मेधा तिथेस्तु पुत्रैस्तैः प्लक्षद्वीपेश्वरैर्नृबैः
By those sons of Medhātithi, the kings of Plakṣadvīpa—
प्लक्षद्वीपादिषु त्वेषु शाकद्वीपान्तिकेषु वै
In these, beginning with Plakṣadvīpa and near Śākadvīpa—
सुखमायुश्च रूपं च बलं धर्मश्च नित्यशः
Happiness, long life, beauty, strength, and righteousness are ever-present.
प्रक्षद्वीपः परिष्क्रान्तो जंबूद्वीपं निबोधत
Having described the Prakṣa continent, now listen about Jambūdvīpa.
प्रियव्रतो ऽभ्य षिञ्चत्तं जंबूद्वीपेश्वरं नृपम्
Priyavrata anointed him, the king of Jambūdvīpa.
ज्येष्ठो नाभिरिति ख्यातस्तस्य किंपुरुषो ऽनुजः
His eldest son, known as Nābhi, had a younger brother named Kiṃpuruṣa.
रम्यस्तु पञ्चमः पुत्रो हिरण्वान् षष्ठ उच्यते
Ramyaka was the fifth son, and Hiraṇvān is said to be the sixth.
नवमः केतुमालश्च तेषां देशान्निबोधत
Ketumāla was the ninth; now hear of their regions.
हेमकूटं तु यद्वर्षं ददौ किपुरुषाय तत्
The region called Hemakūṭa was given to Kiṃpuruṣa.
मध्यमं यत्सुमेरोस्तु ददौ स तदिलावृतम्
The central part of Sumeru was given to Ilāvṛta.
श्वेतं यदुत्तरं तस्मात्पित्रा दत्तं हिरण्वते
The northern Śveta region was given by the father to Hiraṇvān.
साल्यवन्तं तथा वर्षं भद्राश्वाय न्यवेदयत्
Likewise, the region called Śālyavanta was assigned to Bhadrāśva.
इत्येतानि मयोक्तानि नव वर्षाणि भागशः
Thus, I have described these nine regions, each in its division.
यथाक्रमं स धर्मात्मा ततस्तु तपसि स्थितः
In due order, that righteous one then remained engaged in austerity.
प्रियव्रतस्य पुत्रैस्तैः पौतैः स्वायंभुवस्य च
By the sons of Priyavrata, and by the grandsons of Svāyambhuva as well,
क्रियन्ते प्रलये वृत्ते सप्त सप्तसु पार्थिवैः
When dissolution occurs, the seven are ruled by seven kings.
यानि किंपुरुषाद्यानि वर्णाण्यष्टौ श्रुतानि तु
The eight classes beginning with Kiṃpuruṣa are indeed heard of.
विपर्ययो न तेष्वस्ति जरामृत्युभयं न च
They do not experience reversal, nor do they have old age or death.
न तेष्वस्ति युगावस्था क्षेत्रेष्वष्टासु सर्वशः
They do not have the divisions of ages in any of the eight regions.
नाभिस्त्वज नयत्पुत्रं मेरुदेव्यां महाद्युतिम्
Nābhi, of great splendor, was born to Merudevī as her son.
ऋषभाद्भरतो जज्ञे वीरः पुत्रशताग्रजः
From Ṛṣabha was born Bharata, the heroic eldest among a hundred sons.
हिमाह्वं दक्षिणं वर्षं भरताय न्यवेदयत्
He entrusted to Bharata the southern region called Himāhva.
भरतस्यात्मजो विद्वान्सुमतिर्नाम धार्मिकः
Bharata's son was Sumati by name, learned and righteous.
पुत्रसंक्रामितश्रीस्तु वनं राजा विवेश सः
Having transferred his royal glory to his son, the king entered the forest.
तेजसस्यात्मजो विद्वानिन्द्रद्युम्न इति स्मृतः
Tejasa's son was the learned Indradyumna, as he is known.
प्रतीहारः कुलं तस्य नाम्ना जज्ञे तदन्वयः
Pratīhāra was born in his lineage, and from him the family took its name.
उन्नेता प्रतिहर्तुस्तु भूमा तस्य सुतः स्मृतः
Unnetā was the son of Pratīharta, and Bhūmā is remembered as his son.
प्रस्तावेस्तु विभुः पुत्रः पृथुस्तस्य सुतो ऽभवत्
Prastāva's son was Vibhu, and Pṛthu was Vibhu's son.
गयस्यापि नरः पुत्रो नरस्यापि सुतो विराट्
Gaya's son was Nara, and Nara's son was Virāṭ.
धीमतश्च महान्पुत्रो महतश्चापि भौवनः
The wise Mahān was the son of Mahat, and Bhauvana was the son of Mahān.
