बृहस्पतिश्च तं शुकं शशाप स महाद्युतिः
And Bṛhaspati, of great splendor, cursed that Śuka.
तुर्वसुश्चात्र दौहित्रो यवीयान्यो यदोरभूत्
There, Turvasu, the younger grandson, was born of Yadu.
अनुवंश्यामहात्मानस्तेषां पार्थिवसत्तमाः
Their descendants, of great soul, were the best of kings.
आतिथ्यस्य तु विब्रर्षेः सप्तधा धर्मसंश्रयात्
The hospitality of Vibrarṣa was divided sevenfold, based on righteousness.
हरवंशयशःस्पर्शः शन्तनोर्वीर्यशब्दनम्
The touch of the glory of the lineage of Hara, and the fame of Śantanu's valor.
अनागतानांसंघानां प्रभूणां चोपवर्णनम्
And the description of the future hosts of mighty ones.
नैमित्तिकाः प्राकृतिका यथैवात्यन्तिकाः स्मृताः
The occasional, the natural, and likewise the ultimate are remembered.
अनादृष्टिर्भास्करस्य घोरः संवर्त्तकानलः
The disappearance of the sun, and the terrible fire of dissolution.
भुवादीनां च लोकानां सप्तानां चोपवर्णनम्
And the description of the seven worlds, beginning with the earth.
ब्रह्मणोयोजनाग्रेण परिमाणविनिर्णयः
The determination of the measurement of Brahmā by yojanas.
सर्वेषां चैव सत्त्वानां परिणामविनिर्णयः
And the determination of the transformation of all beings.
गतिरूर्द्धमधश्चोक्ता धर्माधर्मसमाश्रया
The upward and downward courses are described, based on righteousness and unrighteousness.
असंख्यया च दुःखानि ब्रह्मणश्चाप्यनित्यता
And the countless sufferings, and even the impermanence of Brahmā.
दुर्लभत्वं च मोक्षस्य वैराग्याद्दोषदर्शनात्
And the difficulty of attaining liberation, due to the perception of faults through detachment.
नानात्वदर्शनाच्छुद्धस्तवस्तत्र निवर्त्तते
When the perception of diversity ceases, your pure essence is withdrawn there.
आनन्दं ब्रह्मणः प्राप्य न बिभेति कुतश्चन
Having attained the bliss of Brahman, one does not fear anything at all.
कीर्त्यते जगतश्चत्र सर्गप्रलयविक्रियाः
Here are recounted the creations, dissolutions, and transformations of the world.
कीर्त्यते ऋषिवर्गस्य सर्गः पापप्रणाशनः
The creation of the group of sages, which destroys sin, is also described.
सौदासास्थिग्रहश्चास्य विश्वामित्रकृतेन तु
And the gathering of Saudāsa’s bones by Viśvāmitra is told here.
संजज्ञे पितृकन्यायां व्यासश्चापि महामुनिः
The great sage Vyāsa was also born from the daughter of a Pitṛ.
पराशरस्य प्रद्वेपो विश्वामित्र ऋषिं प्रति
The enmity of Parāśara towards the sage Viśvāmitra is described.
देवेन विधिना विप्र विश्वामित्रहितैषिणा
By the will of the god, for the benefit of Viśvāmitra, O Brāhmaṇa, this was done.
एकं वेदं चतुष्पादं चतुर्द्धा पुनरीश्वरः
The Lord divided the single Veda, which had four parts, into four.
तस्य शिष्यप्रशिष्यैश्च शाखा वेदायुताः कृताः
By his disciples and their disciples, countless branches of the Veda were made.
पृष्ट वन्तो विशिष्टास्ते मुनयो धर्मकाङ्क्षिणः
Those distinguished sages, desiring righteousness, questioned further.
सुनाभं दिव्यरूपाभं सप्ताङ्गं शुभशंसनम्
Sunābha, resembling a divine form, with seven limbs and auspicious praise—
पृष्ठतो यात नियतास्ततः प्राप्स्यथ पाटितम्
Having gone behind him in order, you will then receive the recitation.
पुण्यः स देशो मन्तव्यः प्रत्युवाच तदा प्रभुः
That land is to be considered holy; at that time, the Lord replied.
गङ्गा गर्भ यवाहारा नैमिषेयास्तथैव च
The Gaṅgā, the Garbha, the Yavāhāra, and likewise the Naimiṣeyas—
ईशिरे चैव सत्रेण मुनयो नैमिषे तदा
At that time, the sages in Naimiṣa performed a sacrifice as prescribed.
