दृश्यते भास्वरो रात्रौ देवी त्रिपथगा तु सा
At night, the radiant goddess Tripathaga is seen there.
भवोत्तमाङ्गे पतिता संरूद्धा यौगमायया
Falling upon the supreme body of Bhava, she was restrained by Yogamaya.
कृतं तु तैर्बिदुसरस्ततो बिन्दुसरः स्मृतम्
By them, the lake Bidusara was created, and thus Bindusara became renowned.
चिन्तयामास मनसा शङ्करक्षेपमं प्रति
He contemplated in his mind regarding the delay caused by Shankara.
ज्ञात्वा तम्या अभिप्रायं क्रूरं देव्याश्चिकीर्षितम्
Having understood that dark intention and the cruel purpose desired by the goddess,
तस्यावलेपं ज्ञात्वा तु नद्याःक्रुद्धस्तुशङ्करः
Knowing her arrogance, Śaṅkara became angry at the river.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु दृष्ट्वा राजानमग्रतः
At that very moment, seeing the king standing before him,
अनेन तोषितश्चाहं नद्यर्थं पूर्वमेव तु
He said, 'I have already been pleased by him before, for the sake of the river.'
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा धारय स्वर्णदीमिति
Having heard the words of Brahmā, 'Bear the golden river,'
नदीं भगीरथस्यार्थे तपसोग्रेण तोषितः
For the sake of Bhagīratha, the river was pleased by his intense austerity.
तिस्रः प्ताचीमिमुखं प्रतीचीं तिस्र एव तु
Three flowed eastward, and three indeed to the west.
नलिनी ह्लादिनी चैव पावनी चैव प्राच्यगाः
Nalinī, Hlādinī, and Pāvanī are the rivers flowing eastward.
सप्तमी त्वन्वगात्तासां दक्षिणेन भगीरथम्
The seventh of them went southward, following Bhagīratha.
सप्तैता भावयन्तीदं हिमाह्वं वर्षमेव तु
These seven, sustaining this land called Himāhva, indeed bring the rains.
नानादेशान्प्लावयन्त्यो मलेच्छप्रायास्तु सर्वशः
Flooding various regions, mostly inhabited by foreigners.
शिलीन्ध्रान्कुन्त लांश्चीनान्बर्बरान्यवनाध्रकान्
The Śilīndhras, Kuntalas, Cīnas, Barbaras, Yavanas, and Ādhrakas.
कृत्वा त्रिधा सिंहवन्तं सीतागात्पश्चिमोद धिम्
Having divided Siṃhavanta into three parts, Sītā went to the western ocean.
भद्रास्तुषारांल्लाम्याकान्बाह्लवान्पारटान्खशान्
The Bhadrās, Tuṣāras, Lāmyākas, Bāhlavas, Pāraṭas, and Khaśas.
दरदांश्च सकाश्मीरान् गान्धरान् रौरसान् कुहान्
The Daradas, those with the Kāśmīras, the Gāndhāras, Raurasas, and Kuhas.
सैन्धवान्रन्ध्रकरकाञ्छमठाभीररोहकान्
The Saindhavas, Randhrakarakas, Chamaṭhas, Abhīras, and Rohakas.
गन्धर्वकिन्नरान्यक्षान्रक्षोविद्याधरोरगान्
The Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Vidyādharas, and serpents.
किरातांश्चपुलिन्दांश्च कुरून् सभरतानपि
And also the Kirātas, Pulindas, Kurus, and the Bharatas.
सुह्मोत्तरांश्च वङ्गांश्च ताम्रलिप्तांस्तथैव च
The regions of Suhma, Uttara, Vanga, and likewise Tamralipta,
ततः प्रतिहता विन्ध्यात्प्रविष्टा लवणोदधिम्
Then, repelled from the Vindhya, she entered the salt ocean.
प्रावयन्त्युपभागांश्च नैषधांश्च त्रिगर्त कान्
She drenched the adjoining lands, as well as the Nishadha and Trigarta regions.
केकरानौष्टकर्णांश्च किरातानपि चैव हि
The Kekaras, the Aushtakarnas, and also the Kiratas.
आमण्डलं समुद्रस्य तिरोभूतांश्च पूर्वतः
The circle of the ocean and those vanished to the east.
सुपथान्पावयं तीह त्विन्द्रद्युम्नसरोपि च
The good paths, the Pāvaya region here, and the lake of Indradyumna as well.
मध्यतोजानकिमथो कुथप्रावरणान्ययौ
In the middle, she went to Janaki, and then to Kutha and Pravarana.
ततस्तु नलिनी प्रायात् प्राचीमाशां जवेन तु
Then Nalinī swiftly went toward the eastern direction.
