उग्रकर्मोग्रधन्वा च विजयश्रुति पारगः
He was fierce in deeds, wielded terrible weapons, and was renowned for victory.
चतस्रो वनितास्तस्य बभूवुः प्रियदर्शनाः
He had four wives, all of lovely appearance.
स्यन्दनास्तुरगा नागाः पादाताश्च सहस्रशः
He had thousands of chariots, horses, elephants, and foot soldiers.
बभूवुर्दानवाः सर्वे भृगुपुत्रमतानुगाः
All the Dānavas became followers of the son of Bhṛgu.
गृहेगृहे च यज्ञाश्च संबभूवुः समन्ततः
In every household, sacrifices were performed everywhere.
प्रवर्तन्ते स्म दैत्यानां भूयः प्रतिगृहं तदा
At that time, the rites of the Daityas began again in each home.
तथा यज्ञेषु दैत्यानां बुभुजुर्हव्यभोजिनः
And in the sacrifices of the Daityas, those who consume the oblations partook.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि व्यतीतानि क्षणार्धवत्
Sixty thousand years passed as if in half a moment.
हीयमानबलं चेन्द्रं संप्रेक्ष्य कमलापतिः
Seeing Indra's strength diminishing, the Lord of Lotus observed.
तामुवाच ततो मायां देवदेवो जनार्दनः
Then the god of gods, Janardana, spoke to Māyā.
विचरस्व यथाकामं त्वां न ज्ञास्यति कश्चन
Roam as you wish; no one will recognize you.
मोहयित्वाचिरेणैव विषयानुपभोक्ष्यसे
Soon, after deluding them, you will enjoy the pleasures.
ययाचे ऽप्सरसो मुख्याः सहायार्थं तु काश्चन
She requested some chief Apsarases for assistance.
प्रययौ मानसस्याग्यं तटमुज्ज्वलभूरुहम्
She went to the shining, tree-laden bank of the Mānasa lake.
निवासमकरोद्रम्यं गायन्ती मधुरस्वरम्
There she made a delightful dwelling, singing with a sweet voice.
श्रुत्वा तु वीणानिनदं ददर्श च वराङ्गनाम्
Hearing the sound of the vīṇā, he saw the beautiful woman.
मायामये महागर्ते पतितो मदनाभिधे
He fell into the great illusory pit called Madana.
अथास्य मन्त्रिणो ऽभूवन्त्दृदये स्मरतापि ताः
Then his ministers also became attached to those women in their hearts.
तैश्च संप्रर्थितास्ताश्च प्रतिशूश्रुवुरञ्जसा
And when entreated by them, those women readily agreed.
ता लब्ध्वा मोहिनीमुख्या निर्वृतिं परमां ययुः
Having obtained the chief enchantress, they attained supreme delight.
विजहुस्ते तथा यज्ञक्रियाश्चान्याः शुभावहाः
Thus, they abandoned sacrifices and other auspicious rites.
मुहूर्त्तमिव तेषां तु ययावब्दायुतं तदा
For them, ten thousand years passed like a single moment.
विमुक्तोपद्रवा ब्रह्मन्नामोदं परमं ययुः
Freed from all afflictions, O Brahman, they attained supreme joy.
सर्वदेवैः परिवृतं नारदो मुनिराययौ
The sage Nārada arrived, surrounded by all the gods.
कृताञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा देवेशो वाक्यमब्रवीत्
With hands joined in reverence, the lord of the gods spoke these words.
तत्रैव गमनं ते स्याद्यं धन्यं कर्तुमिच्छसि
If you wish, you may now go there to perform that blessed act.
अशेषदुःखान्युत्तीर्य कृतार्थः स्यां मुनीश्वर
Having crossed all sufferings, I would become fulfilled, O lord of sages.
तया विमुक्तो लोकांस्त्रीन्दहेताग्निरिवापरः
Freed by her, he would burn the worlds like another fire of destruction.
तस्य तेजो ऽपहारस्तु कर्तव्यो ऽतिबलस्य तु
But the radiance of that exceedingly powerful one must be taken away.
अशक्यो ऽन्येन तपसा कल्पकोटिशतैरपि
By no other austerity, even in hundreds of millions of aeons, can this be accomplished.
