वातायनेषु कक्ष्यासु धिष्ण्येषु च खलेषु च
In the windows, in the rooms, in the platforms, and in the pits,
अश्रूयन्त महाघोषाः परुषा भूतभाषिताः
There were heard great clamors, harsh utterances spoken by spirits.
आराविषु करोटीनां कोटयश्चापतन्भुवि
In the shrines, skulls fell to the ground in heaps.
केशौघकाश्च निष्पेतुः सर्वतो धूमधूसराः
Masses of hair emerged everywhere, gray with smoke and dust.
निवेदयामासुरमी भण्डाय प्रथितौजसे
They reported these things to Bhaṇḍa, renowned for his power.
असंजातधृतिभ्रंशो मन्त्र स्थानमुपागमत्
With his composure unsettled and resolve shaken, he approached the place of mantras.
अध्यासामास दैत्येन्द्रः सिंहासनमनुत्तमम्
The lord of the Daityas took his seat upon the incomparable throne.
दीपयन्नखिलाशान्तानद्युतद्दानवेश्वरः
The lord of the Dānavas, radiant, dispelled all unrest.
तुङ्गसिंहासनस्थं तं सिषेवाते तदानुजै
His followers served him as he sat upon the lofty lion throne.
त्रैलोक्यकण्टकीभूतभुजदण्डभयङ्करौ
His arms, terrifying, had become the thorns of the three worlds.
त्रैलोक्यविजये लब्धं वर्धयन्तौ महद्यशः
Having gained victory over the three worlds, they increased their great fame.
कृतां जरिप्रणामौ च समुपाविशता भुवि
Having made their respectful salutations, they sat down upon the earth.
सर्वे सामन्तदैत्येन्द्रास्तं द्रष्टुं समुपागताः
All the vassal Daitya lords came together to see him.
स्वंस्वं नाम समुच्चार्य प्रणेमुर्भण्डकेश्वरम्
Each pronounced his own name and bowed to Bhaṇḍa, lord of the hair.
संभावयन्समालोकैः कियन्तं चित्क्षणं स्थितः
They honored him with attentive glances, remaining for a brief moment.
मथ्यमानमहासिंधुसमानार्गलनिस्वनः
The sound was like the roaring of a great ocean being churned.
पापिनः पामराचारा दुरात्मानः सुराधमाः
Wicked ones, of base conduct, evil-minded, the lowest among the gods—
ज्वलज्ज्वालाकुले वह्नौ पतित्वा नाशमागताः
Having fallen into the blazing, flame-filled fire, they met their destruction.
स्वयमेव किलास्राक्षुस्तां देवा वासवादयः
Indeed, the gods themselves, led by Indra, created that (being).
बहुस्त्रीपरिवाराश्च विविधायुधमण्डिताः
Surrounded by many women and adorned with various weapons—
अबलानां समूहस्छेद्बलिनो ऽस्मान्विजेष्यते
If a group of powerless ones defeats us, though we are strong—
ऊह्यमानमिदं हन्तुं परिहासाय कल्प्यते
This attempt to destroy us is being made as a mockery.
अस्मत्सैनिकनासीरभटेभ्यो ऽपि भवेद्भयम्
Even our fierce soldiers would feel fear from these killers of our army.
ब्रह्मादयश्च निर्विण्णविग्रहा मद्बलायुधैः
Even Brahma and the others, their forms dispirited, have been subdued by my strength and weapons.
अन्येषामिह का वार्ता दिक्पालास्ते पलायिताः
What need is there to speak of others here? The guardians of the directions have fled.
सर्वत्र विद्धवर्माणो दुर्मदा विबुधाः कृताः
Everywhere, the arrogant gods have been wounded and their armor pierced.
अस्माकंविजयायाद्य स्त्री काचिदभिधावति
Today, for our victory, a certain woman is rushing forward.
अल्पो ऽपि रिपुरात्मज्ञैर्नावमान्यो जिगीषुभिः
Even a small enemy, if known to be wise, should not be underestimated by those who wish to conquer.
सकचग्रहमाकृष्य सानेतव्या मदोद्धता
Seize her by the hair and drag her here, for she is mad with pride.
चिरेण चेटिकाभावं सा दुष्टा संश्रयिष्यति
In time, that wicked woman will accept the condition of a slave-girl.
