अस्त्रेण ब्रह्मशिरसा ज्वलत्पावकरोचिषा
With the Brahmaśiras weapon, blazing with fiery radiance,
विषङ्गं च महादैत्यं दण्डनाथा मदोद्धता
The intoxicated commander struck at Viṣaṅga, the great demon.
उद्यम्य बाहुना युद्धं चकाराशेषभीषणम्
Raising her arm, she waged a terrifying and unending battle.
चण्डाट्टहासमुखरौ परिभ्रमणकारिणौ
Their mouths resounded with fierce laughter as they whirled about.
अन्योन्यदण्डहननैर्मोहयन्तौ मुहुर्मुहुः
Again and again, they bewildered each other by striking with their staffs.
अयुध्येतां दुराधर्षौं दण्डिनीदैत्यशेखरौ
Those two, the formidable Daṇḍinī and the chief of the demons, fought, difficult to overcome.
संक्रुद्धा हन्तुमारेभे विषङ्गं दण्डनायिका
Enraged, Daṇḍanāyikā set out to slay Viṣaṅga.
कठोरं ताडनं चक्रे मुसलेनाथ पोत्रिणी
Potriṇī delivered a harsh blow with her mace.
चूर्णितेन शताङ्गेन समं भूतलमाश्रयत्
Crushed by the hundred-spoked weapon, he fell to the ground together with her.
तत्रैव तं निशा शेषं निन्यतुः शिबिरं प्रति
That very night, they brought him, the remnant, back to the camp.
विषङ्गस्य वधो युद्धे वर्णितो दण्डनाथया
The slaying of Viṣaṅga in battle by Daṇḍanāthā has been described.
सोदरस्यापदं दृष्ट्वा भण्डः किमकरोच्छुचा
Seeing his brother's misfortune, what did Bhaṇḍa do in his grief?
सहायाः के ऽभवंस्तस्य हतभ्रातृतनूभुवः
Who were the allies of Bhaṇḍa, the one whose brother was slain?
ललिताचरितं पुण्यमणिमादिगुमप्रदम्
The virtuous deeds of Lalitā, which bestow the qualities of the gods such as Aṇimā, are recounted.
सिद्धिदं सर्वपापघ्नं कीर्तिदं पञ्चपर्वसु
It bestows success, destroys all sins, and brings fame at the five junctures.
शोकेन महताविष्टो भण्डः प्रविललाप सः
Overwhelmed by great sorrow, Bhaṇḍa lamented.
न लेभे किञ्चिदाश्वासं भ्रातृव्यसनकर्शितः
Afflicted by the misfortune of his brothers, he found no comfort at all.
आश्वास्यामानः शोकेन युक्तः कोपमवाप सः
Though consoled, he, seized by grief, was overtaken by anger.
अङ्गारपाटलाक्षश्च निःश्वसन्कृष्णसर्पवत्
His eyes reddened like burning coals, he breathed heavily like a black serpent.
क्षिप्रं मुहुर्मुहुः स्पृष्ट्वा धुन्वानः करवालिकाम्
Again and again he struck and shook his clenched fist.
क्रोधहुङ्कारमातन्वन्गर्जन्नुत्पातमेघवत्
He uttered a roar of anger, thundering like a storm cloud of disaster.
भ्रातरो मम पुत्राश्च सेनानाथाः सहस्रशः
My brothers, my sons, and thousands of generals—
भ्रातृपुत्रमहाशोकवह्निं निर्वापयाम्यहम्
I will extinguish the great fire of grief for my brothers and sons.
इत्युक्त्वा कठिनं वर्म वज्रपातसहं महत्
So saying, he donned a mighty, hard armor, able to withstand a thunderbolt's strike.
उद्दाममौर्विनिःश्वासकठोरं भ्रामयन्धनुः
Whirling his formidable bow, fierce as the breath of a great serpent, he exhaled violently.
तालजङ्घादिकैः सार्द्धंपूर्वद्वारे निवेशिते
With Tāla-jaṅgha and others, he was stationed at the eastern gate.
पञ्चत्रिंशच्चमूनाथैः कुटिलाक्षपुरःसरैः
With thirty-five army commanders, led by those with crooked eyes,
मिलितेन च भण्डेन चत्वारिंशच्चमूवराः
And with Bhaṇḍa joined by forty great divisions of troops,
द्विसहस्राक्षौहिणीनां पञ्चाशीतिः परार्धिका
Eighty-five supreme divisions, each of two thousand units,
भण्डासुरे विनिर्याते सर्वसैनिकसंकुले
When Bhaṇḍāsura set out, the entire army was in tumult.
