बलाहकमुखान्सप्त सेनानाथान्मदोत्कटान्
The seven intoxicated generals, headed by Balāhaka,
अन्यः फालमुखश्चैव विकर्णो विकटाननः
along with Phālamukha, Vikarṇa, and Vikaṭānana,
भण्डासुरं नमस्कृत्य युद्धकौतूहलोल्वणाः
Eager for the excitement of battle, they bowed to Bhaṇḍāsura.
अन्योन्यसुसहायाश्च निर्जगमुर्नगरान्तरात्
Supporting each other, they marched out from within the city.
उल्लिखन्ति केतुजालैरंबरे घनमण्डलम्
They scratched the dense mass of clouds in the sky with nets of banners.
पिबन्ति धूलिकाजालैरशेषानपि सागरान्
They drank up even the oceans with nets of dust.
नभोगुणमयं विश्वमादधानाः पदेपदे
At every step, they encompassed the universe woven of the threads of the sky.
प्रवेष्टुमिव विश्वस्मिन्कैकसेयाः प्रतस्थिरे
As if to enter the whole universe, the Kaikaseyas set forth.
उद्दीप्तशस्त्रभरणाश्चेलुर्द्दीप्तोर्ध्वकेशिनः
They advanced, their weapons blazing, their hair upright and flaming.
भण्डासुरेण महता जगद्विजयकारिणा
By the great Bhaṇḍāsura, who sought to conquer the worlds,
प्रोषिता ललितासैन्यं जेतुकामेन दुर्धिया
Driven out, with evil intent, desiring to defeat Lalita’s army,
शक्तिसेनामभिमुखं सक्रोधमभिदुद्रुवुः
They rushed furiously toward the army of Śakti.
देव्यास्तु सैनिकं यत्र तत्र ते जगमुरुद्धताः
Wherever the goddess’s soldiers were, there they went, reckless.
अभ्यमित्रीणमभवद्बद्धभ्रुकुटिनिष्ठुरम्
Against their enemies, their faces were harsh, brows furrowed in anger.
मुद्गरिण्यः पट्टिशिन्यः कोदण्डिन्यस्तथापराः
Some bore maces, others spears, and still others bows.
पिबन्त्य इव दैत्याब्धिं सान्निपेतुः सहस्रशः
As if drinking the ocean of demons, they gathered by the thousands.
मायापरिग्रहैर्दूरं मोहयन्त्यो जडाशयान्
With magical illusions, they bewildered the dull-minded from afar.
इति शक्तीर्भर्त्सयन्तो दानवाश्चक्रुराहवम्
Thus, rebuking the Śaktis, the Dānavas engaged in battle.
तद्गलोद्गलितो रक्तपूर ऊर्ध्वमुखो ऽभवत्
From that, a flood of blood gushed upward.
तैरेव प्रेतनाथस्य च्छत्रच्छविरुदञ्चिता
By those very ones, the parasol of the lord of the dead was raised up.
लूनतच्छक्तिनैकेन बाणेन व्यलुनीत च
With a single severed spear, and by an arrow, it was cut down.
उरःस्थले स्वकरिणा वप्राघातमशिक्षयत्
On the chest of his own elephant, he inflicted a blow with his rampart.
खड्गेन सहसा हत्वा गजस्य स्वप्रियं व्यधात्
With his sword, he swiftly slew the elephant's beloved.
धनुर्दण्डं द्विधा कृत्वा स्वभ्रुवोः प्रतिमां तनेत्
Breaking his bow-staff in two, he fashioned an image of his own eyebrows.
कृपाणपद्मा रोमाल्यां स्वकीयायां मुदं व्यधात्
He took delight in his own sword-lotus garland.
रथ्यक्रनितंबस्य स्वस्य तेनातनोन्मुदम्
He rejoiced in the sound of his own armor clattering on the street.
खड्गेन छिन्दती स्वस्य प्रियमुव्यास्ततान ह
Cutting with his sword, he spread joy to his beloved.
प्रविवेश च दैत्यानां सेना शक्तिबलान्तरम्
He entered the army of the Daityas, which possessed various powers and strengths.
संकुलाकारतां प्राप्तो युद्धकाले ऽभवत्तदा
At that time, during the battle, it became a scene of utter confusion.
दैत्यानां करिणो मत्ता महाक्रोडा इवाभवन्
The Daityas' elephants, intoxicated, became like great boars.
