गीतिबन्धेनामरीभिर्बह्वीभिर्गीतवैभवा
With many celestial women, their songs formed intricate melodies, displaying musical splendor.
कर्षती कल्पविश्लेषनिर्मर्यादाब्धिसंनिभम्
They drew forth a sound as vast as the ocean, breaking all boundaries of imagination.
काश्चिद्दाडिमसंकाशाः काश्चिज्जीमूतरोचिषः
Some shone like pomegranates, others gleamed with the radiance of lightning.
काचाद्रिकाम्बराः काश्चित्पराः श्यामलकोमलाः
Some wore garments like mountain crystals, others were dark and tender in form.
विरुद्धैः पञ्चभिर्बाणैर्मिश्रितैः शतकोटिभिः
With five kinds of hostile arrows, mingled with hundreds of crores,
असंख्याः शक्तयश्चेलुर्दण्डिन्यास्सैनिके तथा
Countless powers moved among the soldiers of Daṇḍin likewise.
यथा भूषणवेषादि यथा प्रभावलक्षणम्
Just as in ornament, attire, and other marks of splendor,
यथा दैत्यौघसंहारो यथा सर्वैश्च पूजिता
Just as in the destruction of hosts of demons, and as honored by all,
महाराज्ञीवितीर्णं तदाज्ञामुद्राङ्गुलीयकम्
That royal command, the signet ring of the great queen, was delivered.
तद्भारभङ्गुरा भूमिर्देलालीलामलंबत
The earth, burdened by that weight, trembled and swayed in sport.
उद्धूतधूलिजंबालीभूतसप्तार्णवीजलम्
The waters of the seven oceans became like dust clouds, tossed up.
आधोरणैर्हस्तिपकाः खड्गैः पद्गाश्च सङ्गताः
With banners below, the elephant troops, sword-bearers, and infantry assembled.
विशुक्रेण समं श्यामा विकृष्टमणिकार्मुका
Śyāmā, together with Viśukra, drew her jewel-studded bow.
सम्पदीशाच जग्राह पुरुषेण युयुत्सया
She seized the lord of wealth, with a man eager for battle.
कुन्तिषेणेन समरं महामाया तदाकरोत्
The great Māyā then engaged in battle with Kuntiṣeṇa.
लघुश्यामा चकारोच्चैः कुशूरेण समं रणम्
Laghuśyāmā loudly fought in the battle, together with Kuśūra.
वाग्वादिनी तु जघटे द्रुघणेन समं रणे
Vāgvādinī contended in battle with Drughaṇa.
महान्तं समरे चक्रुरन्योन्यं क्रोधमूर्छिताः
In the battle, they, overcome by wrath, made each other mighty.
वर्धमानां शक्तिचमूं हीयमानां निजां चमूम्
As the army of Śakti grew, her own force diminished.
शक्तिसैन्ये समस्ते ऽपि तृषास्त्रं प्रमुमोच ह
Then, in the midst of the entire army of Śakti, she released the weapon of thirst.
विशुक्रमुक्ततर्षास्त्रव्याकुलाः शक्तयो ऽवन्
Stricken by the weapon of thirst unleashed by Viśukra, the Śaktis became distressed.
रूक्षयन्कर्णकुहरमङ्गदौर्वल्यमाहवन्
They suffered dryness, weakness in the ear passages, and exhaustion in the battle.
आविर्बभूव शक्तीनामतितीव्रस्तृषाज्वरः
An exceedingly intense fever of thirst arose among the Śaktis.
मन्त्रिणी सह पोत्रिण्या भृशं चिन्तामवाप ह
The queen, together with the charioteer’s wife, fell into deep anxiety.
सखि पोत्रिणि दुष्टस्य तर्षास्त्रमिदमागतम्
Friend, O charioteer’s wife, this affliction of thirst has come upon the wicked one.
शक्तीनां मण्डलेनात्र समरे समुपेक्षितम्
In this battle, the circle of Śaktis has been neglected.
विशुष्कतालुमूलत्वा द्वक्तुमप्यालि न क्षमाः
Their throats were so parched that they were unable even to speak.
कृता चापकृतिर्दैत्यैरुपायः प्रविचिन्त्यताम्
A wrong has been done by the Daityas; let a means be considered.
एकापि शक्तिर्नैवास्ति या तर्षेण न पीडिता
There is not even one Śakti who is not afflicted by thirst.
रन्ध्रप्रहारिणो हन्त बाणैर्निघ्नन्ति दानवाः
Alas, the Dānavas strike through gaps, killing with arrows.
