अश्वारोहा गजारोहा गर्दभारोहिणः परे
Some rode horses, some elephants, others donkeys.
काकादिरोहिणो गृध्रारोहाः कङ्कादिरोहिणः
Others rode crows, vultures, and cranes.
शरभारोहिणश्चान्ये भेरुण्डारोहिणः परे
Some rode sharabhas, others rode bheruṇḍas.
एवं नानाविधैर्वाहवाहिनो ललितां प्रति
Thus, with various mounts, they advanced against Lalitā.
दशाक्षौहिणिकायुक्तं प्राहिणोल्ललितां प्रति
He sent forth a force of ten divisions against Lalitā.
भटैर्युक्तः स सेनानी ललिताभिमुखे ययौ
The commander, accompanied by warriors, marched toward Lalitā.
अट्टहासान्वितन्वानो दुर्मदस्तन्मुखो ययौ
With a face filled with wild laughter, intoxicated by arrogance, he advanced.
रक्षणार्थं दशाक्षौ हिण्युपेतं तालजङ्घकम्
For the purpose of protection, he appointed Tāla-jaṅgha, endowed with ten divisions of troops.
नाम्ना तालभुजं दैत्यं रक्षणार्थमकल्पयत्
He assigned the demon named Tāla-bhuja for the purpose of guarding.
तालग्रीवं नाम दैत्यं रक्षार्थं समकल्पयत्
He likewise appointed the demon named Tāla-grīva for protection.
आदिदेश स रक्षार्थं दशाक्षौहिणिकायुतम्
He commanded, for the sake of defense, a force of ten divisions.
मण्डलाकारतो वस्तुन्दशाक्षौहिणिमादिशत्
He ordered that the ten divisions be arranged in a circular formation.
शून्यकस्य पुरस्यैव तद्वृत्तं स्वामिने ऽवदत्
He reported the events of the city of Śūnyaka to his master.
दुर्मदः प्रेषितः पूर्वं दुष्टां तां ललितां प्रति
Durmada was previously sent against that wicked Lalitā.
तथापि राज्ञामाचारः कर्त्तव्यं पुररक्षणम्
Nevertheless, the king's duty is to ensure the protection of the city.
स्वसैन्यं सज्जयामास सेनापतिभिरन्वितः
He made his own army ready, accompanied by generals.
स ध्वनन्ध्वजिनीयुक्तो ललितासैन्य मावृणोत्
With a resounding army and banners, he surrounded Lalitā's forces.
दोधूयमानैरसिभिर्निपेतुः शक्तिसैनिकैः
Struck by whirling swords, the warriors with spears fell down.
देदीप्यमानशस्त्राभाः समयुध्यन्त दानवैः
With weapons blazing like fire, they fought with the demons.
समवर्तत संग्रामो धूलिग्रामतताम्बरः
The battle commenced, its sky covered with a mass of dust.
अश्वनिःश्वासविक्षिप्ता धूलयः रवं प्रपेदिरे
Dust, stirred up by the snorting of horses, resounded loudly.
संपत्सरस्वती क्रोधादभिदुद्राव संगरे
Sarasvatī, seized by anger, rushed forward into the battle.
अश्वाश्च दन्तिनो मत्ता व्यमर्दन्दानत्रीं चमुम्
Mad horses and elephants crushed the enemy army.
धूलीषु धूयमानासु ताड्यमानासु भेरिषु
As the dust was being stirred and the drums were being beaten.
शक्तिभिः पात्यमानानां दानवानां सहस्रशः
As the demons were struck down by the spears, they fell by the thousands.
विस्रस्ततत्तच्छिह्नानि समं छत्रकदम्बकैः
Their distinctive marks scattered, mingled with the clusters of broken parasols.
आलंबि तुलना संध्यारक्ताभ्रहिमरोचिषा
The ground was stained red, like the glow of evening sunlight on a mass of dark clouds.
दैत्यसैन्यानि निवहाः शक्तीनां पर्यवारयन्
The hosts of demon armies surrounded the spears on all sides.
दानवानां रणतले निपेतुर्मुण्डराशयः
On the battlefield, heaps of demon heads fell to the ground.
मुण्डैरखण्डमभवत्संग्रामधरणीतलम्
The earth of the battlefield became covered entirely with severed heads.
