तस्माद्वै सर्वथा रुद्रस्तद्विद्वद्भिरभीज्यते
Therefore, Rudra is always to be worshipped by the wise in this way.
भावनः सर्वभूतानां सर्वात्मा नीललोहितः
He is the originator of all beings, the soul of all, the blue-red one.
प्रजापतिमुखैर्देवैः सम्यगिष्टफलार्थिभिः
By the gods headed by Prajapati, who seek the proper fruits of sacrifice,
इज्यते भगवान् यस्मात्तस्मार्त्र्यंबक उच्यते
the blessed Lord is worshipped; therefore, he is called Tryambaka.
त्र्यंबका नामतः प्रेम्णा योनयस्ता वनस्पतेः
The sources of the sacred Kuṣa grass, called Tryambaka out of love,
त्रिसाधनः पुरोडाशस्त्रिकपालः स वै स्मृतः
He is known as trisādhana, the cake of three parts, and the three-skulled one.
इत्येतत्पञ्चवर्षं हि युगं प्रोक्तं मनीषिभिः
Thus, this five-year period is declared by the wise to be a yuga.
सैकः षट्को विजज्ञे ऽथ मध्वादिऋतुसंज्ञकः
Then, a single group of six arose, known as the season of honey and so on.
नदीवेग इवासक्तः कालो धावति संहरन्
Time rushes on, gathering up everything, like the current of a river.
बहुत्वात्परिसंख्यातुं पुत्र पौत्रमनन्तकम्
Because of their multitude, it is impossible to count the endless sons and grandsons.
कीर्त्तयन्पुण्यकीर्त्तीनां महतीं सिद्धिमाप्नुयात्
By praising those of virtuous fame, one attains great accomplishment.
तुल्याभिमानिनः सर्वे जायन्ते नामरूपतः
All are born with equal pride, each with their own name and form.
ऋषयो मनवश्चैव सर्वे तुल्यप्रयोजनाः
The seers and Manus too, all have similar purposes.
विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च कीर्त्य मानं निबोधत
Now hear in detail and order the measure of their fame.
यैरियं पृथिवी सर्वा सप्तद्वीपा सपत्तना
By whom this entire earth, with its seven continents and cities, is possessed.
स्वायंभुवेंऽतरे पूर्वमाद्ये त्रेतायुगे तथा
In the interval of Svāyambhuva, formerly, and likewise in the first Tretā Yuga.
प्रजा सत्त्वतपोयुक्तैस्तैरियं विनिवेशिता
The people were established by those endowed with goodness and austerity.
कन्या सा तु महाभाग कर्दमस्य प्रजा पतेः
That blessed maiden became the daughter of Kardama, the lord of creatures.
तयोर्वै भ्रातरः शूराः प्रजापतिसमा दश
From them were born ten heroic brothers, equal to Prajāpati.
ज्योतिष्मान् द्युतिमान्हव्यः सवनः सभ्र एव च
Jyotiṣmān, Dyutimān, Havya, Savana, and Sābhra as well.
द्वीपेषु तेषु धर्मेण द्वीपान्ताश्च निबोधत
On those islands, by righteousness, and the boundaries of the islands—listen.
प्लक्षद्वीपेश्वरश्चापि तेन मेधातिथिः कृतः
There, Medhātithi was made lord of Plakṣa Island.
ज्योतिष्मन्तं कुशद्वीपे राजानं कृतवान्प्रभुः
The lord appointed Jyotiṣmān as king of Kuśa Island.
शाकद्वीपेश्वरं चापि हव्यं चक्रे प्रियव्रतः
Priyavrata made Havya the lord of Śāka Island.
पुष्करे सवनस्याथ महावीतः सुतो ऽभवत्
On Puṣkara, Savanā's son Mahāvīta was born.
महावीतं स्मृतं वर्षं तस्य नाम्ना महात्मनः
That region is remembered as Mahāvīta, after the name of that great soul.
हव्यो व्यजनयत्पुत्राञ् शाकद्वीपेश्वराञ् प्रभुः
Havya, the lord of Śāka Island, begot sons.
कुसुमोत्तरमोदाकौ सप्तमं च महाद्रुगम्
Kusumottara, Modāka, and the seventh, Mahādruga.
कुमारस्य तु कौमारं द्वितीयं परिकीर्तितम्
Of Kumāra, Kaumāra is said to be the second.
मणीवस्य चतुर्थं तु मणीवकमिहोच्यते
Of Maṇīva, the fourth is called Maṇīvaka here.
