अथ वज्रमुखश्चैव चक्रिवन्तं महत्तरम्
Then Vajramukha, too, with a great discus,
वज्रदन्ताभिधानो ऽन्यश्चमूनामधिपो बली
and another, named Vajradanta, a powerful leader of the army,
तैः सेनापतिभिर्दुष्टैः प्रोत्साहितमथाहवे
By those wicked generals, the battle was fiercely incited.
सर्पिणी च दुराचारा बहुमायापरिग्रहा
And Sarpiṇī, of evil conduct and possessing many illusions,
तथा विकलितं सैन्यमवलोक्य रुषाकुला
Seeing her army thus thrown into disorder, she was filled with wrath.
प्रतप्तकनकप्रख्या ललितातालुसम्भवा
Born from Lalitā's palate, shining like molten gold,
सर्पिण्यभिमुखं तत्र विससर्ज निजं बलम्
she then sent forth her own force against Sarpiṇī.
गरुडः प्राचलद्युद्धे सुमेरुरिव जङ्गमः
Garuda moved into battle like Mount Sumeru set in motion.
क्रोधरक्तेक्षणं व्यात्तं नकुली विदधे मुखम्
With eyes reddened by anger, the mongoose opened its mouth wide.
द्वात्रिंशत्कोटयो जाता नकुलाः कनकप्रभाः
Thirty-two crores of mongooses, shining like gold, were born.
व्यभ्रमन्समरे घोरे विषघ्नाः स्वर्णबभ्रवः
In the fierce battle, the golden brown mongoose, destroyers of poison, moved about.
उत्फुल्ला नकुला व्यात्तवदना व्यदशन्नहीन्
The mongooses, with mouths wide open and fully expanded, bit relentlessly.
तीक्ष्णदन्तनिपातेन खण्डयामास विग्रहम्
With the force of their sharp teeth, they shattered the forms.
लिहन्तो नकुला जिह्वापल्लवैः पुप्लुवुर्मृधे
The mongooses, licking with their tender tongues, leapt into the fray.
मुहुः कुण्डलितैर्भोगैः पन्नगानां व्यचेष्टत
Again and again, the serpents writhed with their coiled bodies.
फणाभरसमुत्कीर्णा मणयो व्यरुचन्रणे
Jewels, scattered from the weight of their hoods, shone brightly in the battle.
फणयस्तन्महाद्रोहवह्विज्वाला इवाबभुः
The hoods, bearing great treachery, appeared like blazing flames.
मायामये सर्पजाले सर्पिणी कोपमादधे
Within the magical net of serpents, the serpent-woman grew furious.
गारुडास्त्रमतिक्रूरं समाधत्त शिलीमुखे
She employed the exceedingly cruel Garuda weapon against the mongoose.
प्रविश्य सर्पिणीदेहं सर्पमायां व्यशोषयत्
Entering the body of the serpent-woman, the Garuda weapon dried up the serpent magic.
क्रोधं च तद्विनाशेन प्राप्ताः पञ्च चमूवराः
With her destruction, five commanders of the army were seized by wrath.
सा सर्पिणी कथाशेषं नीता नकुलवीर्यतः
That serpent-woman, her story ended, was subdued by the valor of the mongoose.
एकोद्यमेन शस्त्रौघैर्नकुलीं तामवाकिरन्
With single-minded effort, they showered the mongoose with volleys of weapons.
लघुहस्ततया युद्धे चक्रे वै शस्त्रवर्षिणी
With swift hands in battle, she unleashed a rain of weapons.
वज्रसारमयैर्दन्तैर्व्यदशन्मर्म सीमसु
With teeth made of adamant, she bit into the vital points and boundaries.
उदग्रदंशनकुलैर्नकुलैराकुलीकृताः
The mongooses, biting fiercely, caused confusion among the mongooses.
देशन्तस्तद्द्विषां सैन्य सकुलाः प्रज्वलक्रुधः
In the midst of the enemy forces, the army of mongooses, blazing with wrath, spread out.
पृष्ठतो प्यदशन्केचिदा गत्य व्याकृतक्रियाः
Some, from behind, bit with swift movement, their actions clearly displayed.
नकुलैरभिभूतास्ते न्यपतन्नमरद्रुहः
Overpowered by the mongooses, those immortal trees fell down.
भोगिभोगानि वाकृष्य व्यदशन्रसनातलम्
The serpents, having seized the coils of other serpents, bit into their tongues.
