Then, the Pradhāna and the Puruṣa remain together, sharing the same nature.
They are called mutual followers, neither exceeding nor lagging behind the other.
When sattva increases, there is stability, fixed like the tip of a lotus.
Rajas is the principle of activity, just as water is for seeds.
When the qualities are agitated, three should be understood with care.
Sattva is Viṣṇu, rajas is Brahmā, tamas is Rudra, the lord of creatures.
And from these arises the creation of the worlds, endowed with great energy.
Viṣṇu, manifesting sattva, is established as the principle of preservation.
These very three are the Vedas; these very three are the sacred fires.
They interact with each other, impelling one another.
There is not even a moment of separation between them; they never abandon one another.
From that which is established by the unseen, from that which is of the nature of both being and non-being—
From that arises the one composed of darkness and the unmanifest, the knower of the field, known as Brahman.
Unmatched in brilliance, wise, unmanifest, and illuminating—
Here, knowledge is unsurpassed, and so too is detachment, numbering seventy.
Because of mastery over the three qualities, and due to its essential dependence—
The Purusha with a thousand heads, the Self-born, exists in three states.
In the state of Purusha, the Self-born is endowed with qualities and is sattvic.
In the state of Purusha, he is indifferent; the Self-born exists in three states.
The Purusha, lotus-eyed, is the form of the Supreme Self.
The lord of yogis creates and transforms bodies.
Because it operates in the world in three ways, it is called threefold in qualities.
When he sleeps, he is in half; when he enjoys the objects, the lord—
Here, the sage, all-pervading, entered the body, the lord.
Because of the supreme state of the Blessed Lord, he is called Nāga; and because he takes refuge in Nāga.
He is all-knowing because of all knowledge; he is all, from whom everything arises.
Dividing himself threefold, the all-complete one proceeds forth.
He, at the beginning, being Hiraṇyagarbha, manifested himself, the Lord.
Therefore, in the Purāṇas, Hiraṇyagarbha is described as such.
He cannot be measured, not even in hundreds of Manu's years.
