कैलासाद्दक्षिणे प्राच्यां शिवसत्त्वौषधिं गिरिम्
To the southeast of Kailāsa is the mountain of Śiva's essence and medicinal herbs.
लोहितो हेमशृङ्गश्च गिरिः सूर्यप्रभो महान्
There is the great mountain Lohita, with golden peaks, shining like the sun.
तस्मात्पुण्यः प्रभवति लौहित्यः स नदो महान्
From there flows the sacred and mighty river Lauhitya.
तस्मिन्गिरौ निवसति यक्षो मणिधरो वशी
On that mountain dwells the Yakṣa Maṇidhara, the masterful one.
कैलासाद्दक्षिणे पार्श्वे क्रूरसत्त्वौषधिर्गिरिः
To the southern side of Kailāsa is the mountain of fierce essence and medicinal herbs.
सर्वधातुमयस्तत्र सुमहान्वैद्युतो गिरिः
There stands a vast mountain composed of all metals, blazing like lightning.
तस्मात्प्रभवेते पुण्या सरयूर्लोकविश्रुता
Therefore, the sacred Sarayu, renowned among the worlds, originates from there.
कुबेरा नुचरस्तत्र प्रहेतितनयो वशी
Kubera's attendant, Vaśī, the son of Praheti, resides there.
अतरिक्षचरैर्घोरैर्यातुधानशतैर्वृतः
He is surrounded by fierce aerial beings and hundreds of terrifying yakshas.
अरुणः पर्वतश्रेष्ठो रुक्मधातुमयः शुभः
Aruna, the foremost mountain, splendid and made of gold ore, stands there.
शातकैंभमयैः शुभ्रैः शिलाजालैः समावृतः
It is encircled by beautiful rocks composed of pure shatakumbha metal.
मुञ्जवास्तु महादिव्यो दुर्गः शैलो हिमाचितः
The great, divine fortress mountain, covered with munja grass and snow, rises there.
तस्या पादात्प्रभवति शैलोदं नाम तत्सरः
From its base arises the lake named Shailoda.
सा चक्षुः सीतयोर्मध्ये प्रविष्टा लवणोदधिम्
That lake entered between the two banks of Sita and the salt ocean.
सव्योत्तरेण कैलासाच्छिवः सत्त्वौषधिर्गिरिः
To the left and north of Kailasa lies Shiva's mountain, rich in medicinal herbs.
हिरण्यशृङ्गः सुमहान् दिव्यो मणिमयो गिरिः
Hiranyashringa, a vast and divine mountain made of jewels, stands there.
रम्यं बिन्दुसरो नाम यत्र राजा भगीरथः
There is the delightful lake called Bindusara, where King Bhagiratha dwelled.
दिवं यास्यन्ति ते बुर्वे गङ्गतोयपरिप्लुताः
Those ancestors who are immersed in the waters of the Ganga ascend to heaven.
सोमपादात्प्रसूता सा सप्तधा प्रतिपद्यते
From Soma's foot, she is born and divides into seven streams.
तत्रेष्ट्वा तु गतः सिद्धिं शक्रः सर्वैः सुरैः सह
Having performed sacrifices there, Indra attained perfection together with all the gods.
दृश्यते भास्वरो रात्रौ देवी त्रिपथगा तु सा
At night, the radiant goddess Tripathaga is seen there.
भवोत्तमाङ्गे पतिता संरूद्धा यौगमायया
Falling upon the supreme body of Bhava, she was restrained by Yogamaya.
कृतं तु तैर्बिदुसरस्ततो बिन्दुसरः स्मृतम्
By them, the lake Bidusara was created, and thus Bindusara became renowned.
चिन्तयामास मनसा शङ्करक्षेपमं प्रति
He contemplated in his mind regarding the delay caused by Shankara.
ज्ञात्वा तम्या अभिप्रायं क्रूरं देव्याश्चिकीर्षितम्
Having understood that dark intention and the cruel purpose desired by the goddess,
तस्यावलेपं ज्ञात्वा तु नद्याःक्रुद्धस्तुशङ्करः
Knowing her arrogance, Śaṅkara became angry at the river.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु दृष्ट्वा राजानमग्रतः
At that very moment, seeing the king standing before him,
अनेन तोषितश्चाहं नद्यर्थं पूर्वमेव तु
He said, 'I have already been pleased by him before, for the sake of the river.'
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा धारय स्वर्णदीमिति
Having heard the words of Brahmā, 'Bear the golden river,'
नदीं भगीरथस्यार्थे तपसोग्रेण तोषितः
For the sake of Bhagīratha, the river was pleased by his intense austerity.
