ऋषिपुत्रा ऋषीकास्तु मैथुनाद्गर्भसंभवाः
The sons of the seers, called Ṛṣikas, are born from union and conception.
सप्तषर्यस्त तस्ते च परसत्यस्य दर्शनाः
Those seven seers, and their descendants, are seers of the supreme truth.
ऋषन्ति ते ऋतं यस्माद्विशेषांश्चैव तत्त्वतः
They are called seers because they perceive the cosmic order and its particular realities.
अव्यक्तात्मा महानात्माहङ्कारात्मा तथैव च
The unmanifest self, the Mahat self, and likewise the ego-self.
इत्येता ऋषिजातीस्ता नामभिः पञ्च वै शृणु
Hear now these five lineages of seers, named as such.
मनुर्दक्षो वसिष्टश्च पुलस्त्यश्चेति ते दश
Manu, Daksha, and Vasiṣṭha, and Pulastya—these are the ten.
परत्वेनर्षयो यस्मात्स्मृतास्तस्मान्महर्षयः
Because the sages are remembered as being supreme, they are called great sages.
काव्यो बृहस्पतिश्चैव कश्यपश्व्यवनस्तथा
Kāvya, Bṛhaspati, Kaśyapa, and Vyavana as well,
कर्दमो विश्रवाः शक्तिर्वालखिल्यास्तथार्वतः
Kardama, Viśravas, Śakti, and the Vālakhilyas likewise,
ऋषिपुत्रानृ षीकांस्तु गर्भोत्पन्नान्निबोधत
Now hear of the sons of the sages, those born from the womb.
ऋषिदीर्घतमाश्चैव बृहदुक्थः शरद्वतः
Ṛṣidīrghatamas, Bṛhaduktha, and Śaradvata,
दधीचः शंशपाश्चैव राजा वैश्रवणस्तथा
Dadhīca, Śaṃśapā, and King Vaiśravaṇa as well,
ईश्वरा ऋषयश्चैव ऋषिकाश्चैव ते स्मृताः
These are remembered as lords, sages, and also as ṛṣikās.
भृगुः काव्यः प्रचेताश्च ऋचीको ह्यात्मवानपि
Bhṛgu, Kāvya, Pracetas, and Ṛcīka, who is indeed self-possessed,
आर्ष्टिषेणो युधाजिच्च वीतहव्यसुवर्चसौ
Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, Yudhājit, Vītahavya, and Suvarcas,
एकोनविशतिर्ह्येतेभृगवो मन्त्रवादितः
These, numbering nineteen, are the Bhṛgus, known for their mantras.
ऋतवाकस्तथा गर्गः शिनिः संकृतिरेव च
Ṛtavāka, Garga, Śini, and Saṃkṛti as well,
युवनाश्वः पौरकुत्सस्त्रसद्दस्युश्च दस्युमान्
Yuvanāśva, Paurukutsa, Trasaddasyu, and Dasyumān,
वृषादर्भो विरूपाश्वः कण्वश्चैवाथ मुद्गलः
Vṛṣādarbha, Virūpāśva, Kaṇva, and Mudgala,
अयास्यश्चक्रवर्त्ती चवामदेवस्तथैव च
Ayāsya, Cakravartin, and Vāmadeva likewise,
कक्षीवांश्च त्रयस्त्रिंशत्स्मृता ह्याङ्गिरसा वराः
Kakṣīvān and thirty-three others are remembered as the eminent Āṅgirasas.
काश्यपश्चैव वत्सारो नैध्रुवो रैभ्य एव च
Kāśyapa, Vatsāra, Naidhruva, and Raibhya as well,
अत्रिरर्वसनश्चैव श्यावाश्वश्च गविष्ठिरः
Atri, Arvasana, Śyāvāśva, and Gaviṣṭhira,
इत्येते चा त्रयः प्रोक्ता मन्त्रकारा महर्षयः
Thus these three groups of great sages, makers of mantras, have been described.
चतुर्थ इन्द्रप्रमतिः पञ्चमश्च भरद्वसुः
The fourth is Indrapramati, and the fifth is Bharadvasu.
इति सप्त वशिष्ठाश्च विज्ञेया ब्रह्मवादिनः
Thus, know that these seven are the Vasiṣṭhas, speakers of Brahman.
तथा विद्वान्मधुच्छन्दा ऋषिश्चान्यो ऽघमर्षणः
Likewise, the learned Madhucchandā and another sage, Aghamarṣaṇa.
देवश्रवास्तथा रेणुः पूरणो ऽथ धनञ्जयः
Devaśravā, then Reṇu, Pūraṇa, and Dhanañjaya.
अगस्त्यो ऽयो दृढायुश्च विध्मवाहस्तथैव च
Agastya, Ayu, Dṛḍhāyu, and also Vidhmavāha.
मनुर्वैवस्वतश्चैव एलो राजा पुरूखाः
Manu, son of Vivasvat, as well as Ila, King Purūkhā.
