यानि चान्यानिभूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च
And whatever other beings exist, stationary or moving—
अस्माकं दह्यमानानां त्राता भव सुरेश्वर
O Lord of the gods, be our protector as we are being consumed.
महेश्वर महाभाग प्रभो शुभनिरीक्षक
O great Lord Maheśvara, master of auspicious vision.
रूपकोटिसहस्रेषु रूपकोटिशतेषु च
Among thousands of millions of forms, and among hundreds of millions of forms.
ततस्तु भगवानीश इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Then the blessed Lord spoke these words.
यथोक्तकारिणो दान्ता विप्रा ध्यानपरायणाः
Those who act as instructed, who are restrained, and who are devoted to meditation, O Brāhmans.
न चेमानप्रियं ब्रूयादमुत्रेह हितार्थवान्
Let them not speak what is displeasing here or elsewhere, but always speak for the welfare of others.
एवं चरथ भद्रं वो मत्तः सिद्धिमवाप्स्यथ
Act in this way; may good fortune be yours. From me, you will attain perfection.
अपगतभयलोभमोहचिन्ताः सह पतिताः महसा शिरोभिरूहुः
Freed from fear, greed, delusion, and anxiety, they bowed together with their heads in radiance.
गन्धोदकैः सुशुद्धैश्च कुशपुष्पविमिश्रितैः
With pure scented water, mixed with sacred grass and flowers.
गायन्ति विविधैर्गुह्यैर् हुंकारैश्चापि सुस्वरैः
They sang with various secret chants and with melodious hums.
अर्द्ध नारीशरीराय सांख्ययोगप्रवर्त्तिने
To the one whose body is half female, who initiates the practice of Sāṃkhya and Yoga.
कृष्णाजिनोत्तरीयाय व्यालयज्ञोपवीतिने
To the one clad in a black antelope skin, wearing a serpent as sacred thread.
मृगपतिवरचर्मवाससे ते पृथुपरशो च नमोस्तु शङ्कराय
To the one dressed in the skin of the lord of beasts, with a broad axe, salutations to Śaṅkara.
वर्णधर्मपराश्चैव चेरुस्ते मुनिसत्तमाः
The foremost sages devoted themselves to the duties of their castes and disciplines.
प्रीतोस्मि युष्मत्तपसा वरं वृणुत मुव्रताः
I am pleased by your austerity; O vow-holders, choose a boon.
भृग्वङ्गिरा वसिष्ठश्च विश्वामित्रस्तथैव च
Bhṛgu, Aṅgirā, Vasiṣṭha, and likewise Viśvāmitra.
मरीचिः कश्यपश्चापि संवर्तश्च महातपाः
Marīci, Kaśyapa, and also Saṃvarta, the great ascetic.
सेव्यासेव्यत्वं तु विभो एतदिच्छाम वेदितुम्
O Lord, we wish to know the distinction between what is to be served and what is not to be served.
अग्निर्ह्यहं सोमयुतः सोमश्चाग्निमुपश्रितः
I am Agni united with Soma, and Soma is established in Agni.
असकृच्चाग्निना दग्धं जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम्
The entire world, both immobile and mobile, has been burned repeatedly by fire.
भस्मना वीर्यमास्थाय भूतानि परिषिञ्चति
Having assumed potency through ashes, it sprinkles the beings.
भस्मना मम वीर्येण मुच्यते सर्वकिल्बिषैः
By the power of my ashes, one is freed from all sins.
तत्क्षणात्सर्वपापानां भस्मेति परिकीर्त्यते
Therefore, at that very moment, all sins are said to become ashes.
अग्नीषोमात्मकं सर्वं जगत्स्थावरजं गमम्
All the world, both immobile and mobile, is composed of the essence of Agni and Soma.
अहमग्निश्च सोमश्च प्रकृत्या पुरुषः स्वयम्
I am Agni and Soma by nature, and I am the Purusha myself.
स्ववीर्यं वपुषा चैव धारयामीति वै स्थितिः
I sustain my own power and form, and thus maintain existence.
भस्मना क्रियते रक्षा सूतिकानां गृहेषु च
Protection is performed with ashes in the homes of women in childbirth.
मत्समीपसुपागम्य न भूयो विनिवर्तते
Having approached near me, one does not return again.
पूर्वं पाशुपतं ह्येतन्निर्मितं तदनुत्तमम्
This excellent Pāśupata rite was formerly established.
