अभिमानिनोव्यतीता ये तुल्यास्ते सांप्रतैस्त्विह
Those who were proud and have passed away are equal to those who are present now.
तस्मात्तु सांप्रतैर्देवैर्वक्ष्यामि वसुधातलम्
Therefore, I shall describe the surface of the Earth as it is among the present gods.
शतार्द्धकोटिविस्तारा पृथिवी कृत्स्नशः स्मृता
The entire Earth is remembered as having a breadth of one and a half hundred crore yojanas.
पृथिव्या ह्यर्द्धविस्तारो योजनाग्रात्प्रकीर्त्तितः
Half the breadth of the Earth is stated from the tip of the yojana.
तथा शातसहस्राणामेकोन नवतिः पुनः
Likewise, there are ninety-nine thousand yojanas less than a hundred thousand.
गणितं योजनाग्रात्तु कोट्यस्त्वेकादश स्मृताः
From the tip of the yojana, eleven crore yojanas are reckoned.
इत्येतदिह संश्यातं पृथिव्यन्तस्य मण्डलम्
Thus, the circumference of the Earth's interior has been described here.
पर्याससन्निवेशश्च भूमेर्यावत्तु मण्डलम्
The arrangement and distribution of the Earth extend as far as its orbit.
सप्तानामपि द्वीपानामेत त्स्थानं प्रकीर्तितम्
The location of the seven continents has been described here.
उपर्युपरि लोकानां छत्रवत्परिमण्डलम्
Above each, the worlds are arranged in a circular form like an umbrella.
एतदण्डकपालस्य प्रमाणं परिकीर्त्तितम्
This is the measure of the shell of the cosmic egg as has been explained.
भूर्लोकश्च भुवर्ल्लोकस्तृतीयस्सृरिति स्स्वतः
The Bhūrloka and Bhuvarloka, and the third, Svarga, are established by themselves.
एते सप्त कृता लोकाश्छत्राकारा व्यवस्थिताः
These seven worlds are arranged in the shape of an umbrella.
दशभागाधिकाभिश्च ताभिः प्रकृतिभिर्बहिः
Surrounding them externally are elements exceeding by one-tenth in proportion.
अस्याण्डस्य समन्ताच्च सन्निविष्टो घनोदधिः
All around this cosmic egg is situated the dense ocean.
घनोदधिः परेणाथ धार्य्यते घनतेजसा
Beyond the dense ocean, it is upheld by concentrated radiance.
संमताद्धनवातेन धार्यमाणं प्रतिष्ठितम्
It is firmly established, supported by the esteemed wind of wealth.
भूतादिना वृतं सर्वं भूतादिर्महता वृतः
Everything is enveloped by the primordial elements, and the primordial is enveloped by the great.
पुराणि लोकपालानां प्रवक्ष्यामि यथाक्रमम्
I will now declare, in order, the ancient guardians of the worlds.
मेरोः प्राच्यां दिशि तथा मानसस्यैव मूर्द्धनि
On the eastern side of Meru, likewise on the summit of Manasa,
दक्षिणेन पुनर्मेरोर्मानसस्यैव मूर्द्धनि
Again, on the southern side of Meru, on the summit of Manasa,
प्रतीच्यां तु पुनर्मेरोर्मानसस्यैव मूर्द्धनि
And again, on the western side of Meru, on the summit of Manasa,
वरुणो यादसां नाथस्सुखाख्ये वसते पुरे
Varuna, lord of the aquatic beings, dwells in the city called Sukha.
तुल्या महेन्द्रपुर्य्यास्तु सोमस्यापि विभावरी
It is equal to Mahendra's city; for Soma too, there is the city called Vibhāvarī.
स्थिता धर्मव्यवस्थार्थ लोकमंरक्षणाय च
They are established for the purpose of maintaining righteousness and protecting the worlds.
काष्ठागतस्य सूर्यस्य गतिया तां निबोधत
Now listen to the movement of the sun as it passes through the divisions.
ज्योतिषां चक्रमादाय सततं परिगच्छति
Taking the wheel of the luminaries, it continually revolves.
वैवस्वते संयमते उदयस्तत्र दृश्यते
In the realm of Vaivasvata, restraint is observed; there, the sunrise is seen.
सुखायामथ वारुण्यामुत्तिष्ठन्स तु दृश्यते
For pleasure, or in the region of Varuna, rising is observed.
यदा दक्षिणपुर्वेषामपराह्णो विधीयते
When afternoon is established in the southeastern regions,
