क्षणं वियोगो न ह्येषां न त्यजन्ति परस्परम्
There is not even a moment of separation between them; they never abandon one another.
अदृष्टाधिष्ठितात्पूर्वे तस्मात्सदसदात्मकात्
From that which is established by the unseen, from that which is of the nature of both being and non-being—
तस्मात्तमोव्यक्तमयं क्षेत्रज्ञो ब्रह्मसंज्ञकः
From that arises the one composed of darkness and the unmanifest, the knower of the field, known as Brahman.
तेजसाप्रतिमो धीमानव्यक्तः संप्रकाशकः
Unmatched in brilliance, wise, unmanifest, and illuminating—
ज्ञानेनाप्रतिमेनेह वैराग्येण च सप्ततिः
Here, knowledge is unsurpassed, and so too is detachment, numbering seventy.
वशीकृतत्वात्त्रैगुण्यात्सापेक्षत्वाच्च भावतः
Because of mastery over the three qualities, and due to its essential dependence—
सहस्रमूर्धा पुरुषस्तिस्रो ऽवस्थाःस्वयंभुवः
The Purusha with a thousand heads, the Self-born, exists in three states.
सात्त्विकः पुरुषत्वे च गुणवृतं स्वयंभुवः
In the state of Purusha, the Self-born is endowed with qualities and is sattvic.
पुरुषत्वे उदासीनस्तिस्रो ऽवस्थाः स्वयंभुवः
In the state of Purusha, he is indifferent; the Self-born exists in three states.
पुरुषः पुण्डरीकाक्षो रूपेण परमात्मनः
The Purusha, lotus-eyed, is the form of the Supreme Self.
योगीश्वरः शरीराणि करोति विकरोतिच
The lord of yogis creates and transforms bodies.
त्रिधा यद्वर्तते लोके तस्मात्र्रिगुण उच्यते
Because it operates in the world in three ways, it is called threefold in qualities.
यदा शेते तदार्धाते यद्भुङ्क्ते विषयान्प्रभुः
When he sleeps, he is in half; when he enjoys the objects, the lord—
ऋषिः सर्वगतश्चात्र शरीरे सो ऽभ्ययात्प्रभुः
Here, the sage, all-pervading, entered the body, the lord.
भगवानग्रसद्भावान्नागो नागस्वसंश्रयात्
Because of the supreme state of the Blessed Lord, he is called Nāga; and because he takes refuge in Nāga.
सर्वज्ञः सर्वविज्ञानात्सर्वःसर्वंयतस्ततः
He is all-knowing because of all knowledge; he is all, from whom everything arises.
त्रिधा विभज्य चात्मानं सकलः संप्रवर्त्तते
Dividing himself threefold, the all-complete one proceeds forth.
सो ऽग्रे हिरण्यगर्भः सन् प्रादुर्भूतः स्वयं प्रभुः
He, at the beginning, being Hiraṇyagarbha, manifested himself, the Lord.
तस्माद्धिरण्यगर्भश्च पुराणेषु निरुच्यते
Therefore, in the Purāṇas, Hiraṇyagarbha is described as such.
न शक्यः परिसंख्यातुं मनुवर्षशतैरपि
He cannot be measured, not even in hundreds of Manu's years.
तावत्त्वे सो ऽस्य कालो ऽन्यस्तस्यान्ते प्रतिबुद्ध्यते
Only when that time ends does another period awaken for him.
समतीतानि कल्पानां तावच्छेषात्परेतु ये
Of the kalpas that have passed, only those that remain are beyond.
प्रथमं सांप्रतस्तेषां कल्पो वै वर्त्तते च यः
Of these, the present kalpa is the first and currently ongoing.
पूर्णे युगसहस्रे तु परिपाल्यं नरेश्वरैः
When a thousand yugas are complete, it is to be protected by the lords of men.
शान्तवातैः प्रलीने ऽस्मिन्न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन
When all was dissolved by gentle winds, nothing at all was perceived.
विभुर्भवति स ब्रह्मा सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्
Then, the all-pervading Brahmā, with a thousand eyes and a thousand feet, came into being.
ब्रह्म नारायणाख्यस्तु सुष्वाप सलिले तदा
That Brahmā, called Nārāyaṇa, then slept upon the waters.
इमं चोदाहरन्त्यत्रर् श्लोकं नारायणं प्रति
Here, they recite this verse concerning Nārāyaṇa.
अयन तस्य ताःप्रोक्तास्तेन नारायणः स्मृतः
Because those paths are said to be his, he is remembered as Nārāyaṇa.
स्वर्णपत्रेप्रकुरुते ब्रह्मत्वादर्शकारणात्
He creates from a golden vessel, as a sign of his attainment of Brahmanhood.
