तस्यापरेण सुमहाञ्जलधारो महागिरिः
Beyond it is a great mountain, Sumahan, with abundant streams.
ततो वर्षं प्रभवति वर्षाकाले प्रजास्विह
From there, rain arises during the rainy season for the beings here.
रेवती दिवि नक्षत्रं पितामहकृतो विधिः
Revatī is a constellation in the sky; the ordinance was established by the grandsire.
तस्माच्छ्यामत्वमापन्नाः प्रजाः पूर्वमिमाः किल
Therefore, these earlier beings became dark in complexion.
तस्यापरे चांबिकेयो दुर्गशैलो महागिरिः
Beyond it is Ambikeya, the fortress mountain, a great peak.
केसरी केसरयुतो यतो वायुः प्रजापतिः
Kesarī, adorned with lotuses, from which the wind, the lord of creatures, arises.
द्वितीयं जलधारस्य सुकुमारमिति स्मृतम्
The second of the streams is known as Sukumara.
अस्तस्यापि शुभं वर्षं विज्ञेयं कुसुमोत्तरम्
Its auspicious rainfall is known as Kusumottara.
द्वीपस्य परिमाणं तु ह्रस्वदीर्घत्वमेव च
The measure of the continent, as well as its length and breadth,
शाको नाम महोत्सेधस्तस्य पूज्या महानुगाः
There is one called Shaka, of great elevation, whose inhabitants are highly revered.
नद्यश्चापि महापुण्या गङ्गाः सप्तविधास्तथा
And there are also great and meritorious rivers, as well as seven forms of the Ganga.
इक्षुश्च वेणुका चैव गभस्तिः सप्तमी तथा
Ikshu, Venuka, Gabhasti, and likewise the seventh, Saptami.
सहस्रशः समाख्याता यतो वर्षति वासवः
They are said to be in thousands, from where Indra causes rain.
शक्यं वै परिसंख्यातुं पुण्यास्ताः सरिदुत्तमाः
It is possible to enumerate those most sacred rivers.
शांशपायनविस्तीर्णो द्वीपो ऽसौ चक्रसंस्थितः
That continent, broad as a shalmali tree, is arranged in the form of a wheel.
सर्वधातुविचित्रैश्च मणिविद्रुमभूषितैः
It is adorned with various minerals and decorated with jewels and coral.
वृक्षैः पुष्पफलोपेतैः समन्ताद्धनधान्यवान्
With trees bearing flowers and fruits on all sides, it abounds in wealth and grain.
शाकद्वीपस्य विस्तारात्समेन तु समंन्ततः
The expanse of Shaka-dvipa is equal on all sides.
वर्णाश्रमसमाकीर्णा देशास्ते सप्त वै स्मृताः
Those seven regions are said to be filled with people of all castes and stages of life.
धर्मस्य चाव्यभीचारादेकान्तसुखिताः प्रजाः
Because of unwavering adherence to dharma, the people are supremely happy.
विपर्ययो न तेष्वस्ति कालात्स्वाभाविकं परम्
There is no reversal for them, except for what is natural due to time.
स्वधर्मेणैव धर्म ज्ञास्ते रक्षन्ति परस्परम्
They protect one another by knowledge of dharma, each through their own duty.
एतावदेव श्रोतव्यं शाकद्वीपनिवासिनाम्
This much should be heard regarding the inhabitants of Shaka-dvipa.
पुष्करेण तु द्वीपेन वृतः क्षीरोदको बहिः
Surrounded by the continent of Pushkara, outside is the ocean of milk.
पुष्करे पर्वतः श्रीमानेक एव महाशिलः
On Pushkara there is a single splendid mountain, made of great stone.
द्वीपस्य तस्य पूर्वर्द्धे चित्रसानुः स्थितो महान्
In the eastern half of that continent stands the great mountain Citrashanu.
उर्द्धं चैव चतुस्त्रिंशत्सहस्राणि महीतलात्
And thirty-four thousand (yojanas) above the surface of the earth,
स्थितो वेलासमीपे तु नवचन्द्र इवोदितः
It stands near the shore, like the newly risen moon.
तावदेव च विस्तीर्णः सर्वतः परिमण्डलः
It is spread out to the same extent, perfectly circular on all sides.
एक एव महासारः सन्निवेशो द्विधा कृतः
There is but one great expanse, arranged in two divisions.
