सद्यः सञ्जायते ज्ञानं सा दीक्षा शाम्भवी मता
Knowledge arises instantly; this initiation is considered Śāmbhavī.
तत्प्रसादेन शिष्यो ऽपि तद्रूपः सम्प्रकाशते
By the teacher's grace, the disciple too manifests that very form.
तूष्णीं संकल्पयेच्छिष्यं सा दीक्षा मानसी मता
He should silently contemplate the disciple; this is considered the mental initiation.
आदौ कुर्यात्क्रियादीक्षां तत्प्रकारः प्रवक्ष्यते
First, he should perform the ritual initiation; its procedure will be explained.
जिह्वास्यमलशुद्धिं च कृत्वा स्नात्वा यथाविधि
Having purified the tongue and mouth and bathed according to the prescribed manner,
एकान्ते निवसञ्छ्रीमान्मौनी च नियताशनः
Dwelling alone, possessed of fortune, observing silence, and with regulated food,
देवीसूक्तेन संयुक्तं विद्यान्यासं समातृकम्
He should perform the installation of the mantra, accompanied by the Devi Sukta and the mother mantras.
आवाहना सने पाद्यमर्ध्यमाचमनं तथा
With invocation, offering of water for the feet, arghya, and sipping of water,
धूपदीपौ च नैवेद्यं ताम्बूलं च प्रदक्षिणा
Incense, lamps, food offerings, betel, and circumambulation,
अथ पुष्पाञ्जलिं दद्यात्सहस्राक्षरविद्यया
Then he should offer a handful of flowers with the thousand-syllabled mantra.
नोचेत्तत्पूजनं व्यर्थमित्याहुर्वेदवादिनः
Otherwise, that worship is said to be fruitless by those versed in the Vedas.
तावद्भिस्तण्डुलैः शुद्धैः शस्तार्णैस्तत्र नूतनम्
With as many pure and excellent grains as required, new ones should be used there.
न्यग्रोधाश्वत्थमाकन्दजंबूदुम्बरशाखिनाम्
Of banyan, sacred fig, mango, jambu, and udumbara trees,
कुम्भाग्रे निक्षिपेत्पक्वं नारिकेलफलं शुभम्
He should place a ripe and auspicious coconut at the mouth of the pot.
श्रीचिन्तामणिमन्त्रं तु हृदि मातृकमाजपेत्
He should mentally recite the Shri Chintamani mantra, along with the mother mantras, in the heart.
अष्टोत्तरशते जाते पुनर्दीपं प्रदर्शयेत्
When one hundred and eight have been completed, he should again show the lamp.
कारयित्वा प्रणामानां साष्टाङ्गानां त्रयं गुरुः
The guru should have the disciple perform three full prostrations.
श्रीनाथकरुणाराशे परञ्ज्योतिर्मयेश्वरि
O Lord of fortune, ocean of compassion, O supreme light, O Lady!
परं धाम परं ब्रह्म मम त्वं परदेवता
You are the supreme abode, the supreme Brahman, my highest deity.
इत्युक्त्वा गुरुपादाव्जे शिष्यो मूर्ध्नि विधारयेत्
Having spoken thus, the disciple should place his head at the feet of the guru.
गुरुणा कमलासनमुरशासनपुरशासनसेवया लब्धे
When, by the service of the guru—who himself serves the Lord seated on the lotus and the Lord who wields the city as his domain—one obtains [the desired knowledge or initiation],
वामपार्श्वे गुरोस्तिष्ठेदमानी विनयान्वितः
He should stand humbly, filled with reverence, at the left side of the guru.
विमुच्य नेत्रबन्धं तु दर्शयेदर्चनक्रमम्
Releasing the binding of the eyes, he should demonstrate the sequence of worship.
महात्रिपुरसुन्दर्या नैवेद्यमिति चादिशेत्
He should instruct, 'This is the offering for Mahātripurasundarī.'
ततो बहिर्विनिर्गत्य स्थाप्य दार्वासने शुचिम्
Then, going outside, he should seat the pure one (the disciple) on a wooden seat.
शिष्यं श्रीकुम्भसलिलैरभिषिञ्चेत्समन्त्रकम्
He should anoint the disciple with water from the auspicious pot, accompanied by mantras.
अष्टोत्तरशतं मन्त्रं जप्त्वा निद्रामथाविशेत्
Having recited the mantra one hundred and eight times, he should then enter sleep.
दुःस्वप्ने तु जपं कुर्यादष्टोत्तरसहस्रकम्
If he has a bad dream, he should perform japa of the mantra one thousand and eight times.
यदा न दृष्टः स्वप्नो ऽपि तदा सिद्धिश्चिराद्भवेत्
If even a dream is not seen, then attainment will be long delayed.
सद्य एव स शिष्यः स्यात्पङ्क्तिपावनपावनः
Immediately, that disciple becomes a purifier of the line of those who partake in the sacred meal.
