रजा विरजसः पुत्रः शतजिद्रजसस्तथा
Rajā was the son of Virajas, and Śatajid was the son of Rajas.
विश्वज्योतिष्प्रधानास्ते यैरिमा वर्द्धिताः प्रजाः
These, headed by Viśvajyotis, are those by whom these peoples were increased.
तेषां वंशप्रसूतैस्तु भुक्तेयं भारती पुरा
By those born in their lineage, this land of Bhārata was once enjoyed.
ये ऽतीतास्तैर्युगैः सार्धं राजानस्ते तदन्वयाः
Those kings who have passed away, together with those ages, are their descendants.
एवं स्वायं भुवः सर्गो येनेदं पूरितं जगत्
Thus is the creation of living beings, by whom this world was filled.
तेषां सृष्टिरियं प्रोक्ता युगैः सह विवर्त्तते
This creation of theirs is declared, which evolves together with the ages.
पप्रच्छ नियतं सूतं पृथिव्युद धिविस्तरम्
He asked the sage Sūta about the full extent of the earth.
कियन्ति चैव वर्षाणि तेषु नद्यश्च काः स्मृताः
How many regions are there, and which rivers are remembered among them?
एतत्प्रबूहि नः सर्वं विस्तरेण यथार्थतः
Please tell us all this in detail, exactly as it is.
हन्त वो ऽहं प्रवक्ष्यामि पृथिव्यायामविस्तरम्
Well then, I shall explain to you the expanse of the earth.
द्वीपभेदसहस्राणि सप्तस्वन्तर्गतानि च
There are a thousand divisions of islands, contained within the seven.
सप्त द्वीपान्प्रवक्ष्यामि चन्द्रादित्यग्रहैः सह
I will describe the seven islands, along with the moon, sun, and planets.
अचिन्त्याः खलु ये भावा न तांस्तर्केण साधयेत्
Indeed, those realities which are inconceivable cannot be established by reasoning.
नववर्षं प्रवक्ष्यामि जंबूद्वीपं यथातथम्
I will accurately describe the nine regions of Jambūdvīpa.
शतमेकं सहस्राणां योजनाग्रात्समन्ततः
It measures one hundred thousand yojanas all around.
सिद्धचारणसंकीणः पर्वतैरुपशोभितः
It is crowded with Siddhas and Cāraṇas, and adorned with mountains.
पर्वतप्रभवाभिश्च नदीभिः सर्वतस्ततः
It is surrounded on all sides by rivers originating from mountains.
नवभिश्चावृतः सर्वो भुवनैर्भूतभावनैः
The whole is encircled by nine worlds, the abodes of beings.
जंबूद्वीपस्य विस्तारात् समेन तु समन्ततः
The expanse of Jambūdvīpa is equal on all sides.
अवगाढा ह्युभयतः मसुद्रौ पूर्वपश्चिमौ
It is immersed on both sides by the Masudra, to the east and west.
सर्वर्त्तुषु सुखश्चापि निषधः पर्वतो महान्
In all seasons, the great mountain Niṣadha is pleasant.
द्वात्रिंशच्च सहस्राणि विस्तीर्णः स च मूर्द्धनि
It stretches thirty-two thousand yojanas at its summit.
नानावर्णास्तु पार्श्वेषु प्रजापतिगुणान्वितः
Its sides are of various colors, endowed with the qualities of Prajāpati.
पूर्वतर्ः श्वेतवर्णश्च ब्राह्मणस्तस्य तेन तत्
Its eastern side is white, and a Brāhmaṇa dwells there because of this.
तेनास्य क्षत्त्रभावस्तु मेरोर्नानार्थकारणात्
Thus, its Kṣatriya nature arises from Meru, for various reasons.
भृङ्गपत्रनिभश्चापि पश्चिमेन समाचितः
On the west, it is covered like the wings of a bee.
वृत्तः स्वभावतः प्रोक्तो वर्णतः परिमाणतः
It is said to be circular by its own nature, in color and in measure.
मयुरबर्हवर्णस्तु शातकैंभश्च शृङ्गवान्
Its color is like a peacock's plume, and it is golden and crowned with peaks.
तेषामन्तरविष्कंभो नवसाहस्र उच्यते
Their inner diameter is said to be nine thousand.
नवैवं तु सहस्राणि विस्तीर्णं सर्वतस्तु तत्
Thus, on all sides, it is spread to nine thousand.
