आराधिता भगवती सा वः श्रेयो विधास्यति
If the blessed goddess is propitiated, she will bestow welfare upon you.
तपसे कृतसन्नाहो ययौ हैमवतं तटम्
Having prepared himself for austerity, he went to the bank of the Himavat.
इन्द्रप्रस्थमभून्नाम्रा तदाद्यखिलसिद्धिदम्
Then Indraprastha became the foremost place, granting all accomplishments.
देव्यास्तु महतीं पूजां जपध्यानरतात्मनाम्
They performed great worship of the goddess, absorbed in recitation and meditation.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि दशाहानि च संययुः
Ten thousand years and ten days passed in this way.
भण्डासुरं समभ्येत्य निजगाद पुरोहितः
Approaching Bhaṇḍāsura, the priest spoke to him.
निर्भयास्त्रिषु लोकेषु चरन्तीच्छविहारिणः
You roam the three worlds without fear, moving as you wish.
तेनैव निर्मिता माया यया संमोहितो भवान्
By that very illusion which he created, you have been deluded.
भवतां विजयार्थाय करोतीन्द्रो महत्तपः
For your defeat, Indra is performing great austerity.
गत्वा हैमवतं शैलं परेषां विघ्नमाचर
Go to the Himavat mountain and create obstacles for the others.
मन्त्रिवृद्धानु पाहूय यथावृत्तान्तमाह सः
After summoning the ministers and elders, he spoke as the events had occurred.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणां राज्यं तव शिवार्पितम्
Your reign, dedicated to Shiva, shall last for sixty thousand years.
अशक्यप्रतिकार्यो ऽयं यः कालशिवचोदितः
This, prompted by Time and Shiva, cannot be counteracted.
काले तु भोगः कर्त्तव्यो दुःखस्य च सुखस्य वा
At the appointed time, one must experience enjoyment, whether of sorrow or happiness.
क्रियाविघ्ने कृते ऽस्माभिर्विजयस्ते भविष्यति
If we cause an obstacle to the rite, your victory will come to pass.
दत्ता विद्या शिवेनैव तस्मात्ते विजयः सदा
The knowledge was granted by Shiva himself; therefore, your victory is assured always.
निर्गत्य सहसेनाभिर्ययौ हैमवतं तटम्
Departing with his army, he went to the bank of the Himalayas.
अलङ्घ्यमकरोदग्रे महाप्राकारमुज्ज्वलम्
At the forefront, he constructed an impassable, splendid great rampart.
संक्रुद्धो दानवास्त्रेण बभञ्जातिबलेन तु
Angered, he broke it with the weapon of the demons, by his immense strength.
वायव्यास्त्रेण तं धीरो बभञ्ज च ननाद च
With the wind weapon, the resolute one shattered it and roared.
एतद्दृष्ट्वा तु दैत्येन्द्रो विषण्मः स्वपुरं ययौ
Seeing this, the lord of the demons, disheartened, went to his own city.
भयाद्विव्यथिरे देवा विमुक्तसकलक्रियाः
Out of fear, the gods were distressed, abandoning all their rites.
अशक्यः समरे योद्धुमस्माभिरखिलैरपि
He cannot be fought by us in battle, not even by all together.
कुण्डं योजनविस्तारं सम्यक्कृत्वा तु शोभनम्
Making a beautiful altar, a yojana in breadth, properly.
यजामः परमां शाक्तिं महामासैर्वयं सुराः
We, the gods, shall worship the supreme power with great offerings.
एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वेदेवाः सेन्द्रपुरोगमाः
Thus addressed, all those gods, led by Indra, acted accordingly.
हुतेषु सर्वमांसेषु पादेषु च करेषु च
When all the flesh was offered, on feet and on hands as well.
प्रादुर्बभूव परमन्तेजः पुञ्जो ह्यनुत्तमः
A supreme, unmatched mass of brilliance appeared.
तन्मध्ये तु महादेवीमुदयार्कसमप्रभाम्
In the midst of that, the great goddess shone with radiance equal to the rising sun.
सौन्दर्यसारसीमां तामानन्दरससागराम्
She was the very limit of beauty, an ocean of the essence of bliss.
