परस्परविभिन्नैस्तैदृष्टीनां विभ्रमेण च
Because of the mutual differences among those views and the confusion arising from them,
कारणानां च वैकल्प्यात्कार्याणां चाप्यनिश्चयात्
and due to the diversity of causes and the uncertainty of effects,
ततो दृष्टिविभन्नैस्तु कृतं शास्त्राकुलं त्विदम्
thus, by those with divided views, this multitude of scriptures has been produced.
संक्षयादायुपश्चैव व्यस्यते द्वापरेषु च
Through decline and loss of lifespan, it is scattered in the Dvapara ages.
मन्त्रब्राह्मणविन्यासैः स्वरवर्णविपर्ययैः
By the arrangements of mantras and Brāhmaṇas, and by the alteration of tones and syllables,
सामान्या वैकृताश्चैव दृष्टिभिन्ने क्वचित्क्वचित्
some are common, others are altered, wherever the views are divided.
अन्ये ऽपि प्रस्थितास्तान्वै केचित्तान्प्रत्यवस्थिताः
Others have set forth new paths, while some have opposed them.
एकमाध्वर्यवं त्वासीत्पुनर्द्वैधमजायत
The single Ādhvaryava tradition existed, but later it became twofold.
आध्वर्यवस्य प्रस्थानैर्बहुधा व्याकुलीकृतैः
By the various procedures of the Ādhvaryava, it became greatly confused.
व्याकुलेद्वापरे नित्यं क्रियते भिन्न दर्शनैः
In the Dvapara age, it is always performed in a state of confusion by those with differing views.
द्वापरे संप्रवर्त्तते विनश्यन्ति ततः कलौ
In the Dvapara age, it continues, but then perishes in the Kali age.
अवृष्टिर्मरणं चैव तथैव व्याध्युपद्रवाः
There is drought, death, and likewise the afflictions of disease.
निर्वेदाज्जायते तेषां दुःखमोक्षविचारणा
From disillusionment among them arises inquiry into liberation from suffering.
दोषदर्शनतस्चैव द्वापरे ऽज्ञानसंभवः
And from seeing faults, in the Dvapara age, ignorance arises.
उत्पद्यन्ते हि शास्त्राणां द्वापरे परिपन्थिनः
Indeed, in the Dvapara age, obstacles to the scriptures arise.
अर्थशास्त्रविकल्पाश्च हेतुशास्त्रविकल्पनम्
There are divergent views on the science of wealth and on the science of reasoning.
स्मृतिशास्त्रप्रभेदश्च प्रस्थानानि पृथक्पृथक्
There are also divisions of the Smṛti scriptures and separate traditions.
मनसा कर्मणा वाचा कृच्छ्राद्वार्ता प्रसिद्ध्यति
Through mind, action, and speech, and with difficulty, livelihood is established.
लोभो वृत्तिर्वणिक्पूर्वा तत्त्वानामविनिश्चयः
Greed becomes the norm, trade is the primary occupation, and there is no certainty regarding the true nature of things.
वर्णाश्रमपरिध्वंसः कामक्रोधौ तथैव च
The destruction of the classes and stages of life occurs, as do desire and anger.
वेदं व्यासश्चतुर्द्धा तु व्यस्यते द्वापरादिषु
Vyasa divides the Veda into four parts in the Dvapara and later ages.
प्रतिष्ठते गुणैर्हीनो धर्मो ऽसौ द्वापरस्य तु
In Dvapara, righteousness exists, but it is deprived of its qualities.
द्वापरस्यावशेषेण तिष्यस्य तु निबोधत
Now hear about what remains at the end of Dvapara, in the age of Tishya.
हिंसासूयानृतं माया वधश्चैव तपस्विनाम्
Violence, envy, falsehood, deceit, and the killing of ascetics prevail.
एष धर्मः कृतः कृत्स्नो धर्मश्च परिहीयते
This is the complete decline of righteousness, and dharma is diminished.
कलौ प्रमारकी रोगः सततं क्षुद्भयानि च
In Kali, there is constant deadly disease and perpetual hunger and fear.
न प्रमाणं स्मृतेरस्ति तिष्ये लोकेषु वै युगे
In the age of Tishya, there is no authority for memory in the worlds.
स्थविराः के ऽपि कौमारे म्रियन्ते वै कलौ प्रजाः
In Kali, some elders die even in childhood.
विप्राणां कर्मदोषैस्तैः प्रजानां जायते भयम्
Because of the faults in the actions of the Brahmins, fear arises among the people.
तिष्ये भवन्ति जन्तूनां रागो लोभश्च सर्वशः
In Tishya, attachment and greed arise in all beings.
