विपर्ययो न तेष्वस्ति कालात्स्वाभाविकं परम्
There is no reversal for them, except for what is natural due to time.
स्वधर्मेणैव धर्म ज्ञास्ते रक्षन्ति परस्परम्
They protect one another by knowledge of dharma, each through their own duty.
एतावदेव श्रोतव्यं शाकद्वीपनिवासिनाम्
This much should be heard regarding the inhabitants of Shaka-dvipa.
पुष्करेण तु द्वीपेन वृतः क्षीरोदको बहिः
Surrounded by the continent of Pushkara, outside is the ocean of milk.
पुष्करे पर्वतः श्रीमानेक एव महाशिलः
On Pushkara there is a single splendid mountain, made of great stone.
द्वीपस्य तस्य पूर्वर्द्धे चित्रसानुः स्थितो महान्
In the eastern half of that continent stands the great mountain Citrashanu.
उर्द्धं चैव चतुस्त्रिंशत्सहस्राणि महीतलात्
And thirty-four thousand (yojanas) above the surface of the earth,
स्थितो वेलासमीपे तु नवचन्द्र इवोदितः
It stands near the shore, like the newly risen moon.
तावदेव च विस्तीर्णः सर्वतः परिमण्डलः
It is spread out to the same extent, perfectly circular on all sides.
एक एव महासारः सन्निवेशो द्विधा कृतः
There is but one great expanse, arranged in two divisions.
पुष्करद्वीपविस्ताराद्विस्तीर्णो ऽसौ समन्ततः
It is as broad all around as the expanse of Puṣkara-dvīpa.
अभितो मानसस्याथ पर्वतस्य तु मण्डले
And around the circle of Mount Mānasā,
त्स्यैवाभ्यन्तरेणापि धातकीखण्डमुच्यते
Within it as well is what is called the Dhātakī region.
अरोगाः सुखबाहुल्या मानसीं सिद्धिमास्थिताः
Free from disease, abundant in happiness, they have attained the perfection of Mānasī.
अधमोत्तमा न तेष्वस्ति तुल्यास्ते रूपशीलतः
There are no higher or lower among them; they are equal in form and character.
निग्रहो न च दण्डो ऽस्ति न लोभो न परिग्रहः
There is no punishment or penalty, no greed or acquisition.
वर्णाश्रमौ वा वार्ता वा पाशुपाल्यं वणिक्पथः
There are no castes or stages of life, no agriculture, no herding, no trade.
वर्षद्वये सर्वमेतत्पुष्करस्य न विद्यते
In those two regions of Puṣkara, none of these exist.
उद्भिदान्युदकान्यत्र गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च
There are self-grown plants, waters, and mountain springs there.
सर्वर्त्तुसुसुखस्तत्र जराक्रमविवर्जितः
In every season, there is great happiness there, untouched by the onset of old age.
आनुपूर्व्याद्विधिः कृत्स्नः पुष्करस्य प्रकीर्त्तितः
Thus, the complete order of Puṣkara has been described in sequence.
विस्तारान्मण्डलाच्चैव पुष्करस्य समेन तु
And in extent and in circle, equal to Puṣkara,
द्वीपस्यानन्तरो यस्तु सामुद्रस्तत्समस्तु सः
The region next to that continent is called Sāmudra, and it is just as vast.
अपां चैव समुद्रेकात्सामुद्र इति संज्ञितः
Because it is filled with water, it is known as Sāmudra.
तस्माद्वर्षमिति प्रोक्तं प्रजानां सुखदं यतः
Therefore, it is called 'rain' because it brings happiness to living beings.
रतिप्रबधनात्मिद्धं वर्षं तत्तेषु तेन वै
Rain, ignited by the essence of pleasure and increase, arises among them in this way.
प्रक्षीयमाणे बहुले क्षीयते ऽस्तमिते खगे
When it diminishes greatly, it wanes as the bird sets.
तथोपक्षीयमाणे ऽपि स्वात्मन्येवावकृष्यते
Likewise, when it is reduced, it is drawn back into its own nature.
महोदधिगतं तोयं स्वत उद्रिच्यते तथा
Just as water in the great ocean rises up by itself.
उदयास्तमये त्विन्दौ पक्षयोः शुक्लकृष्णयोः
At sunrise and sunset, during the bright and dark fortnights.
