सूक्ष्मरूपा विशन्तिस्म नानारन्ध्राणि बभ्रवः
The brown serpents, in subtle forms, entered various crevices.
निजसैन्यानि दीनानि करङ्कः कोपमास्थितः
Karaṅka, filled with rage, saw his own troops disheartened.
अन्ये ऽपि च चमूनाथा लघुहस्ता महाबलाः
Other commanders of the armies, swift-handed and mighty, too—
बभ्रूणां दन्तकोटीषु कठोरघट्टनं व्यधुः
They struck fiercely against the hard tips of the brown serpents’ fangs.
पञ्चापि ते चमूनाथविसृष्टैरेकहेलया
Even those five commanders, dispatched by the brown serpents, with a single gesture—
विशीर्णगात्रा नकुला नकुलीं पर्यवारयन्
The wounded mongooses surrounded the female mongoose.
नकुलानां परावृत्त्या महान्तं रोषमाश्रिता
With the retreat of the mongooses, the female mongoose was seized by great wrath.
वह्निज्वालापरीताग्रं संदधे शार्ङ्गधन्वनि
She set her arrow, its tip wreathed in fire-flames, upon the Śārṅga bow.
वज्राङ्गा वज्रलोमानो वज्रदंष्ट्रा महाजवा
With bodies like thunderbolts, thunderbolt-haired, thunderbolt-fanged, and of great speed—
वज्राकारैर्नशैस्तूर्ण दारयन्तो महीतलम्
With thunderbolt-like blows, they swiftly tore the earth apart.
वज्रसंपातसदृशा नासाचीत्कार कारिणः
They produced sounds from their nostrils like the crash of thunderbolts.
पराक्रमं बहुविधं तेनिरे ते निरेनसः
Those sinless ones displayed many kinds of valor.
विनष्टाः प्रत्यवयवं विनेशुर्दानवाधमाः
The vile Dānavas were destroyed, perishing limb by limb.
एवं वज्रमयैर्बभुमण्डलैः शण्डिते बले
Thus, with circles of thunderbolt-bodied beings devastating the army—
संग्राममधिकं तेनुः समाकृष्टशरासनाः
They engaged in an even fiercer battle, drawing their bows fully.
पट्टिशेन करङ्कस्य चिच्छेद कठिनं शिरः
With a sword, she cut off the hard head of Karaṅka.
उत्पत्योत्पत्य तार्क्ष्येण व्यलुनादसिना शिरः
Again and again, Tārkṣya swiftly severed the head with his sharp sword.
तादृशं लाघवं दृष्ट्वा नकुल्या श्यामलांबिका
Seeing such agility, Nakulī, the dark-complexioned Ambikā, was amazed.
निजाङ्गदेवतत्त्वं च तस्यै श्यामांबिका ददौ
Śyāmāmbikā then bestowed upon her the true knowledge of her own divine essence.
हतशिष्टा भीतभीता नकुलीशरणं गताः
The survivors, terrified and trembling, sought refuge with Nakulī.
भवद्राज्ञे रणोदन्तमशेषं च निबोधत
Now listen in full to the account of the battle as it was reported to King Bhavadrāja.
मुदितास्ते पुनर्भीत्या शून्यकायां पलायिताः
Though joyful, out of fear, they fled from the empty battlefield.
तदुदन्तं ततः श्रुत्वा भण्डश्चण्डो रुषाभवत्
Hearing of this event, Bhaṇḍa became furious with rage.
कुजलाशमिति प्रोचे युयुत्साव्याकुलाशयः
With his mind agitated by the desire for battle, he declared, 'Summon Kujalāśa!'
करङ्काद्यश्चमूनाथाः कन्दलद्भुजविक्रमाः
The commanders of the armies, like Karaṅka and others, whose arms displayed great prowess,
पापीयस्या तया गूढमायया विनिपातिताः
were secretly destroyed by her, the more wicked one, through her hidden magic.
तानुदग्रभुजासत्त्वान्प्राहिणु प्रधनं प्रति
He dispatched those with strong arms and valor to the forefront of battle.
ते मर्दयित्वा ललितासैन्यं मायापरायणाः
They, devoted to magic, crushed Lalitā's army.
कीकसगर्भसंजातास्ते प्रचण्डपराक्रमाः
Born from the womb of Kīkasā, they were of fierce might.
तेषामवश्यं विजयो भविष्यति रणाङ्गणे
Victory in the field of battle was certain for them.
