वर्षं तद्भारतं नाम यत्रेयं भारती प्रजा
That land is called Bhārata, where these Bhārata people dwell.
निरुक्तवचनाच्चैवं वर्षं तद्भारतं स्मृतम्
Because of the etymology of the word, that land is remembered as Bhārata.
न खल्वन्यत्र मर्त्यानां भूमौ कर्म विधीयते
Indeed, nowhere else on earth is action prescribed for mortals.
समुद्रातरिता ज्ञेयास्ते त्वगम्याः परस्परम्
Those are to be known as separated by the ocean, and they are mutually inaccessible.
नागद्वीपस्तथा सौम्यो गान्धर्वस्त्वथ वारुणः
Nāga-dvīpa, Saumya, Gāndharva, and Vāruṇa are thus named.
योजनानां सहस्रे तु द्वीपो ऽयं दक्षिणोत्तरात्
This island, from south to north, is a thousand yojanas in extent.
तिर्यगुत्तरविस्तीर्मः सहस्राणि नवैव तु
Its breadth from east to west is indeed nine thousand yojanas.
पूर्वे किराता ह्यस्यान्ते पश्चिमे यवनाः स्मृताः
On the east, the Kirātas are at its end; on the west, the Yavanas are remembered.
इज्यायुधवणिज्याभिर्वर्त्तयन्तो व्यवस्थिताः
Engaged in worship, warfare, and trade, they remain steadfast in their pursuits.
धर्मार्थकामसंयुक्तो वर्णानां तु स्वकर्मसु
Joined with righteousness, wealth, and desire, each caste acts according to its own duties.
इह स्वर्गापवर्गार्थं प्रवृत्तिर्येषु मानुषी
Here, human activity is undertaken for the sake of heaven and liberation.
कृत्स्नं जयति यो ह्येनं सम्राडित्यभिधीयते
He who conquers all of this is called the emperor.
स्वराडसौ स्मृतो लौकः पुनर्वक्ष्यामि विस्तरात्
He who rules his own realm is known as a sovereign; I will explain this in detail again.
महेन्द्रो मलयः सह्यः शुक्तिमानृक्षपर्वतः
Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Śuktimān, and Ṛkṣa are the mountains.
तेषां सहस्रश्चान्ये पर्व तास्तु समीपगाः
There are thousands of other mountains among them, and those nearby as well.
संदरः पर्वतश्रेष्ठो वैहारो दुर्दुरस्तथा
Sandara is the foremost mountain, as are Vaihāra and Durdura.
वातन्धमो नागगिरिस्तथा पाण्डुरपर्वतः
Vātandhama, Nāgagiri, and also Pāṇḍura mountain.
पुष्पगिर्युज्जयन्तौ च शैलो रैवतकस्तथा
Puṣpagiri, Ujjayanta, and Raivataka mountain as well.
अन्ये तेभ्यो ऽपरिज्ञाता ह्रस्वाः स्वलपोपजी विनः
Others, unknown among them, are small and sustain little life.
पीयन्ते यैरिमा नद्यो गङ्गा सिंधु सरस्वती
By which these rivers are drunk: Gaṅgā, Sindhu, and Sarasvatī.
इरावती वितस्ता च विपाशा देविका कुहूः
Irāvatī, Vitastā, Vipāśā, Devikā, and Kuhū.
कौशकी त्रिदिवा चैव निष्ठीवी गेडकी तथा
Kauśakī, Tridivā, Niṣṭhīvī, and also Geḍakī.
वेदस्मृतिर्वेदवती वृत्रघ्नी सिंधु रेव च
Veda, Smṛti, Vedavatī, Vṛtraghnī, Sindhu, and Reva.
पाशा चर्मण्वतीनूपा विदिशा वेत्रवत्यपि
Pāśā, Carmaṇvatī, Nūpā, Vidiśā, and also Vetravatī.
शोणो महानदश्चैव नर्म्मदा सुरसा क्रिया
Śoṇa, Mahānada, Narmadā, Surasā, and Kriyā.
तमसा पिप्पला श्येना करमोदा पिशाचिका
Tamasā, Pippalā, Śyenā, Karamodā, and Piśācikā.
सनेरुजा शुक्तिमती मङ्कुती त्रिदिवा क्रतुः
Saneru, Shuktimati, Mankuti, Tridiva, and Kratu.
तापी पयोष्णी निर्विन्ध्या सृपा च निषधा नदी
Tapi, Payoshni, Nirvindhya, Sripa, and the river Nishadha.
तोया चैव महागौरी दुर्गा वान्नशिला तथा
Toya, Mahagauri, Durga, and also Vannashila.
गोदावरी भीमरथी कृष्णवेणाथ बञ्जुला
Godavari, Bhimarathi, Krishnavena, and Banjula.
