सूर्ये ब्रह्म यदुत्पन्नं तं गत्वा प्रतितिष्ठति
That which was produced as Brahman in the Sun, going there, abides.
तानि तस्मै ददौ तुष्टः सूर्यो वै ब्रह्मरातये
Satisfied, the Sun gave those things to Brahmarāta.
यजूंष्यधीयते तानि ब्राह्मणा येन केनचित्
The Brāhmaṇas recite those Yajus verses, each according to his own method.
ब्रह्महत्या तु यैश्चीर्णा चरणाच्चरकाः स्मृताः
Those by whom the killing of a Brahmin was performed are remembered as Carakas because of their conduct.
इत्येते चरकाः प्रोक्ता वाजिनस्तु निबोधत
Thus these Carakas are described; now listen about the Vājins.
मध्यन्दिनस्तु सापत्यो वैधेयश्चाद्धबौद्धकौ
The Madhyandina is the legitimate son, and the Vaidhya and the Adhabuddhaka.
आवटी च तथा पुण्ड्रो वैणोयः सपराशरः
Āvaṭī, Puṇḍra, Vaiṇoya, and Saparāśara as well.
शतमेकाधिकं ज्ञेयं यजुषां ये विकल्पकाः
It should be known that those who made variations of the Yajur Veda numbered one hundred and one.
सुमन्तुश्चापि सुत्वानं पुत्रमध्यापयत्पुनः
Sumantu also instructed his own son once again.
स सहस्रमधीत्याशु सुकर्माप्यथ संहिताः
He quickly mastered a thousand Saṃhitās and was skilled in good deeds.
अनध्यायेष्वधीयानांस्तञ्जघान शतक्रतुः
Śatakratu (Indra) struck down those who studied during forbidden periods.
क्रुद्धं दृष्ट्वा ततः शक्रोवरं सो ऽथ पुनर्ददौ
Then, seeing him enraged, Śakra granted him another boon.
अधीयातां महाप्राज्ञौ सहस्रं संहिता उभौ
Let both the highly wise ones study a thousand Saṃhitās.
इत्युक्त्वा वासवः श्रीमान्सुकर्माणं यशस्विनम्
Having spoken thus, the illustrious Vāsava addressed the renowned Sukarmā.
तस्य शिष्यो ऽभवद्धीमान् पौष्यञ्जिर्द्विजसत्तमाः
His intelligent disciple was Pauṣyañji, best among twice-born.
अध्यापयत पौष्याञ्जिः सहस्रार्द्धं तुसंहिताः
Pauṣyañji taught a thousand and a half Saṃhitās.
सत्त्वानि पञ्च कौशिल्यः संहिताना मधीतवान्
Kauśilya mastered five collections of Saṃhitās.
पौष्यञ्जि शिष्याश्चत्वारस्तेषां भेदान्निबोधत
Pauṣyañji had four disciples; listen to their divisions.
सकोतिपुत्रः सुसहाः सुनामा चैतान्भेदान्वित्तलौगाक्षिणस्तु
Sakotiputra, Susahā, Sunāma, and Vittalaugākṣiṇa—these are their branches.
त्रयस्तु कुशुमेः शिष्या औरसः स पराशरः
Three were disciples of Kuśuma, and Parāśara was his own son.
शौरिषुः शृङ्गिपुत्रश्च द्वावेतौ तु चिरव्रतौ
Śauriṣu and Śṛṅgiputra—these two were steadfast in their vows.
प्रोवाच संहितास्ति स्रः शृङ्गिपुत्रौ महात्पाः
Śṛṅgiputra, the great soul, taught three Saṃhitās.
प्रोवाच संहिताः षट्तु पाराशर्यस्तु कौथुमः
Kauthuma, son of Parāśara, taught six Saṃhitās.
प्राचीनयोगपुत्रश्च बुद्धिमांश्च पतञ्जलिः
Prācīnayogaputra and the wise Patañjali as well.
लाङ्गलः शालिहोत्रश्च षडुवाचाथ संहिताः
Lāṅgala, Śālihotra, Ṣaḍuvāca, and the Saṃhitās—
कण्डुश्च कोहलश्चैव षडे ते लाङ्गलाः स्मृताः
Kaṇḍu and Kohala as well—these six are known as the Lāṅgalas.
एको हिरण्यनाभस्य कृतः शिष्यो नृपात्मजः
One was composed by Hiraṇyanābha, whose disciple was a prince.
प्रोवाच चैव शिष्येभ्यो येभ्यस्ताश्च निबोधत
And he indeed taught it to his disciples; listen to whom they were.
तलको माण्डुकश्चैव कालिको राजिकंस्तथा
Talaka, Māṇḍuka, Kālikā, and Rājika,
पुष्टिश्च परिकृष्टश्च उलूखलक एव च
Puṣṭi, Parikṛṣṭa, and also Ulūkhalaka,
