वासुदेवं परित्राणे संहारे च त्रिलोचनम्
Vasudeva for protection, and Trilocana for dissolution.
ब्रह्मलोके च वैकुण्ठे कैलासे च वसंत्यमी
These reside in Brahmaloka, Vaikuntha, and Kailasa.
विहरन्ती महेशस्य पिधानं नेत्रयोर्व्यधात्
While wandering, she made a covering for Mahesha's eyes.
अन्धकारावृतमभूदतेजस्कं समन्ततः
It became enveloped in darkness, devoid of radiance everywhere.
इति कर्त्तव्यतामूढा न प्रजानन्त किञ्चन
Thus, confused about what should be done, they knew nothing.
त्वया पापं कृतं देवि मम नेत्रपिधानतः
O Devi, you committed a sin by covering my eyes.
सर्वं च वैदिकं कर्म त्वया नाशितमंबिके
All Vedic rites have been destroyed by you, O Ambika.
गत्वा काशीं व्रतं तत्र किञ्चित्कालं समाचर
Go to Kashi and perform a vow there for some time.
आराधयैतां नित्यां त्वं सर्वपापहरीं शिवाम्
Worship this eternal, auspicious one who removes all sins.
इत्यादिश्य महादेवस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
Having thus instructed, Mahadeva vanished from that place.
चिरेण तपसा क्लिष्टामनन्यहृदयां शिवाम्
After a long time, through arduous austerity, with undivided heart, she worshipped Shiva.
वत्से तपोभिरत्युग्रैरलं प्रीतास्मि सुव्रते
O child, through these most severe austerities, I am pleased with you, O virtuous one.
बालार्कायुतसंकाशां सर्वाभरणभूषिताम्
She shone with the radiance of ten thousand young suns, adorned with all ornaments.
पाशाङ्कुशेक्षुकोदण्डपञ्चबाणलसत्कराम्
Holding in her hands a noose, goad, sugarcane bow, and five arrows.
विधातृहरिरुद्रेशसदाशिवपदप्रदाम्
She grants the supreme states of Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, and Sadashiva.
प्रपञ्चद्वयनिर्माणकारिणीं तां परांबिकाम्
That supreme Mother creates both the manifest and unmanifest worlds.
पुलकाचितसर्वाङ्गी हर्षेणोत्फुल्ललोचना
Her whole body was covered with goosebumps, her eyes blossoming with joy.
प्रणिपत्य च साष्टाङ्गं कृत्वा चैव प्रदक्षिणाम्
She bowed down with eight limbs and circumambulated her.
तामाह कृपया वीक्ष्य महात्रिपुरसुंदरी
Mahatripurasundari, seeing her with compassion, spoke to her.
वत्से लभस्व भर्तारं रुद्रं स्वमनसेप्सितम्
O child, obtain Rudra as your husband, just as your heart desires.
अहं त्वमिति को भेदस्त्वमेवाहं न संशयः
I am you and you are me; what difference is there? You are truly me, without doubt.
आमनन्ति हि योगीन्द्रास्त्वामेव ब्रह्मरूपिणीम्
Indeed, the great yogis declare you alone to be of the form of Brahman.
भक्त्या प्रणम्य पश्यन्ती परां प्रीतिमुपाययौ
Having bowed with devotion, she gazed and attained supreme delight.
प्रविष्टा हृदयं तस्याः प्रहृष्टाया महामुने
She entered the heart of the delighted great sage.
स्वप्नः किमेष दृष्टो वा मया किमथ वा भ्रमः
Is this a dream, or have I seen it? Or is it perhaps an illusion?
प्रसन्नवदना सा तु प्रणते वदति स्म सा
With a serene face, she spoke to the one who bowed before her.
मया दृष्टां तु कामाक्षीं युवां चेत्किमपश्यतम्
I have seen Kāmākṣī; but have you two not seen her?
पुष्पाणि पूजनार्हाणि निधायाग्रे समूचतुः
They placed flowers, fit for worship, before her and spoke together.
इत्युक्त्वा पार्श्वयोस्तस्या निषण्णे विनयानते
Having said this, they sat humbly at her side, bowing with reverence.
गौरीसंप्राप्तये दध्यौ कामाक्षीं नियतेन्द्रियः
With his senses restrained, he meditated on Kāmākṣī for the sake of uniting with Gaurī.
