासीद्भूमेः कस्मिंश्चिदेव हि
Wherever there was equality of the earth, at any place,
आहारः फल मूले तु प्रजानामभवत्किल
the food of the people was, it is said, roots and fruits.
वैन्यात्प्रभृति लोके ऽस्मिन्सर्वस्यैतस्य संभवः
From Vainya onward, in this world, all this came into being.
पृथुर्दुदोह सस्यानि स्वे तले पृथिवीं ततः
Pṛthu milked the earth for crops in his own hand.
ऋषिभिः श्रूयते चापि पुनर्दुग्धा वसुंधरा
It is also heard from the seers that the earth was again milked.
छन्दासिपात्रमासीत्तु गायत्र्यादीनि सर्वशः
The vessel was the meter, and all the Gāyatrī and other meters.
पुनस्ततो देवगणैः पुरन्दरपुरोगमैः
Then again, by the hosts of gods, with Purandara at their head,
वत्सस्तु मघवानासीद्दोग्धा च सविता विभुः
the calf was Maghavan, and the milker was the mighty Savitṛ.
पितृभिः श्रूयते चापि पुनर्दुग्धा वसुन्धरा
It is also heard from the ancestors that the earth was again milked.
वैवस्वतो यमस्त्वासीत्तेषां वत्सः प्रतापवान्
Among them, the calf was Vaivasvata Yama, powerful in might.
असुरैः श्रूयते चापि पुनर्दुग्धा वसुन्धरा
It is also heard that the earth was again milked by the Asuras.
विरोचनस्तु प्राह्रादिर्वत्सस्तेषां महायशाः
Virocana was the calf for them, and Prahrada, renowned for his greatness, was also among them.
पायसा ते च मायाभिः सर्वे मायाविनो ऽसुराः
They all, skilled in illusion, drew milk by means of magical arts; all the Asuras were masters of illusion.
नागैस्तु श्रूयते दुग्धा वत्सं कृत्वा तु तक्षकम्
It is said that the Nagas milked, making Takshaka the calf.
तेषां वै वासुकिर्देग्धा काद्रवेयः प्रतापवान्
Among them, Vasuki, the powerful son of Kadru, was the one who milked.
तेनैव वर्त्तयन्त्युग्रा महाकाया विषोल्बणाः
With that, the fierce, massive-bodied, poison-filled Nagas sustain themselves.
आमपात्रे पुनर्दुग्धा त्वन्तर्धानप्रियं मही
Again, the earth was milked into a raw vessel for the beloved of hidden wealth.
दोग्धा रजतनाभस्तु पिता मणिधरस्य यः
The one with a silver navel, the father of Manidhara, was the milker.
तेन ते वर्त्तयन्तीति परमर्थतया च ह
By him, they are sustained, so it is said in truth.
ब्रह्मा ब्राह्यास्तु वै दोगधा तेषामासीत्कुबेरकः
Brahma milked for the Brahmins, and Kubera was their calf.
कपालपात्रे निर्दुग्धा ह्यन्तर्द्धनं च राक्षसैः
In a skull vessel, the earth was milked for the Rakshasas, producing hidden wealth.
पद्मपात्रे पुनर्दुग्धा गन्धर्वैश्चाप्स रोगणैः
Again, the earth was milked in a lotus vessel by the Gandharvas and Apsaras.
तेषां वसुरुचिस्त्वासीद्दोग्धा पुत्रो मुनेः शुभः
For them, Vasuruci, the auspicious son of the sage, was the milker.
शैलैश्च श्रूयते दुग्धा पुनर्देवी वसुन्धरा
It is said that the earth was milked again by the mountains.
वत्सस्तु हिमवानासीद्दोग्धा मेरुर्महागिरिः
Himavat was the calf, and Meru, the great mountain, was the milker.
श्रूयते वृक्षवीरुद्भिः पुनर्दुग्धा वसुन्धरा
It is said that the earth was milked again by trees and plants.
कामधुक् पुष्पितः शालः प्लक्षो वत्सो यशस्विनाम्
The blossoming shala tree was the wish-fulfilling cow, and the illustrious plaksha tree was the calf.
सैव धात्री विधात्री च धारणी च वसुन्धरा
She is called Dhātrī, Vidhātrī, Dhāraṇī, and Vasundharā.
चराचरस्य लोकस्य प्रतिष्ठा योनिरेव च
She is the foundation and womb of the world, both moving and unmoving.
