अत्यन्तोत्तुङ्गवर्ष्माणं कविकाविलसन्मुखम्
She was of exceedingly tall stature, her face shining like the moon.
स्थूलवालधिविक्षेपक्षिप्यमाणपयोधरम्
Her large, waving tail scattered the clouds as she moved.
वादयन्तमिवोच्चण्डैः खुरनिष्ठुरकुट्टनैः
She seemed to play music with the fierce, harsh pounding of her hooves.
घोषमाणं प्रति मुहुः संदर्शितगतिक्रमम्
She repeatedly resounded, displaying her sequence of movements.
भाण्डैर्मनोहरैर्युक्तं घर्घरीजालमण्डितम्
Adorned with charming ornaments, she was decorated with a network of jingling bells.
अश्वारूढा महादेवी समारूढा हयं ययौ
The great goddess, mounted on a horse, rode forth.
हयवल्गां च दधती बहुविक्रमशोभिनी
Holding the horse's reins, she shone with manifold valor.
सञ्चचाल हयारूढा नर्तयन्तीव वाजिनम्
Mounted on the horse, she moved, as if making the steed dance.
उद्दण्डसिन्धुनिस्वानश्चकार बधिरं जगत्
The thunderous sound of the Sindhu river rendered the world deaf.
अन्युद्धतभुजाश्मानः शक्तयः काश्चिदुच्छ्रिताः
Some weapons, raised high, had arms of stone, brandished by others.
खड्गं फलकमादाय पुप्लुवुश्चण्डसक्तयः
Seizing swords and shields, the fierce warriors leapt forward.
निवारयन्त्यो वेत्रिण्यो व्युच्छलन्ति स्मशक्तयः
The victorious women, blocking the way, brandished their spears.
सिहाङ्काश्चैव बिभ्राणाः शक्तयो व्यचलन्पुरा
Some warriors, roaring like lions, advanced bearing their spears.
स्फुरत्कराः प्रचलिताः शक्तयः काश्चिदाददुः
With flashing hands, some warriors seized their spears and rushed forth.
छत्रैर्गगनमारेजे निःसंख्याशशिमण्डितम्
Countless parasols, adorned with moon-like jewels, filled the sky.
तिमिरं नुनुदे भूयस्तत्काण्डमणिरोचिषा
The darkness was dispelled by the radiance of those jewel-tipped parasols.
तालवृन्ताः शतविधाः क्रोडमुख्या बले ऽचलन्
Hundreds of palm-leaf fans, led by the chief, moved in the army's embrace.
ज्वलत्केशापिशङ्गाभास्तडिद्भासुरदिङ्मुखाः
With flaming hair and bodies shining like lightning, they faced all directions.
प्रचेलुर्दण्डनाथायास्सेना नासीरधाविताः
The army of Daṇḍanāthā advanced, their swords unsheathed and ready.
तत्समानायुधकरास्तत्समानस्ववाहनाः
They carried weapons and rode vehicles equal to those of their opponents.
तमालश्यामलाकाराः कपिलाः क्रूरलोचनाः
Dark as tamāla trees, tawny, with fierce eyes, they stood ready.
अथ श्रीदण्डनाथा च करिचक्ररथोत्तमात्
Then, from the best of elephant-chariot cars, Śrī Daṇḍanāthā appeared.
वज्रघोष इति ख्यातं धूतकेसरमण्डलम्
Her lion, known as Vajraghoṣa, had a mane that shook like thunder.
दंष्ट्राकटकटत्कारबधिरीकृतदिक्तटम्
Its gnashing fangs made a rattling sound that deafened the quarters.
विबन्तमिव भूचक्रमापातालं निमज्जिभिः
It seemed as if the earth's surface was being swallowed by those plunging jaws.
सिंहवाहनमारुह्य व्यचलद्दण्डनायिका
Mounting her lion vehicle, Daṇḍanāyikā set out.
उद्वेगं बहुलं प्राप त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्
Great fear arose in the three worlds, among all moving and unmoving beings.
किं वा मुसलघातेन भूमिं द्वेधा करिष्यति
Will she split the earth in two with a blow from her mace?
इति त्रस्तहृदः सर्वे गगने नाकिनां गणाः
Thus, with hearts filled with fear, all the hosts of celestial beings in the sky—
मुहुर्द्वादशनामानि कीर्तयन्तो नभस्तले
Repeatedly reciting the twelve names in the expanse of the heavens—
