संक्षोभिण्याख्यामुद्रां तु कथयाम्यधुना श्रुणु
Now I will explain the gesture called Saṃkṣobhiṇī; listen.
तर्जन्यो दण्डवत्कृत्वा मध्यमोपर्यनामिके
Make the index finger straight like a staff, above the middle and ring fingers.
क्रियते विन्ध्यदर्पारे मुद्रा विद्राविणी तथा
This is the gesture called Vindhyadarpāri and also Vidrāviṇī.
इयमाकर्षिणी मुद्रा त्रैलोक्याकर्षणे क्षमा
This is the Ākarṣiṇī gesture, capable of attracting the three worlds.
परिवर्तक्रमेणैव मध्यमे तदधोगते
In the same sequence of rotation, the middle finger is placed downward.
अनामिके तु सरले तद्बहिस्तर्जनीद्वयम्
The ring finger remains straight, and both index fingers are placed outside.
मुद्रैषोन्मादिनी नाम्ना ख्याता वातापितापन
This gesture is known as Unmadinī by name, which dispels disorders of wind and bile.
तर्जन्यावपि तेनैव क्रमेण विनियोजयेत्
The index fingers too should be applied in the same sequence.
इयं महाङ्कुशा मुद्रा सर्वकार्यार्थसाधिका
This is the great Ankuśa mudrā, effective for accomplishing all purposes.
तर्जनीभ्यां समाक्रान्ते सर्वोर्ध्वमपि मध्यमे
With both index fingers pressed together, the middle finger is raised upward.
एतद्विज्ञानमात्रेण योगिनीनां प्रियो भवेत्
By merely knowing this, one becomes dear to the Yoginīs.
तर्जन्यङ्गुष्ठयुगलं युगपद्योजयेत्ततः
Then, the pair of index fingers and thumbs should be joined together simultaneously.
बीजमुद्रेयमाचिरात्सर्वसिद्धप्रवर्तिनी
This is the Bīja mudrā, which quickly brings about all accomplishments.
अनामिकामध्यगते तथैव हि कनिष्टिके
The ring finger is placed in the middle, and likewise the little finger.
एषा तु प्रथमा मुद्रा योनिमुद्रेति संज्ञिता
This is the first mudrā, known by the name Yoni mudrā.
पूजाकाले प्रयोक्तव्या यथानुक्रमयोगतः
It should be employed at the time of worship, according to the proper sequence.
श्रीदेवीदर्शने दीक्षा यादृशी तां निवेदय
Describe the initiation that is prescribed for the vision of the revered Goddess.
क्षाल्यन्ते च तथा पुसां दीक्षामाचक्ष्महे ऽत्र ताम्
They are purified in the same way; here, I shall explain that initiation.
गुरुः स्पृशेच्छिष्यतनुं स्पर्शदीक्षेयमीरिता
The teacher should touch the body of the disciple; this is called touch initiation.
सम्यक्पश्येद्गुरुः शिष्यं दृग्दीक्षा सेयमुच्यते
The teacher should look intently at the disciple; this is called gaze initiation.
सद्यः सञ्जायते ज्ञानं सा दीक्षा शाम्भवी मता
Knowledge arises instantly; this initiation is considered Śāmbhavī.
तत्प्रसादेन शिष्यो ऽपि तद्रूपः सम्प्रकाशते
By the teacher's grace, the disciple too manifests that very form.
तूष्णीं संकल्पयेच्छिष्यं सा दीक्षा मानसी मता
He should silently contemplate the disciple; this is considered the mental initiation.
आदौ कुर्यात्क्रियादीक्षां तत्प्रकारः प्रवक्ष्यते
First, he should perform the ritual initiation; its procedure will be explained.
जिह्वास्यमलशुद्धिं च कृत्वा स्नात्वा यथाविधि
Having purified the tongue and mouth and bathed according to the prescribed manner,
एकान्ते निवसञ्छ्रीमान्मौनी च नियताशनः
Dwelling alone, possessed of fortune, observing silence, and with regulated food,
देवीसूक्तेन संयुक्तं विद्यान्यासं समातृकम्
He should perform the installation of the mantra, accompanied by the Devi Sukta and the mother mantras.
आवाहना सने पाद्यमर्ध्यमाचमनं तथा
With invocation, offering of water for the feet, arghya, and sipping of water,
धूपदीपौ च नैवेद्यं ताम्बूलं च प्रदक्षिणा
Incense, lamps, food offerings, betel, and circumambulation,
अथ पुष्पाञ्जलिं दद्यात्सहस्राक्षरविद्यया
Then he should offer a handful of flowers with the thousand-syllabled mantra.
