प्रपिबन्त्यः पिपासार्तैर्मुखैः शक्तय उत्थिताः
The energies arose, their mouths parched with thirst, eagerly drinking.
तथा सैन्यस्य परितो महाप्राकारमण्डलम्
In the same way, around the army, there was a great circle of ramparts.
चकार विस्मयकरी कदंबवनवासिनी
The dweller of the Kadamba forest performed a wondrous act.
अथ ताः शक्तयो भूरि पिबन्ति स्म रणान्तरे
Then, in the midst of battle, those energies drank deeply and abundantly.
यस्या यस्या मनःप्रीती रुचिः स्वादो यथायथा
Each one, according to her own delight, taste, and pleasure, as she wished.
संततं मध्यधाराभिः प्रववर्ष सुरांबुधिः
Constant streams poured forth from the ocean of liquor.
हैताली लाङ्गलेया च तालजातास्तथा सुराः
There were liquors called Haitālī, Lāṅgaleyā, and those made from palm trees.
सुस्वादुसौरभाद्याश्च शुभगन्धसुखप्रदाः
And others, delicious and fragrant, bestowing pleasant scent and delight.
कटुकाश्च कषायाश्च मधुरास्तिक्ततास्पृशः
Some were pungent, astringent, sweet, and touched with bitterness.
ईषदम्लाश्च कट्वम्ला मधुराम्लास्तथा पराः
Some were slightly sour, some sharp-sour, and others sweet-sour in taste.
रणभ्रमहरा शीता लघ्व्यस्तद्वत्कवोष्ठकाः
Cool, light, and invigorating, dispelling the fatigue of battle, as were the Kavoṣṭhaka liquors.
नानाविधाः सुराधारा ववर्ष मदिरार्णवः
The ocean of liquor rained down streams of many kinds of intoxicating drinks.
ऐरावतकर प्रख्यां सुराधारां मुदा पपौ
With joy, she drank a stream of liquor resembling the trunk of Airāvata.
शक्तयः प्रपपुः सीधु मुदा मीलितलोचनाः
The energies, their eyes closing in delight, drank the wine with pleasure.
आगतस्तर्पयित्वा तु दिव्यरूपं समास्थितः
Having come and satisfied them, he assumed a divine form.
स्निग्धगंभीरघोषेण वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ताम्
With a gentle, deep voice, he spoke these words to her.
मया संतर्पिता मुग्धरूपा शक्तिवरूथिनी
By me, the beautiful, enchanting host of energies has been satisfied.
नृत्यन्तीनां पुरः काश्चित्करतालं वितन्वते
Some among those dancing began to clap their hands before them.
पतन्त्यन्योन्यमङ्गेषु काश्चिदानन्दमन्थराः
Some, slowed by delight, fall upon one another’s bodies.
काश्चिदुत्थाय संनद्धा घूर्णयन्ति निरायुधाः
Others rise up, fully armed, and whirl about though unarmed.
अवलोक्य भृशं तुष्टा दण्डिनी तमुवाच ह
Seeing this, the staff-bearing woman became greatly pleased and spoke to him.
देवकार्यमिद किञ्च निर्विघ्नितमिदं कृतम्
This is the work of the gods; it has been accomplished without hindrance.
सोमपानवदत्यन्तमुपयोज्यो भविष्यसि
You shall be employed just like the drinker of Soma, to the utmost degree.
यागेषु मन्त्रपूतेन पीतेन भवता जनाः
In sacrifices, people will drink you, purified by mantra.
दत्तात्रेयो विधिर्विष्णुस्त्वां पास्यन्ति महाजनाः
Dattatreya, the Creator, and Vishnu—great people will drink you.
यागे समर्चितस्त्वं तु सर्वसिद्धिं प्रदास्यसि
When worshipped in sacrifice, you will grant all accomplishments.
इत्थं वरप्रदानेन तोषयित्वा सुरांबुधिम्
Thus, by granting boons and pleasing the ocean of gods,
पुनः प्रववृते युद्धं शक्तीनां दानवैः सह
Again, battle commenced between the powers and the demons.
शक्तयो दैत्यचक्रेषु न्यपतन्नेकहेलया
The powers fell upon the circles of demons with effortless ease.
मदरागेण चक्षूंषि दैत्यरक्तेन शस्त्रिका
With eyes intoxicated by passion, the weapon-bearers were stained with the blood of demons.
