आत्रेयः सुमतिर्धीमान्काश्यपो ह्यकृतव्रणः
Ātreya, the wise Sumati, Kāśyapa, and Akṛtavraṇa,
सावर्णिः सोमदत्तिश्च सुशर्मा शांशपायनः
Sāvarṇi, Somadatti, Suśarmā, and Śāṃśapāyana.
त्रिभिस्तत्र कृतास्तिस्रः संहिताः पुनरेव हि
There, three collections were made again by the three.
मामिका तु चतुर्थी स्याच्चतस्रो मूलसंहिताः
But mine is the fourth; thus, there are four primary collections.
पाठान्तरे वृथाभूता वेदशाखा यथा तथा
Other recensions became redundant, just as with the branches of the Veda.
लौमहर्षणिका मूला ततः काश्यपिका परा
The Laumaharṣaṇika is the first root, then the Kāśyapika is the next.
शांशपायनिका चान्या नोदनार्थविभूषिता
Another is the Śāṃśapāyanika, adorned with the meanings of the Noda and Artha.
एताः पञ्चदशान्याश्च दशान्या दशभिस्तथा
These are fifteen; there are also ten others, and likewise ten more.
अष्टौ सामसहस्राणि सामानि च चतुर्द्दश
There are eight thousand Sāman hymns, and fourteen Sāman songs.
द्वादशैव सहस्राणि च्छन्द आध्वर्यवं स्मृतम्
There are said to be twelve thousand Chandas in the Ādhvaryava tradition.
सग्राम्यारण्यकं तस्मात्समन्त्रकरणं तथा
From that, with the Grāmya and Āraṇyaka portions, also comes the composition of mantras.
ग्राम्यारण्यं समन्त्रं तदृग्ब्राह्मणयजुः स्मृतम्
The Grāmya and Āraṇyaka, together with mantras, are known as Ṛg, Brāhmaṇa, and Yajus.
तथैव तैत्तिरीयाणां परक्षुद्रा इति स्मृतम्
Likewise, the Taittirīyas are known as the Parakṣudra.
ऋग्गमः परिसंख्यातो ब्राह्मणं तु चतुर्गुणम्
The Ṛg collection is enumerated, and the Brāhmaṇa is said to be four times that.
एतत्प्रमाणं यजुषामृचां च सशुक्रियं सखिलं याज्ञवल्क्यम्
This is the measure of the Yajus and Ṛc verses, including the Śukriya, all according to Yājñavalkya.
षट्सहस्रमृचामुक्तमृचः षड्विंशतिं पुनः
It is said there are six thousand Ṛc verses, and again twenty-six more.
एकादशसहस्राणि ऋचश्चान्या दशोत्तराः
There are eleven thousand Ṛc verses, plus ten more.
सहस्रमेकं मन्त्राणामृचामुक्तं प्रमाणतः
One thousand mantras of Ṛc are declared as the measure.
ऋचामथर्वणां पञ्चसहस्राणीति निश्चयः
The Ṛc of the Atharvans are certainly five thousand.
एतदङ्गिरसां प्रोक्तं तेषामारण्यकं पुनः
This is what is spoken of the Āṅgirasas; their Āraṇyaka is again described.
कर्तारशचैव शाखानां भेदहेतूंस्तथैव च
The creators of the branches and the causes of their divisions as well.
प्राजापत्या श्रुतिर्नित्या तद्विकल्पास्त्विमे स्मृताः
The Vedic tradition of Prajapati is eternal; these alternatives are known as Smritis.
द्वापरेषु पुनर्भेदाः श्रुतीनां परिकीर्त्तिताः
In the Dvapara ages, further divisions of the Vedas are described.
शिष्चेब्यश्च प्रदत्त्वा तु तपस्तप्तु वन गतः
Having imparted them to their disciples, they undertook austerities and went to the forest.
अङ्गानि वेदाश्चत्वारो मीमांसा न्यायविस्तरः
The four Vedas, their limbs, Mimamsa, and the expanse of Nyaya.
आयुर्वेदो धनुर्वेदो गान्धर्वश्चेति ते त्रयः
Ayurveda, Dhanurveda, and Gandharva—these three as well.
ज्ञेया ब्रह्मर्षयः पूर्वं तेभ्यो देवर्षयः पुनः
Know that the Brahmarshis came first, and from them, the Devarshis followed.
काश्यपेषु वसिष्ठेषु तथा भृग्वङ्गिरो ऽत्रिषु
Among the Kashyapas, Vashishthas, as well as the Bhargavas, Angiras, and Atris.
यस्मादृषन्ति ब्रह्माणं ततो ब्रह्मर्षयः स्मृताः
Because they contemplate Brahman, they are remembered as Brahmarshis.
प्रत्यूषस्य च देवस्य कश्यपस्य तथा पुनः
Of Pratyusha the deity, and again of Kashyapa.
