धर्मस्य पत्न्यां लक्ष्मयां वै उत्पन्ना सा शुचिस्मिता
She, pure-smiling, was born from Lakṣmī, the wife of Dharma.
उत्तानपादो ऽजनयत्कन्ये द्वे च शुचिस्मिते
Uttānapāda begot two daughters, both pure-smiling.
ध्रुवो वर्षसहस्राणि दश दिव्यानि वीर्यवान्
Dhruva, powerful, spent ten thousand divine years.
त्रेतायुगे तु प्रथमे पौत्रः स्वायंभुवस्य तु
In the first Tretā Yuga, the grandson of Svāyambhu appeared.
तस्मै ब्रह्मा ददौ प्रीतो ज्योतिषां स्थानमुत्तमम्
To him, Brahmā, pleased, granted the highest place among the luminaries.
तस्यातिमात्रामृद्धिं च महिमानं निरीक्ष्य तु
Beholding his extraordinary prosperity and greatness,
अहो ऽस्य तपसो वीर्यमहो श्रुतमहो व्रतम्
Ah, the power of his austerity! Ah, his learning! Ah, his vow!
द्रुवे त्रिदिवमासक्तमीश्वरः स दिवस्पतिः
Dhruva, attached to the heavenly realm, became its lord, the master of heaven.
स्वां छायामाह वै सृष्टिर्भवनारीति तां प्रभुः
The lord declared that his own shadow would be the creation, called Bhavanāri.
दिव्यसंहनना छाया दिव्याभरणभूषिता
Chāyā, with a divine form, adorned with celestial ornaments.
प्राजीनगर्भं वृषभं वृकञ्च वृकलं धृतिम्
She gave birth to Prājīnagarbha, Vṛṣabha, Vṛka, Vṛkala, and Dhṛti.
नाम्नोदारधियं पुत्रमिन्द्रो यः पूर्वजन्मनि
Indra, who in a previous birth was named Udāradhiya, became her son.
एवं मन्वन्तरं युक्त इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्तवान्प्रभुः
Thus, in this Manvantara, the lord attained the position of Indra.
रिपुं रिपुञ्जयाज्जज्ञे वराङ्गी तु दिवञ्जयात्
Ripu was born from Ripunjaya, and Varāṅgī from Divanjaya.
व्यजीजनत्पुष्करिणी वारुणी चाक्षुषं मनुम्
She gave birth to Puṣkariṇī, Vāruṇī, and Manu of the Cākṣuṣa lineage.
एतदाचक्ष्व तत्वेन कुशलो ह्यसि विस्तरे
Describe this in detail and truthfully, for you are skilled in exposition.
तेन सा वारुणी ज्ञेया भ्रात्रा ख्यातिमुपागता
Therefore, know that Vāruṇī became renowned through her brother.
कन्यायां सुमहावीर्या विरजस्य प्रजापतेः
In the maiden of great power, the daughter of Virajas, the lord of progeny,
अग्निष्टुदतिरात्रश्च सुद्युम्नश्चेति वै नव
Agniṣṭuta, Atirātra, and Sudyumna—these three among nine sons,
ऊरोरजनयत्पुत्रान्षडाग्नेयी महाप्रभान्
From her thigh, Āgneya gave birth to six sons of great splendor.
अङ्गात्सुनीथापत्यंवै वेनमेकं व्यजायत
From Aṅga, the son named Vena was born, the offspring of Sunītha.
प्रजार्थमृषयो यस्यममन्थुर्दक्षिणां करम्
For the sake of progeny, the sages churned his right hand.
जनयित्वा सुतं तस्य पृथुं प्रथितपौरुषम्
Having produced a son for him, Pṛthu, famed for his manliness,
स धन्वी कवची जज्ञे तेजसा निर्दहन्निव
He was born armed with a bow and armor, as if burning with brilliance.
पृथुर्वैन्यस्तदा लोकान्ररक्ष क्षत्रपूर्वजः
That Pṛthu, son of Vena, elder among the Kṣatriyas, protected the worlds.
तस्य स्तवार्थमुत्पन्नौ निपुणौ सूतमागधौ
For his praise, the skilled Sūtas and Māgadhas were produced.
प्रजानां वृत्तिकामानां देवैश्चर्षिगणैः सह
For the livelihood of the people, along with the gods and groups of seers,
सर्पैः पुण्यजनैश्चैव पर्वतैर्वृक्षवीरुधैः
With serpents, virtuous beings, mountains, trees, and plants,
प्रादाद्यथेप्सि तं क्षीरं तेन प्राणानधारयन्
He gave them the milk as they desired, and by that they sustained their lives.
यथा महात्मना तेन पूर्वं दुग्धा वसुंधरा
Thus, by that great soul, the earth was first milked.
