तमालश्यामलाकाराः कपिलाः क्रूरलोचनाः
Dark as tamāla trees, tawny, with fierce eyes, they stood ready.
अथ श्रीदण्डनाथा च करिचक्ररथोत्तमात्
Then, from the best of elephant-chariot cars, Śrī Daṇḍanāthā appeared.
वज्रघोष इति ख्यातं धूतकेसरमण्डलम्
Her lion, known as Vajraghoṣa, had a mane that shook like thunder.
दंष्ट्राकटकटत्कारबधिरीकृतदिक्तटम्
Its gnashing fangs made a rattling sound that deafened the quarters.
विबन्तमिव भूचक्रमापातालं निमज्जिभिः
It seemed as if the earth's surface was being swallowed by those plunging jaws.
सिंहवाहनमारुह्य व्यचलद्दण्डनायिका
Mounting her lion vehicle, Daṇḍanāyikā set out.
उद्वेगं बहुलं प्राप त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्
Great fear arose in the three worlds, among all moving and unmoving beings.
किं वा मुसलघातेन भूमिं द्वेधा करिष्यति
Will she split the earth in two with a blow from her mace?
इति त्रस्तहृदः सर्वे गगने नाकिनां गणाः
Thus, with hearts filled with fear, all the hosts of celestial beings in the sky—
मुहुर्द्वादशनामानि कीर्तयन्तो नभस्तले
Repeatedly reciting the twelve names in the expanse of the heavens—
अश्वानन महाप्राज्ञ येषु मे कौतुकं महत्
O wise one with the face of a horse, among these, I have great curiosity—
पञ्चमी दण्डनाथा च संकेता समयेश्वरी
Pañcamī, Daṇḍanāthā, Saṃketā, and Samayeśvarī—
वार्ताली च महासेनाप्याज्ञा चक्रेश्वरी तथा
Vārtālī, Mahāsenā, Ājñā, and Cakreśvarī as well—
संकटे दुःखमाप्नोति न कदाचन मानवः
In times of distress, a human never suffers—
तेषामनुग्रहार्थाय प्रचचालच सा पुनः
For the sake of granting them favor, she moved again—
निर्याणसूचनकरी दिवि दध्वान काहली
The Kāhalī, sounding in the sky, signaled the departure—
वीणासंयतपाणीनां शक्तीनां निर्ययौ बलम्
The force of the Śaktis, with hands poised on vīṇās, set out—
वीणावेणुमृदङ्गाद्याः सविलासपदक्रमाः
With vīṇās, flutes, mṛdaṅgas, and other instruments, proceeding with graceful steps—
मयूरवाहनाः काश्चित्कतिचिद्धंसवाहनाः
Some rode on peacocks, and a few on swans—
सर्वाश्च श्यामलाकाराः काश्चित्कर्णीरथस्थिताः
All were of dark complexion; some stood upon chariots drawn by elephants—
मन्त्रनाथां पुरस्कृत्य संप्रचेलुः पुरः पुरः
Led by the mistress of mantras, they advanced, one after another—
बालार्कवर्णकवचा मदालोलविलोचना
Clad in armor shining like the rising sun, their eyes intoxicated with pride—
प्रेक्षयन्ती कटाक्षौधौः किञ्चिद्भ्रूवल्लिताण्डवैः
Casting sidelong glances, with brows slightly arched in dance—
पिच्छत्रिकोणच्छत्रेण बिरुदेन महीयसा
With a peacock-feathered, three-cornered parasol and a great banner—
निर्जगाम घनश्यामश्यामला मन्त्रनायिका
The dark-hued leader of mantras emerged, radiant in deep blue—
तानि षोडशनामानि शृणु कुंभसमुद्भव
Hear now, O one born from the jar, these sixteen names—
मन्त्रिणी सचिवेशी च प्रधानेशी शुकप्रिया
She is the minister, the chief counselor, the foremost leader, and beloved of the parrot.
निपप्रिया कदंबेशी कदंबवनवासिनी
She is dear to Nipa, sovereign of the Kadamba trees, and dweller in the Kadamba grove.
तस्य त्रैलोक्यमखिलं हस्ते तिष्ठत्यसंशयम्
All the three worlds, without doubt, remain in her hand.
तत्रतत्र गताशङ्कं शत्रुसैन्यं पतत्यलम्
Wherever she goes, the enemy's army falls completely, losing all hope.
