दक्षिणं राजतं चैव शृङ्गं तु स्फटिकप्रभम्
The southern and the silver peak, and the one shining like crystal.
एवं कूटैस्त्रिभिः शैलः शृङ्गवानिति विश्रुतः
Thus, with three summits, the mountain is renowned as Śṛṅgavān.
शरद्वसंतयोर्मध्ये मध्यमां गतिमास्थितः
Between autumn and spring, it maintains a middle course.
अनुलिप्ता इवाभान्ति पद्मरक्तैर्गभस्तिभिः
They shine as if anointed with rays as red as lotuses.
मुहूर्त्ता दश पञ्चैव अहो रात्रिश्च तावती
Ten and five muhūrtas make up a day and night of that measure.
विशाखानां तदा ज्ञेयश्चतुर्थांश निशाकरः
At that time, the moon should be understood as being in the fourth part of Viśākhā.
तदा चन्द्रं विजानीयात्कृत्तिकाशिरसि स्थितम्
Then, know that the moon is positioned at the head of Kṛttikā.
विषुवं तं विजानीयादेवमाहुर्महर्षयः
That is to be known as the equinox, as declared by the great sages.
समा रात्रिरहश्चैव यदा तद्विषुवं भवेत्
When day and night are equal, that is called the equinox.
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो विशेषेण मुखमेतत्तु दैवतम्
This, in particular, is the divine mouth among the Brāhmaṇas.
सिनीवाली कुहूश्चैव राका चानुमतिस्तथा
Sinīvālī, Kuhū, Rākā, and Anumati as well—
नभोनभस्याविषऊर्जसंज्ञौ सहःसहस्याविति दक्षिणं स्यात्
Nabho and Nabhasya, Aviṣa and Ūrja, Saha and Sahasya—these are the southern ones.
आर्तवाश्च ततो ज्ञेया पञ्चाब्दा ब्रह्मणाः सुताः
Next are to be known the Ārtavas, five years, the sons of Brahmā.
तस्मादृतुमुखी ज्ञेया अमावास्यास्य पर्वणः
Therefore, the new moon is to be known as the gateway to the seasons for this rite.
पर्व ज्ञात्वा न मुह्येत पित्र्ये दैवे च मानवः
Knowing the proper time, a person does not become confused in ancestral or divine rites.
आलोकात्तु स्मृतो लोको लोकालोकः स उच्यते
From the light, the world is remembered; it is called Lokāloka.
चत्वारस्ते महात्मानस्तिष्टन्त्याभूतसंप्लवात्
There stand four great beings, from the flood of non-being.
हिरण्यरोमा पर्जन्यः केतुमान्राजसश्च यः
They are Hiraṇyaromā, Parjanya, Ketumān, and Rājasa.
लोकपालाः स्थिता ह्येते लोकालोके चतुर्दिशम्
These are the guardians of the worlds, stationed in the four directions at Lokāloka.
पितृयानः स वै पन्था वैश्वानरपथाद्वहिः
The path of the ancestors is indeed outside the Vaiśvānara path.
लोकस्य संतानकराः पितृयानपथे स्थिताः
Those who cause the continuation of the world are established on the path of the ancestors.
प्रारभन्ते लोककामास्तेषां पन्थाः स दक्षिणाः
Desiring worlds, they set forth; their path is the southern one.
संतप्तास्तपसा चैव मर्यादाभिः श्रुतेन च
They are purified by austerity, by observance of boundaries, and by learning.
पश्चिमाश्चैव पूर्वेषां जायन्ते निधनेष्वपि
The later ones are born from the earlier ones, even at the time of their demise.
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि ऋषीमाङ्गृहमेधिनाम्
There are eighty-eight thousand sages who are householders.
क्रियावतां प्रसंख्यैषा ये श्मशानानि भेजिरे
This enumeration is of those who, possessing ritual action, entered the cremation grounds.
इच्छाद्वेषप्रवृत्त्या च मैथुनोपगमेन वै
Through inclination, aversion, activity, and indeed through sexual union,
एतैस्तैः कारणैः सिद्धा ये श्मशानानि भेजिरे
By these various causes, those who attained perfection entered the cremation grounds.
नागवीथ्युत्तरो यश्च सप्तर्षिगणदक्षिणः
One is north of the Nāga street, and another is south of the group of Seven Sages.
यत्र ते वासिनः सिद्धा विमला ब्रह्मचारिणः
There reside perfected beings, pure and devoted to celibacy.
