देशस्यानुविधानेन कालस्यानुविधाः स्मृताः
The divisions of time are said to follow the divisions of the land.
सुरूपाश्च सुवेषाश्च ह्यरोगा बलिनस्तथा
They are handsome, well-dressed, free from disease, and strong.
प्लक्षद्वीपादिषु ज्ञेयः शाकद्वीपान्तिकेषु वै
This should be understood in the islands beginning with Plakṣa and near the Śāka island.
दिव्यौषधिफलोपेतः सर्वौंषधिवनस्पतिः
All the trees there bear divine herbs and fruits, and all plants are medicinal.
जंबूवृक्षेम संख्यातस्तस्य मध्ये द्विजोत्तमाः
O best of twice-born, the Jambu tree is counted at the center of that place.
स तत्र पूज्यते स्थाने मध्ये जनपदस्य ह
It is worshipped there, in the middle of the region, indeed.
प्लक्षद्वीपसमेनैव वैपुल्यद्विस्तरेण तु
Śālmaladvīpa is equal in extent and breadth to Plakṣadvīpa.
आनुपूर्व्यात्समासेन शाल्मलं तु निबोधत
Now, hear in order and briefly about Śālmaladvīpa.
शाल्मलेन समुद्रस्तु द्वीपेनेक्षुरसोदकः
The ocean around Śālmaladvīpa is filled with water tasting like sugarcane juice.
तत्रापि पर्वताः सप्त विज्ञेया रत्नयोनयः
There also, seven mountains are to be known, sources of jewels.
प्रथमः सूर्यसंकाशः कुमुदो नाम पर्वतः
The first mountain, shining like the sun, is called Kumuda.
द्वितीयः पर्वतश्चात्र ह्युत्तमो नाम विश्रुतः
The second mountain there is renowned as Uttama.
तृतियः पर्वतस्तत्र बलाहक इति श्रुतः
The third mountain there is known as Balāhaka.
चतुर्थः पर्वतो द्रोणो यत्र सा वै सहोषधिः
The fourth mountain is Droṇa, where that great medicinal herb is found.
कङ्कस्तु पञ्चमस्तत्र पर्वतः सुमहोदयः
Kaṅka is the fifth mountain there, of great eminence.
षष्ठस्तु पर्वतस्तत्र महिषो मेघसन्निभः
The sixth mountain there is Mahiṣa, resembling a cloud.
सप्तमः पर्वतस्तत्र ककुद्मान्नाम भाष्यते
The seventh mountain there is called Kakudmān.
प्रजापतिमुपादाय प्रजाभ्यो विधिवत्स्वयम्
Taking Prajāpati as the origin, he himself, according to the proper method, for the offspring—
तेषां वर्षाणि वक्ष्यामि सर्पैव तु शुभानि वै
I shall declare to you their regions, which are truly auspicious like serpents.
बलाहकस्य जीमूतं द्रोणस्य हरितं स्मृतम्
Jīmūta is of Balāhaka, Droṇa is remembered as green.
ककुदः सुप्रदं नाम सप्तैतानि तु सप्तधा
Kakuda is named Suprada; these seven are indeed divided sevenfold.
ज्योतिः शान्तिस्तथा तुष्टा चन्द्रा शुक्रा विमोचनी
Jyotiḥ, Śānti, Tuṣṭā, Candra, Śukra, Vimocanī—
तासां समीपगाश्चान्याः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः
Near them are others, by the hundreds and thousands.
इत्येष संनिवेशो वः शाल्मलस्य प्रकीर्त्तितः
Thus this arrangement of Śālmalī has been described for you.
शाल्मलिर्विपुलस्कन्धस्तस्य नाम्ना स उच्यते
Śālmalī, with its broad trunk, is so called by name.
विस्तराच्छाल्मलस्वैव समे न तु समन्ततः
In extent, Śālmalī itself is equal, but not all around.
यथाश्रुतं यथान्यायं ब्रुवतो मे निबोधत
Listen to me as I speak, as heard and as is proper.
सुरोदकः परिवृतः कुशद्वीपेन सर्वतः
Surodaka is surrounded on all sides by the Kuśa island.
सप्तैव च गिरींस्तत्र वर्ण्यमानान्निबोधत
There too are seven mountains; listen as they are described.
द्वीपस्य प्रथमस्तस्य द्वितीयो हेमपर्वतः
The first of that island, the second is the Hemaparvata.
