गणस्तु तेषां देवानामेकैको ह्यष्टकः स्मृतः
Each group of these gods is regarded as an eightfold assembly.
श्रोता मन्तानुमन्ता च त्वाद्या ह्येते प्रकीर्त्तिताः
The hearer, the thinker, and the approver—these are the first ones mentioned.
सुमनाश्च प्रचेताश्च वनेनः सुप्रचेत्सौ
Sumanas, Pracetas, Vanena, and Supracetas—
विजयः सुजयश्चैव मनस्योदौ तथैव च
Vijaya and Sujaya, as well as Manasyu and Uda, likewise.
भव्या ह्येते स्मृता देवाः पृथुकांश्च निबोधत
These are known as the Bhavyas among the gods; now hear of the Prithukas.
सत्कृतः सत्यदृष्टिश्च जिगीषुर्विजयस्तथा
Satkrita, Satyadrishti, Jighishu, and Vijaya as well.
लेशास्तथा प्रवक्ष्यामि नामतस्तान्निबोधत
Now I shall declare the Leshas by name; listen to them.
ध्रुवो ध्रुवक्षितिश्चैव अत्युतश्चैव वीर्यवान्
Dhruva, Dhruvakshiti, Atyuta, and the mighty Viryavan.
मनोजवो महावीर्यस्तेषामिन्द्रस्तदाभवत्
Manojava and Mahavirya—among them, Indra was then.
सुधामा काश्यपश्चैव वशिष्ठो विरजास्तथा
Sudhama, Kashyapa, Vashishtha, and Viraja as well.
मधुरात्रेय इत्येते सप्त वै चाक्षुषेंऽतरे
Madhuratreya—these seven were in the interval of the Cakshusha.
अग्निष्टुदतिरात्रश्च सुद्युम्नशचेति ते नव
Agnishtut, Atiratra, Sudyumna, and Shaci—these are the nine.
चाक्षुषस्य सुताः ह्येते षष्ठं चैव तदन्तरम्
These are the sons of Cakshusha, and the sixth in that succession.
विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः
In detail and in order, during the interval of Cakshusha and Manu—
तस्यान्ववाये ये ऽप्यन्येतान्नो ब्रूहि यथातथम्
Of those descended from him, tell us truly about the others as well.
यस्यान्ववाये संभूतः पृथुर्वैन्यः प्रतापवान्
From whose lineage was born the mighty Prithu, son of Vena.
उत्तानपादं जग्राह पुत्रमत्रिप्रजापतिः
Atri, the lord of progeny, took Uttānapāda as his son.
स्वायंभुवेन मनुना दत्तो ऽत्रेः कारणं प्रति
Uttānapāda was given to Atri by Manu, the son of Svāyambhu, for a particular purpose.
षष्ठं तदनु वक्ष्यामि उपोद्धातेन वै द्विजाः
Next, I will describe the sixth, with a brief account, O twice-born.
धर्मस्य कन्या सुश्रोणी सूनृता नाम विश्रुता
Dharmā’s daughter, renowned as Sūnṛtā, possessed beautiful hips.
धर्मस्य पत्न्यां लक्ष्मयां वै उत्पन्ना सा शुचिस्मिता
She, pure-smiling, was born from Lakṣmī, the wife of Dharma.
उत्तानपादो ऽजनयत्कन्ये द्वे च शुचिस्मिते
Uttānapāda begot two daughters, both pure-smiling.
ध्रुवो वर्षसहस्राणि दश दिव्यानि वीर्यवान्
Dhruva, powerful, spent ten thousand divine years.
त्रेतायुगे तु प्रथमे पौत्रः स्वायंभुवस्य तु
In the first Tretā Yuga, the grandson of Svāyambhu appeared.
तस्मै ब्रह्मा ददौ प्रीतो ज्योतिषां स्थानमुत्तमम्
To him, Brahmā, pleased, granted the highest place among the luminaries.
तस्यातिमात्रामृद्धिं च महिमानं निरीक्ष्य तु
Beholding his extraordinary prosperity and greatness,
अहो ऽस्य तपसो वीर्यमहो श्रुतमहो व्रतम्
Ah, the power of his austerity! Ah, his learning! Ah, his vow!
द्रुवे त्रिदिवमासक्तमीश्वरः स दिवस्पतिः
Dhruva, attached to the heavenly realm, became its lord, the master of heaven.
स्वां छायामाह वै सृष्टिर्भवनारीति तां प्रभुः
The lord declared that his own shadow would be the creation, called Bhavanāri.
दिव्यसंहनना छाया दिव्याभरणभूषिता
Chāyā, with a divine form, adorned with celestial ornaments.
