पयोदं तु सरो नीले सुशुभ्रं पुण्डरीकवत्
The lake Payoda is deep blue, radiant, and adorned with lotuses.
श्वेतात्प्रवर्त्तते पुण्यं सरयूर्मानसाद्ध्रुवम्
From the white region flows the sacred river Sarayu, certainly originating from Manasa.
सरः कुरुषु विख्यातं पद्ममीनद्विजाकुलम्
The lake in the Kuru region is renowned, teeming with lotuses, fish, and birds.
अन्ये चाप्यत्र विख्याताः पद्मामीनद्विजाकुलाः
Other lakes here are also famous, filled with lotuses, fish, and birds.
तेभ्यः शान्ता य माध्वी च द्वे नद्यौ संबभूवतुः
From these, the tranquil and honey-sweet two rivers were born.
उद्भिदान्युदकान्यत्र प्रवहन्ति सरिद्वराः
Here, springs and waters emerge, and noble rivers flow forth.
पूर्वायता महापर्वा निमग्ना लवणाभसि
Stretching eastward, the great ridges are submerged in the salty ocean.
उदग्याता उदीच्यान्ता अवगाढा महोदधिम्
Rising northward, they reach the northern end, plunging into the great ocean.
प्रतीच्यामायतास्ते वै प्रविष्टा लवणोदधिम
Those stretching westward have entered the salty ocean.
आयतास्ते महाशैलाः समुद्रं दक्षिणं प्रति
These vast mountains extend toward the southern sea.
तत्र संवर्त्तको नाम सो ऽग्निः पिबति तज्जलम्
There, the fire named Samvartaka consumes that water.
द्वादशैते प्रविष्टा हि पर्वता लवणोदधिम्
These twelve mountains have entered the salty ocean.
यदेतद्दृश्यते चन्द्रे श्वेते कृष्णशशाकृति
What is seen on the moon, white with the shape of a black hare,
इहोदितस्य दृश्यन्ते यथान्ये ऽन्यत्र चोदिते
Is visible here when it rises, just as it is elsewhere when it rises.
आरोग्यायुः प्रमाणानां धर्मतः कामतोर्ऽथतः
Health, lifespan, and measures are determined by righteousness, desire, and wealth.
इत्येषा धारयन्तीदं पृथ्वी विश्वं जगत्स्थितम्
Thus, this earth sustains the entire universe and all living beings.
शृणुतेमं यथातत्त्वं ब्रुवतो मे द्विजोत्तमाः
Hear now, O best of twice-born, as I speak this truthfully.
विस्तराद्द्विगुणश्चास्य परिणाहः समन्ततः
Its circumference is twice as great in every direction.
तत्र पुण्या जनपदाश्चिरान्न म्रियते जनः
There, the regions are virtuous, and people do not die for a long time.
तत्रापि पर्वताः पुण्याः सप्तैव मणिभूषणाः
There too are seven sacred mountains, adorned with jewels.
ब्लक्षद्वीपादिषु त्वेषु सप्त सप्त तु पञ्चसु
In Plaksha and the other islands, there are seven in each of the five.
प्लक्षद्वीपे तु वक्ष्यामि सप्तद्वीपान् महा बलान्
Now I shall describe the seven mighty islands in Plaksha.
ख्यायते यस्य नाम्ना तु वर्षं गोमेदसंज्ञितम्
The region known by name is called Gomeda.
अश्विभ्याममृतस्यार्थमोषध्यो यत्र संभृताः
There, the herbs sought for ambrosia by the Ashvins are gathered.
तत्राचले समुत्पन्नौ पूर्वं नारदपर्वतौ
In that mountain, Narada and Parvata were born in ancient times.
छन्दमृत्युः पुरा तस्मिन्दुन्दुभिः सादितः सुरैः
Long ago, Chandamṛtyu and Dundubhi were slain there by the gods.
पञ्चमः सोमको नाम देवैर्यत्रामृतं पुरा
The fifth is called Somaka, where the gods once obtained ambrosia.
षष्टस्तु सुमना नाम सप्तमर्षभ उच्यते
The sixth is named Sumanā, and the seventh is called Vṛṣabha.
वैभ्राजः सप्तमस्तत्र भ्राजिष्णुः स्फाटिको महान्
Vaibhrāja is the seventh, shining brightly, and is a great crystal mountain.
तेषां वर्षाणि वक्ष्यामि नामतस्तु यथाक्रमम्
I shall now tell you the names of their regions, in order.
