बिभेत्यल्पश्रुताद्वेदो मामयं प्रहरिष्यति
The Veda fears the one of little learning, thinking, 'He will strike me down.'
नापदं प्राप्य मुह्येत यथेष्टां प्राप्नुयाद्गतिम्
Having attained this section, one should not be deluded and will obtain the desired path.
निरुक्तमस्य यो वेद सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Whoever knows its etymology is freed from all sins.
संसर्गकाले ऽपि करोति मर्ग संहार काले च न वास्ति भूयः
Even at the time of dissolution, it creates a path; at the time of destruction, there is no return.
कुत्र सत्रं समभत्तेवषामद्भुतकर्मणाम्
Where was the sacrificial session held by those of wondrous deeds?
आचचक्षे पुराणं च कथं तत्सप्रभञ्जनः
And how did the wise one recount the Purāṇa there?
इति संचोदितः सूतः प्रत्युवाच शुभं वचः
Thus urged, Sūta spoke auspicious words in reply.
यावन्तं चाभवत्कालं यथा च समवर्तत
For as long as it lasted, and in what manner it was conducted,
सत्रं हि ते ऽतिपुण्यं च सहस्रपरिवत्सरान्
That sacrificial session of theirs was exceedingly meritorious and lasted a thousand years.
इडाया यत्र पत्नीत्वं शामित्रं यत्र बुद्धिमान्
There, Iḍā became the wife, and Śāmitra, the wise one, was present.
विबुधाश्चोषिरे तत्र सहस्रपरिवत्सरान्
The gods drank there for a thousand years.
कर्मणा तेन विख्यातं नैमिषं मुनिपूजितम्
By that act, Naimisha became renowned and honored by sages.
रोहिणी स सुता तत्र गोमती साभवत् क्षणात्
There, Rohini gave birth to a daughter, and Gomati appeared in an instant.
रुन्धत्याः सुतायात्रादानमुत्तमतेजसः
From the daughter of Rundhati came a son of supreme brilliance.
यत्र वैरं समभवद्विश्वामित्रवसिष्ठयोः
There, enmity arose between Vishvamitra and Vasishtha.
पराभवो वसिष्ठस्य यस्य ज्ञाने ह्यवर्त्तयत्
Vasishtha's defeat occurred, for his wisdom was obstructed.
नैमिषं जज्ञिरे यस्मान्नैमिषीयास्ततः स्मृताः
Because Naimisha was born there, its people are called Naimishiyas.
पुरूरवसि विक्रान्ते प्रशासति वसुंधराम्
When Pururavas, the mighty, ruled the earth,
तुतोष नैव रत्नानां लोभादिति हि नः श्रुतम्
He was never pleased by the abundance of gems, for he was not greedy, as we have heard.
आजहार च तत्सत्रमुर्वश्या सह संगतः
He performed that sacrifice, united with Urvashi.
यं गर्भं सुषुवे गङ्गा पावकाद्दीप्ततेजसम्
The child whom Ganga bore, radiant with fiery energy,
हिरण्मयं ततश्चके यज्ञवाटं महात्मनाम्
Then he made a golden sacrificial altar for the great souls.
स प्रविश्य ततः सत्रे तेषाममिततेजसाम्
He entered then into the sacrifice of those of immeasurable brilliance.
तं दृष्ट्वा महादाश्वर्यं यज्ञवाटं हिरण्मयम्
Seeing that wondrous golden sacrificial altar,
नैमिषेयास्ततस्तस्य चुक्रुधुर्नृपतिं भृशम्
The Naimishiyas then became greatly angry with the king.
तपोनिष्ठाश्च राजानं मुनयो देवचोदिताः
The ascetics, prompted by the gods, opposed the king.
और्वशेयैस्ततस्तस्य युद्धं चक्रे नृपो भुवि
Then, the king fought a battle on earth with the descendants of Urvashi.
स तेष्ववभृथेष्वेव धर्म्मशीलो महीपतिः
That righteous king, among them at the ablutions, remained steadfast in dharma.
शान्तयित्वा तु राजानं तदा ब्रह्मविदस्तथा
Then, having calmed the king, those knowers of Brahman acted accordingly.
बभूव सत्रे तेषां तु ब्रह्मचर्यं महात्मनाम्
In their sacrificial assembly, the great souls observed celibacy.
