सोमर्क्षग्रहसूर्येषु कीर्त्तिता ह्यभिमानिनः
The proud ones are mentioned among the Moon, star, planet, and Sun.
शुक्लमग्निमयं स्थानं सहस्रांशोर्विवस्वतः
The abode of Vivasvat, the thousand-rayed one, is white and made of fire.
आप्यं श्यामं मनोज्ञस्य पञ्चरश्मेर्गृहं स्मृतम्
The house of the charming five-rayed one is watery and dark.
नवरश्मेस्तु भौमस्य लौहितं स्थानमम्मयम्
The abode of Bhauma, with nine rays, is iron and red.
अषृ रश्मिगृहं प्रोक्तं कृष्णं मन्दस्य चाम्मयम्
The house of Mandā, with eight rays, is said to be black and iron.
विज्ञेयास्तारकाः सर्वा अम्मयास्त्त्वे करश्मयः
All the stars should be understood as iron, and their rays are made of hands.
घनतोयात्मिका ज्ञेयाः कल्पादावेव निर्मिताः
They should be known as dense and watery in nature, created at the beginning of the kalpa.
नवयोजनसाहस्रो विष्कंभः सवितुः स्मृतः
The axis of Savitṛ is said to be nine thousand yojanas.
द्विगुणः सूर्यविस्ताराद्विस्तारः शशिनः स्मृतः
The extent of the moon is said to be twice that of the sun.
उद्धृत्य पृथिवीछायां निर्मितो मण्डलाकृतिः
Having taken the shadow of the earth, a circular form is fashioned.
आदित्यात्तच्च निष्क्रम्य सोमं गच्छति पर्वसु
Emerging from the sun, it reaches the moon during the phases.
स्वर्भासा नुदते यस्मात्तस्मात्स्वर्भानुरुच्यते
Because it drives away the radiance of the heavens, it is called Svarbhanu.
विष्कंभान्मण्डलाच्चैव योजनाग्रात्प्रमाणतः

बृहस्पतेः पाद हीनौ भौमसौरावुभौ स्मृतौ

सूर्यसोमौ बुधश्चैव भार्गवश्चैव शीघ्रगाः
The sun, moon, Mercury, and Venus are swift-moving.
विधिना नियमाच्चैषामृक्षचर्या व्यवस्थिता
By rule and regulation, their movement among the constellations is established.
उत्तरायणमार्गस्थो यदा पर्वसु चन्द्रमाः
When the moon is in the path of the northern solstice during the phases,
तदा दक्षिणमार्गस्यो नीयां विथीमुपाश्रितः
Then, being in the path of the southern solstice, it follows the prescribed route.
न दृश्यते यथाकालं शीघ्रमस्तमुपैति च
It is not seen at the proper time and quickly sets.
दृश्यते दक्षिणे मार्गे नियमाद्दृश्यते न च
It is seen in the southern path by rule, and sometimes it is not seen.
समानकालास्तमयौ विषुवत्सु समोदयौ
At the equinoxes, the setting and rising occur at the same time.
पूर्णामवास्ययोर्ज्ञोयौ ज्योतिश्चक्रानुवर्तिनौ
The full moon and new moon are to be understood as following the circuit of the luminaries.
तदा सर्वग्रहाणां च सूर्यो ऽधस्तात्प्रसर्पति
At that time, the Sun moves below all the planets.
नक्षत्रमण्डलं कृत्स्नं सोमादूर्द्ध्व प्रसर्पति
The entire circle of stars moves above the Moon.
वक्रस्तु भार्गवादूर्द्ध्व वक्रादूर्द्ध्वं बृहस्पतिः
Retrograde motion begins above Venus; above retrograde is Jupiter.
