अनूपास्तुण्डिकेराश्च वीतिहोत्रा ह्यवन्तयः
The Anupas, Tundikeras, Vitihotras, and the people of Avanti,
अतो देशान्प्रवक्ष्यामि पर्वताश्रयिणश्च ये
Now I shall describe the regions and those who dwell in the mountains.
अपप्राव रणाश्चैव ऊर्णा दर्वाः सहूहुकाः
Apapra, Rana, Urna, Darva, and Sahuhuka—
चत्वारि भारते वर्षे युगानि ऋषयो ऽब्रुवन्
The sages have declared that there are four yugas in the land of Bharata.
तेषां निसर्गं वक्ष्यामि उपरिष्टादशेषतः
I will now describe their nature to you fully and in detail.
आचक्ष्व नो यथातत्त्वं कीर्त्तितं भारतं त्वया
Tell us, as it truly is, what you have recounted about Bharata.
प्लक्षखण्डः किंपुरुषे सुमहान्नन्दनोपमः
Plaksha Khanda in Kimpurusha is vast, comparable to Nandana.
सुवर्णवर्णाः पुरुषाः स्त्रियश्चाप्सरसो पमाः
There, the men are golden in color, and the women are like celestial nymphs.
जायन्ते मानवास्तत्र निस्तप्तकनकप्रभाः
Humans are born there with a radiance like refined gold.
तस्य किंपुरुषाः सर्वे ऽपिबन् हि रसमुत्तमम्
All the Kimpurushas there drink the most excellent juice.
महारजतसंकाशा जायन्ते तत्र मानवाः
In that place, humans are born with the luster of great silver.
हरिवर्षे नराः सर्वे पिबन्तीक्षुरसं शुफम्
In Harivarsha, all men drink pure sugarcane juice.
हरिवर्षे तु जीवन्ति सर्वे मुदितमानसाः
And in Harivarsha, all live with joyful hearts.
मध्यमं यन्मया प्रोक्तं नाम्ना वर्षमिलावृतम्
The central region I have mentioned is called Ilavrita by name.
चन्द्रसूर्यै सनक्षत्रौ न प्रकाशाविला वृते
There, the moon, sun, and stars do not shine with their light.
पद्मपत्रसुगन्धाश्च जायन्ते तत्र मानवाः
There, humans are born with the fragrance of lotus petals.
मनस्विनो भुक्तभोगाः सत्कर्मफलभोगिनः
They are wise, enjoy pleasures, and partake in the fruits of good deeds.
त्रयोदशसहस्राणि वर्षाणां ते नरोत्तमाः
Those excellent men live for thirteen thousand years.
मेरोः प्रतिदिशं यच्च नवसाहस्रविस्तृतम्
Extending from Meru in every direction, it measures nine thousand in breadth.
यतुरस्रं समन्ताच्च शरावाकारसंस्थितम्
It is four-sided on all sides and shaped like a dish.
चतुस्त्रिंशत्सहस्राणि गन्धमादनपर्वतः
Gandhamadana mountain is thirty-four thousand (units) in extent.
चत्वारिंशत्सहस्राणि परिवृद्धो महीतलात्
It has grown to forty thousand (units) from the surface of the earth.
पूर्वेण माल्यवाञ्छैलस्तत्प्रमाणः प्रकीर्त्तितः
To the east lies the Malyavan mountain, said to be of equal measure.
तेषां मध्ये महामेरुः स्वैः प्रमाणैः प्रतिष्ठितः
Among them, the great Meru stands established with its own dimensions.
विस्तरस्तत्प्रमाणः स्यादायामो नियुतं स्मृतः
Its breadth is of the same measure; its length is said to be one niyuta.
आयामाः परिहीयन्ते चतुरस्रसमाः स्मृताः
The lengths decrease, and they are remembered as being square in shape.
प्रभिन्नाञ्जनसंकाशा जम्बूरसवती नदी
The Jambu river, rich in water, appears broken and dark like collyrium.
सुदर्शनो नाम महाञ्जम्बूवृक्षः सनातनः
There is a great, eternal Jambu tree named Sudarshana.
तस्य नाम्ना समा ख्यातो जम्बूद्वीपो वनस्पतेः
By the name of that tree, the land is renowned as Jambudvipa.
उत्सेधो वृक्षराजस्य दिवं स्पृशति सर्वतः
The height of the king of trees reaches the sky in all directions.
