शौरिषुः शृङ्गिपुत्रश्च द्वावेतौ तु चिरव्रतौ
Śauriṣu and Śṛṅgiputra—these two were steadfast in their vows.
प्रोवाच संहितास्ति स्रः शृङ्गिपुत्रौ महात्पाः
Śṛṅgiputra, the great soul, taught three Saṃhitās.
प्रोवाच संहिताः षट्तु पाराशर्यस्तु कौथुमः
Kauthuma, son of Parāśara, taught six Saṃhitās.
प्राचीनयोगपुत्रश्च बुद्धिमांश्च पतञ्जलिः
Prācīnayogaputra and the wise Patañjali as well.
लाङ्गलः शालिहोत्रश्च षडुवाचाथ संहिताः
Lāṅgala, Śālihotra, Ṣaḍuvāca, and the Saṃhitās—
कण्डुश्च कोहलश्चैव षडे ते लाङ्गलाः स्मृताः
Kaṇḍu and Kohala as well—these six are known as the Lāṅgalas.
एको हिरण्यनाभस्य कृतः शिष्यो नृपात्मजः
One was composed by Hiraṇyanābha, whose disciple was a prince.
प्रोवाच चैव शिष्येभ्यो येभ्यस्ताश्च निबोधत
And he indeed taught it to his disciples; listen to whom they were.
तलको माण्डुकश्चैव कालिको राजिकंस्तथा
Talaka, Māṇḍuka, Kālikā, and Rājika,
पुष्टिश्च परिकृष्टश्च उलूखलक एव च
Puṣṭi, Parikṛṣṭa, and also Ulūkhalaka,
शालिमञ्जरिपाकश्च शधीयः कानिनिश्च यः
Śālimañjaripāka, Śadhīya, and also Kāninī—
सामगानां तु सर्वेषां श्रेष्ठौ द्वौ परिकीर्त्तितौ
Of all the singers of Sāman, two are declared the foremost.
अथर्वाणं द्विधा कृत्वा सुमन्तुरददाद्द्विजाः
Sumantu divided the Atharva Veda into two and gave it to the twice-born.
कबन्धस्तु द्विधा कृत्वा पथ्यायैकं पुनर्ददौ
Kabandha, having divided it in two, gave one part again to Pathya.
मोदो ब्रह्मबलश्चैव पिप्पलादस्तथैव च
Modo, Brahmabala, and likewise Pippalāda—
देवदर्शस्य चत्वारः शिष्या ह्येते दृढव्रताः
These four steadfast disciples belonged to Devadarśa.
जाजलिः कुमुदादिश्च तृतीयः शौनकः स्मृतः
Jājali, Kumudādi, and the third is known as Śaunaka.
द्द्वितीयां संहितां धीमान्सैन्धवायनसंज्ञि ते
The wise one, called Saindhavāyana, [received] the second Saṃhitā.
नक्षत्रकल्पो वैतानस्तृतीयः संहिताविधिः
Nakṣatrakalpa, Vaitāna, and the third is Saṃhitāvidhi.
श्रेष्ठास्त्वथर्वणामेते संहितानां विकल्पकाः
These are the foremost among the Atharvans, arrangers of the Saṃhitās.
आत्रेयः सुमतिर्धीमान्काश्यपो ह्यकृतव्रणः
Ātreya, the wise Sumati, Kāśyapa, and Akṛtavraṇa,
सावर्णिः सोमदत्तिश्च सुशर्मा शांशपायनः
Sāvarṇi, Somadatti, Suśarmā, and Śāṃśapāyana.
त्रिभिस्तत्र कृतास्तिस्रः संहिताः पुनरेव हि
There, three collections were made again by the three.
मामिका तु चतुर्थी स्याच्चतस्रो मूलसंहिताः
But mine is the fourth; thus, there are four primary collections.
पाठान्तरे वृथाभूता वेदशाखा यथा तथा
Other recensions became redundant, just as with the branches of the Veda.
लौमहर्षणिका मूला ततः काश्यपिका परा
The Laumaharṣaṇika is the first root, then the Kāśyapika is the next.
शांशपायनिका चान्या नोदनार्थविभूषिता
Another is the Śāṃśapāyanika, adorned with the meanings of the Noda and Artha.
एताः पञ्चदशान्याश्च दशान्या दशभिस्तथा
These are fifteen; there are also ten others, and likewise ten more.
अष्टौ सामसहस्राणि सामानि च चतुर्द्दश
There are eight thousand Sāman hymns, and fourteen Sāman songs.
द्वादशैव सहस्राणि च्छन्द आध्वर्यवं स्मृतम्
There are said to be twelve thousand Chandas in the Ādhvaryava tradition.
