पञ्चमे ऽस्मिंस्तले ज्ञेयं शर्करानिचये सदा
On this fifth level, always known as the heap of gravel.
सुपर्वणः पुलोम्नश्च नगरं महिषस्य च
The city of Suparvan, of Puloman, and of Mahiṣa.
तत्रास्ते सुरमापुत्रः शतशीर्षो मुदा युतः
There dwells the son of Suramā, Śataśīrṣa, filled with joy.
एवं पुरसहस्राणि नागदानवरक्षसाम्
In this way, there are thousands of cities of nāgas, dānavas, and rākṣasas.
सप्तमे तु तले ज्ञेयं पाताले सर्वपश्चिमे
But in the seventh region, known as Pātāla, at the farthest west,
असुराशीविषैः पूर्णं सुखितैर्देवशत्रुभिः
It is filled with asuras and venomous serpents, contented enemies of the gods.
अनेकैर्दितिपुत्राणां समुदीर्णैर्महापुरैः
With many great cities teeming with the sons of Diti,
दैत्यानां दानवानां च समुदीर्णैर्महापुरैः
And with great cities crowded with daityas and dānavas.
पातालान्ते च विप्रेन्द्रा विस्तीण बहुयोजने
At the end of Pātāla, O best of brāhmaṇas, stretched across many yojanas,
धौतशङ्खोदरवपुर्नील वासा महाबलः
Is one whose body is like a washed conch, clothed in blue, of great strength.
रुक्मशृङ्गावदातेन दीप्तास्येन विराजता
With golden horns, pure, with a shining face, he is resplendent.
स जिह्वामालया दीप्तो लोलज्ज्वालानलार्चिषा
He is blazing with a garland of tongues, with flickering flames of fire.
स तु नेत्रसहस्रेण द्विगुणेन विराजता
He shines with a thousand eyes, and twice as many more.
तस्य कुन्देन्दुवर्णस्य नेत्रमाला विराजते
A garland of eyes, bright as jasmine and the moon, adorns him.
विकरालोच्छ्रिततनुर्लक्ष्यते शयनासने
With a body raised and vast, he is seen reclining and seated.
महानागैर्महाभोगैर्महाविज्ञैर्महात्मभिः
With great serpents, mighty coils, great wisdom, and great souls.
स राजा सर्वनागानां शेषो ऽनन्तो महाद्युतिः
He is the king of all nāgas, Śeṣa, Ananta, of great splendor.
सप्तैवमेते कथिता व्यवहार्या रसातलाः
Thus, these seven lower regions called Rasātala have been described.
अतः परमनालोकमगम्यं सिद्धसाधुभिः
Beyond this is a realm unseen, inaccessible even to perfected sages.
पृथ्व्यंबुव ङ्निवायूनां नभसश्च द्विजोत्तमाः
Of earth, water, fire, wind, and ether, O best of twice-born.
अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्गतिम्
Now I shall explain the course of the Sun and the Moon.
प्रकाशैस्तु प्रभाभिस्तौ मण्डलाभ्यां समुच्छ्रितौ
By their radiance and light, those two are elevated along with their orbits.
विस्तरार्द्धे पृथिव्यास्तु भवेदन्यत्र बाह्यतः
Half the expanse of the Earth is considered, elsewhere, as external.
पर्यास्तात्पारिमाण्येन भूमेस्तुल्यं दिवं स्मृतम्
The heavens are regarded as equal in extent to the circumference of the Earth.
अविधातुः प्रकाशाख्यो ह्यवनात्स रविः स्मृतः
The Sun is known as the source of light and is remembered as rising from the Earth.
महित्तत्त्वान्महीशब्दो ऽह्यस्मिन्वर्षे निपाद्यते
The term 'Mahī' is applied in this region to denote the principle of the Earth.
मण्डलं भास्करस्याथ योजनानि निबोधत
Now, learn the number of yojanas in the orbit of the Sun.
विस्तारात्र्रिगुणश्चास्य परिणाहस्तु मण्डले
Its diameter is three times its breadth, and the circumference of the orbit is measured accordingly.
अथ पृथिव्या वक्ष्यामि प्रमाणं योजनैः सह
Next, I shall state the measurement of the Earth along with its yojanas.
इत्येतदिह संख्यातं पुराणे परिमाणतः
Thus, the extent has been enumerated here in the Purāṇa.
