देवार्षी धर्मपुत्रौ तु नरनारायणवुभौ
The divine sages, the sons of Dharma, are both Nara and Narayana.
कुबेरश्चैव पौलस्त्यः प्रत्यूषस्य दलः सुत
Kubera and Paulastya, and the son of Pratyusha's branch.
ऋषन्ति वेदान्यस्मात्ते तस्माद्देवर्षयः स्मृताः
The Vedas arise from them; therefore, they are remembered as Devarshis.
ये च ऐक्ष्वाकनाभागा ज्ञेया राजर्षयस्तु ते
Those descended from Ikshvaku's lineage are to be known as Rajarshis.
ब्रह्मलोकप्रतिष्ठास्तु समृता ब्रह्मर्षयो ऽमलाः
Those established in Brahmaloka are remembered as pure Brahmarshis.
इन्द्रलोकप्रतिष्ठास्तु सर्वे राजर्षयो मताः
All those established in Indraloka are considered Rajarshis.
ये च ब्रह्मर्षयः प्रोक्ता दिव्या देवर्षयश्च ये
Those Brahmarshis mentioned, and those divine Devarshis as well.
भूतं भव्यं भवज्ज्ञानं सत्याभि व्यात्दृतं तथा
Knowledge of past, future, and present, established in truth and steadfastness.
तपसेह प्रसिद्धा ये गर्भे यैश्च प्रवेदितम्
Those who are renowned here for their austerity, and by whom knowledge was declared in the womb,
एते राजर्षयो युक्ता देवाद्विजनृपाश्च ये
These royal sages, endowed with virtue, and those who are divine and human kings,
सप्तैते सप्तभिश्चैव गुणैः सप्तर्षयः स्मृताः
These seven, together with seven qualities, are remembered as the seven sages.
बुद्धाः प्रत्यक्ष धर्माणो गोत्रप्रावर्त्तकाश्च ते
They are enlightened, directly perceiving dharma, and the originators of lineages.
तुल्यैर्व्यवहरन्ति स्म ह्यदुष्टैः कर्महेतुभिः
They acted with equal dealings, through blameless causes of action.
कुटुंबिनो बुद्धिमन्तो वनान्तरनिवासिनः
Householders, wise, dwelling in forest retreats,
वर्णाश्रमव्यवस्थानं क्रियते प्रथमं तु वै
The arrangement of classes and stages of life was indeed first established.
प्रवर्त्तयन्ति ये वर्णानाश्रमांश्चैव सर्वशः
They set in motion all the classes and stages of life entirely.
जायमाने पितापुत्रे पुत्रः पितरि चैव हि
When a father is born as a son, and a son likewise as a father,
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि प्रोक्तानि गृहमेधिनाम्
Eighty-eight thousand are said to be householders.
दाराग्निहोत्रिणस्ते वै यै प्रजाहेतवः स्मृताः
Those who have wives and perform fire-rituals are remembered as the causes of progeny.
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि निहिता उत्तरापथे
Eighty-eight thousand are established in the northern region.
मन्त्रब्राह्मणकर्त्तारो जायन्ते च युगक्षयात्
At the end of an age, creators of mantras and Brāhmaṇa texts are born.
कल्पानामार्षविद्यानां नानाशास्त्रकृतश्च ये
Those who composed the various scriptures of epochs and Vedic sciences,
वैवस्वते ऽन्तरे तस्मिन्द्वापरेषु पुनः पुनः
In the interval of Vaivasvata, in each Dvāpara age again and again,
सप्तमे द्वापरे व्यमताः स्वयं वेदाः स्वयंभुवा
In the seventh Dvāpara, the Vedas themselves were divided by Svayambhū.
तृतीये चोशना व्यासश्चतुर्थे च बृहस्पतिः
In the third, Uśanas was Vyāsa; in the fourth, Bṛhaspati.
सप्तमे च तथैवेन्द्रो वसिष्ठश्चाष्टमे स्मृतः
And in the seventh likewise Indra, and Vasiṣṭha is remembered in the eighth.
एकादशे तु त्रिवर्षा सनद्वाजस्ततः परम्
In the eleventh, for three years, Sanadvāja came thereafter.
त्रैय्यारुणिः पञ्चदशे षोडशे तु धनञ्जयः
In the fifteenth, Traiyyāruṇi; in the sixteenth, Dhanañjaya.
ऋजीषात्तु भरद्वाजो भरद्वाजात्तु गौतमः
From Ṛjīṣa came Bharadvāja, and from Bharadvāja, Gautama.
हर्यवनात्परो वेनः स्मृतो वाजश्रवास्ततः
From Haryavana, Vena is remembered; from him, Vājaśravā.
