लताः काष्ठाः कलाश्चैव मुहूर्ताः संधिरात्र्यहाः
Creepers, woods, vessels, moments, junctions, nights, and days.
स्थाने स्रोतःस्वभीमानाः स्थानाख्याश्चैव ते स्मृताः
In their places, mighty streams, and those called 'places' are remembered thus.
देवांश्चैव पितॄंश्चैव यौरिमा वर्द्धिताः प्रजाः
Both the portions of the gods and ancestors, and the offspring increased by union.
दक्षो ऽत्रिश्च वसिष्ठश्च सासृजन्नव मानसान्
Daksha, Atri, and Vasiṣṭha created nine mind-born sons.
ब्रह्मा यथात्मकानां तु सर्वेषां ब्रह्मयोगिनाम्
Brahmā, as with his own self, for all those united with Brahman.
संकल्पं चैव धर्म च सर्वेषामेव पर्वतौ
Resolution and righteousness, for all, indeed, on the mountains.
संकल्पाच्चैव संकल्पो जज्ञे सो ऽव्यक्तयोनिनः
From resolution, indeed, resolution was born, that of the one whose origin is unmanifest.
भृगुश्च हृदयाज्जज्ञे ऋषिः सलिलयोनिनः
Bhṛgu was born from the heart, the sage whose origin is water.
पुलस्त्यश्च तथोदानाद्व्यानात्तु पुलहस्तथा
Pulastya was born from udāna, and from vyāna, Pulaha likewise.
इत्येते ब्रह्मणः श्रेष्ठाः पुत्रा वै द्वादश स्मृताः
Thus, these twelve are remembered as the foremost sons of Brahmā.
भृग्वादयस्तु ये सृष्टा न च ते ब्रह्मवादिनः
Those created beginning with Bhṛgu are not speakers of Brahman.
द्वादशैते प्रसूयन्ते सह रूद्रेण च द्विजाः
These twelve are born together with Rudra, O twice-born.
पूर्वोत्पत्तौ पुरा ह्येतौ सर्वेषामपि पूर्वजौ
In the previous creation, indeed, these two were the eldest of all.
विरजेते ऽत्र वै लोके तेजसाक्षिप्य चात्मनः
They shine forth here in the world, having seized brilliance from themselves.
प्रजाधर्मं च कामं च वर्तयेते महौजसौ
They uphold progeny, righteousness, and desire, possessing great energy.
ततः सनत्कुमारेति नाम तस्य प्रतिष्ठितम्
Then, the name Sanatkumāra was established for him.
क्रियावन्तः प्रजावन्तो महर्षिभिरलङ्कृताः
Endowed with action and offspring, adorned by great sages.
ततो ऽसुरान्पितॄन्देवान्मनुष्यांश्चासृजत्प्रभुः
Then the Lord created the Asuras, ancestors, gods, and humans.
प्रजननान्मनुष्यान्वै जघनान्निर्ममे ऽसुरान्
From his loins, he created humans; from his hips, he fashioned the asuras.
सुधायाश्च पितॄंश्चैव देवदेवः ससर्जह
And from nectar, the Lord of gods created the ancestors as well.
सनसश्च मनुष्यांश्च पितृवन्महतः पितॄन्
From the mind, he produced men and, like the ancestors, the great Pitṛs.
ऋचो यजूंषि सामानि निर्ममे यज्ञसिद्धये
He created the Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma Vedas for the accomplishment of sacrifice.
ब्रह्मणस्तु प्रजासर्गं देवार्षिपितृमानवम्
From Brahmā arose the creation of beings: gods, sages, ancestors, and men.
यक्षान्पिशाचान् गन्धर्वान्सर्वशो ऽप्सरसस्तथा
He created the Yakṣas, Piśācas, Gandharvas, and all the Apsarases as well.
अव्ययं वा व्ययञ्चैव द्वयं स्थावरजङ्गमम्
Both the perishable and the imperishable, the moving and the unmoving, he made.
तान्येव प्रतिपद्यन्ते सृज्यमानाः पुनः पुनः
These very beings are repeatedly produced again and again.
तेषामेव पृथक् सूतमविभक्तं त्रयं विदुः
Of these, they know the threefold origin as undivided and distinct.
कर्म स्वविषयं प्राहुः सत्त्वस्थाः समदर्शिनः
Those established in goodness and with equal vision declare action to be according to its own domain.
दिवशब्देन पञ्चैते निर्ममे समहेश्वरः
By the word 'diva', the great Lord created these five.
शर्वर्यां न प्रसूयन्ते पुनस्तेभ्योदधत्प्रभुः
They are not born at night; again, the Lord withdraws them from these.
