भूर्लोको ऽथ भुवर्ल्लोकः स्वर्लोको ऽथ महस्तथा
Then come the Bhūrloka, Bhuvarloka, Svarloka, and likewise Maharloka.
एतावानेव विज्ञेयो लोकान्तश्चैव यः परः
This alone should be understood as the extent, and that which is the further boundary of the worlds.
आदितः शुक्लपक्षस्य वपुश्चाण्डस्य तद्विधम्
From the beginning of the bright fortnight, the form of the cosmic egg is thus.
तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधो वापि कारणस्याव्ययात्मनः
Whether across, above, or below, it is of the imperishable essence of the cause.
दशाधिक्येन चान्योन्यं धारयन्ति परस्परम्
Each one supports the other, exceeding by ten in succession.
अण्डस्यास्य समन्तात्तु सन्निविष्टो घनोदधिः
All around this cosmic egg is situated the dense ocean.
बाह्यतो घनतो यस्य तिर्यगूर्द्ध्वं तु मण्डलम्
Outside, in its density, its sphere extends across and above.
अयोगुडनिभो वाह्नः समन्ता न्मण्डलाकृतिः
The region of fire, round in shape, is like a mass of iron all around.
घनवातं तथाकाशो दधानः खलु तिष्ठति
Indeed, supporting dense wind and space, it stands firmly.
महाश्च सो ऽप्यनन्तेन ह्यव्यक्तेन तु धार्यते
That great one, too, is upheld by the infinite and unmanifest.
अनन्तम कृतात्मानमनादिनिधनं च यत्
He is infinite, self-constituted, without beginning or end.
नैकयोजनसाहस्रं विप्रकृष्टमनावृतम्
It is separated by thousands of yojanas, vast and unbounded.
देवानामप्यविदितं व्यवहारविवर्जितम्
Even the gods do not know it; it is beyond all dealings.
मर्यादायामनन्तस्य देवस्यायतनं महत्
This is the great abode, the boundary of the infinite God.
महतो देवदेवस्य मर्यादा या व्यवस्थिताः
The boundaries established for the great God of gods—
ते लोका इत्यभिहिता जगतस्च न संशयः
These are called the worlds of the universe, without doubt.
सप्तस्कन्धस्तथा वायोः सब्रह्मसदना द्विजाः
There are seven layers, O twice-born, and the abodes of Brahma as well.
प्रमाणमेतज्जगत एष संसारसागरः
This is the measure of the universe, this is the ocean of transmigration.
विचित्रा जगतः सा वै प्रकृतिर्ब्रह्मणः स्थिता
This wondrous nature of the universe is established as the nature of Brahman.
अतीन्द्रियेर्महाभागैः सिद्धैरपि न लक्षितः
Even by the most blessed perfected beings, it is not perceived by the senses.
मानसस्य तु देहस्य अनन्तस्य द्विजोत्तमाः
O best of twice-born, this is the mental body of the infinite one.
अनन्त एष सर्वत्र एवं ज्ञानेषु पठ्यते
This infinite is spoken of everywhere in the teachings.
यः पद्मनाभनाम्ना तु तत्कार्त्स्न्येन च कीर्त्तितः
He who is called by the name Padmanabha is thus described in his entirety.
भूमौ रसातले चैव आकाशे पवने ऽनले
On earth, in the netherworld, in the sky, in the wind, in fire—
तथा तमसि विज्ञेय एष एव महाद्युतिः
So also in darkness, he alone is to be known as the great radiant one.
सर्वलोकेषु लोकेश इज्यते बहुधा प्रभुः
In all worlds, the Lord of worlds is worshipped in many forms, the mighty one.
आधाराधेयभावेन विकारास्ते ऽविकारिणः
By the relation of support and supported, the modifications belong to the unchanging one.
परस्परधिकाश्चैव प्रविष्टास्ते परस्परम्
They enter into each other, being mutually superior in various ways.
प्रागासन्नविशेषास्तु विशेषो ऽन्यविशेषणात्
The earlier states were undifferentiated; distinction arises from other differentiation.
गुणोपचयसारेण परिच्छेदो विशेषतः
Through the essence of the accumulation of qualities, separation occurs distinctly.
