दुर्गाणि संगृहाण त्वं कुरुक्षेपणिकाशतम्
Gather the fortresses; arrange a hundred divisions for attack.
सज्जीकुरु त्वं शस्त्राणि युद्धमेतदुपस्थितम्
Ready the weapons; this battle is at hand.
अनेकबलसंघातसहितं घोरदर्शनम्
With many groups of forces assembled, terrifying to behold—
केशेष्वाकृष्य तां मूढां देवसत्त्वे न दर्पिताम्
Seizing that deluded one by the hair, who was not proud among the divine beings—
कुटिलाक्षं महासत्त्वं स्वयं चान्तः पुरं ययौ
With crooked eyes, of great strength, he himself entered the inner city.
अश्रूयन्त च दैत्येन्द्रैरतिकर्णज्वरावहाः
And from the lords of the Daityas were heard sounds causing agony to the ears.
उच्चचालसुरेन्द्राणां योद्धतो दुन्दुभिध्वनिः
The sound of war drums, as the lords of the gods prepared to fight, resounded.
बधिरीकृतलोकेन चकम्पे जगतां त्रयी
The three worlds trembled, deafened by the noise that filled all beings.
पुप्रोथे गगनाभोगे दैत्य निःसाणनिस्वनः
In the expanse of the sky, the demon raised a thunderous battle cry.
विरसं विररासोच्चैर्विबुधद्वेषिझल्लरी
He uttered a harsh, loud shout, hateful to the gods.
समनह्यन्त संक्रुद्धाः प्रति तां परमेश्वरीम्
Enraged, they assembled together against the supreme goddess.
चकाशे जङ्गम इव प्रोत्तुङ्गो रोहणाचलः
Rohaṇa mountain appeared, towering and moving as if alive.
अधुनीत भटः कश्चिदतिधौतां कृपाणिकाम्
A certain warrior brandished a thoroughly polished sword.
आरूढतुरगो वीथ्यां चारिभेदं चकार ह
Mounted on a horse, he broke through the ranks along the road.
उत्पात वातसंपातप्रेरितानिव पर्वतान्
Driven by ominous winds, mountains seemed to be hurled forth.
द्रुहणैश्च भुशुण्डीभिः कुठारैर्मुसलैरपि
With clubs, slings, axes, and pestles, they attacked.
अर्धचक्रैर्महाचक्रैर्वक्राङ्गैरुरगाननैः
With half-wheels, great wheels, twisted limbs, and serpent jaws.
दण्डैः क्षेपणिकाशस्त्रैर्वज्रबाणैर्दृषद्वरैः
With staffs, throwing weapons, thunderbolt arrows, and stones.
कटारैः कोणमध्यैश्च फणिदन्तैः परःशतैः
With sharp-edged weapons, angular blades, and countless serpent fangs.
एवमादिभिरत्युग्रैरायुधैर्जीवहारिभिः
With such fierce, life-taking weapons and others of that kind.
अश्वारोहा गजारोहा गर्दभारोहिणः परे
Some rode horses, some elephants, others donkeys.
काकादिरोहिणो गृध्रारोहाः कङ्कादिरोहिणः
Others rode crows, vultures, and cranes.
शरभारोहिणश्चान्ये भेरुण्डारोहिणः परे
Some rode sharabhas, others rode bheruṇḍas.
एवं नानाविधैर्वाहवाहिनो ललितां प्रति
Thus, with various mounts, they advanced against Lalitā.
दशाक्षौहिणिकायुक्तं प्राहिणोल्ललितां प्रति
He sent forth a force of ten divisions against Lalitā.
भटैर्युक्तः स सेनानी ललिताभिमुखे ययौ
The commander, accompanied by warriors, marched toward Lalitā.
अट्टहासान्वितन्वानो दुर्मदस्तन्मुखो ययौ
With a face filled with wild laughter, intoxicated by arrogance, he advanced.
रक्षणार्थं दशाक्षौ हिण्युपेतं तालजङ्घकम्
For the purpose of protection, he appointed Tāla-jaṅgha, endowed with ten divisions of troops.
नाम्ना तालभुजं दैत्यं रक्षणार्थमकल्पयत्
He assigned the demon named Tāla-bhuja for the purpose of guarding.
तालग्रीवं नाम दैत्यं रक्षार्थं समकल्पयत्
He likewise appointed the demon named Tāla-grīva for protection.
