तद्भस्मना तु पुरुषं चित्राकारं चकार सः
With those ashes, he fashioned a man of wondrous form.
महाबलो ऽतितेजस्वी मध्याह्नार्कसमप्रभः
He was exceedingly strong, of intense brilliance, radiant as the midday sun.
स्तुहि वाल महादेवं स तु सर्वार्थसिद्धिदः
O child, praise Mahadeva, the bestower of all attainments.
ननाम शतशो रुद्रं शतरुद्रियमाजपन्
He bowed hundreds of times to Rudra, reciting the Śatarudriya hymn.
वरेण च्छन्दयामास वरं वव्रे स बालकः
He offered him a boon of his choice, and the boy chose his boon.
तदस्त्रशस्त्रमुख्यानि वृथा कुर्वन्तु नो मम
May all the foremost weapons and missiles become powerless against me.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि राज्यमस्मै ददौ पुनः
He again granted him the kingdom for sixty thousand years.
यदुवाच ततो नाम्ना भण्डो लोकेषु कथ्यते
From then on, he became known in the worlds by the name Bhaṇḍa.
दत्त्वास्त्राणि च शस्त्राणि तत्रैवान्तरधाच्च सः
Having given him weapons and missiles, he thereupon disappeared.
तस्माद्रौद्रस्वभावो हि दानवश्चाभवत्ततः
From him, a demon of fierce nature was then born.
समायाताश्च शतशो दैतेयाः सुमहाबलाः
Hundreds of mighty Daityas also assembled.
नियुक्तो भृगुपुत्रेण निजगादार्थवद्वचः
Appointed by the son of Bhṛgu, he spoke meaningful words.
तद्गत्वा शोणितपुरं कुरुष्व त्वं यथापुरम्
Go, therefore, to the city of Śoṇita and act as before.
चक्रे ऽमरपुरप्रख्यं मनसैवेक्षणेन तु
By mere thought, he created a city resembling the city of the immortals.
शुशभे परया लक्ष्म्या तेजसा च समन्वितः
He shone with supreme beauty and was endowed with brilliance.
दधौ भृगुसुतोत्सृष्टं भण्डो बालार्कसन्निभम्
Bhaṇḍa bore what was given by the son of Bhṛgu, radiant like the rising sun.
न रोगो न च दुःखानि संदधौ यन्निषेवणात्
By his service, there was neither disease nor suffering.
यस्य च्छायानिषण्णास्तु बाध्यन्ते नास्त्रकोटिभिः
Those who sat in his shade were not harmed even by millions of weapons.
अन्यान्यपि महार्हाणि भूषणानि प्रदत्तवान्
He also gave other exceedingly precious ornaments.
बभूवातीव तेजस्वी रत्नमुत्तेजितं यथा
He became exceedingly radiant, like a jewel made more lustrous.
उग्रकर्मोग्रधन्वा च विजयश्रुति पारगः
He was fierce in deeds, wielded terrible weapons, and was renowned for victory.
चतस्रो वनितास्तस्य बभूवुः प्रियदर्शनाः
He had four wives, all of lovely appearance.
स्यन्दनास्तुरगा नागाः पादाताश्च सहस्रशः
He had thousands of chariots, horses, elephants, and foot soldiers.
बभूवुर्दानवाः सर्वे भृगुपुत्रमतानुगाः
All the Dānavas became followers of the son of Bhṛgu.
गृहेगृहे च यज्ञाश्च संबभूवुः समन्ततः
In every household, sacrifices were performed everywhere.
प्रवर्तन्ते स्म दैत्यानां भूयः प्रतिगृहं तदा
At that time, the rites of the Daityas began again in each home.
तथा यज्ञेषु दैत्यानां बुभुजुर्हव्यभोजिनः
And in the sacrifices of the Daityas, those who consume the oblations partook.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि व्यतीतानि क्षणार्धवत्
Sixty thousand years passed as if in half a moment.
हीयमानबलं चेन्द्रं संप्रेक्ष्य कमलापतिः
Seeing Indra's strength diminishing, the Lord of Lotus observed.
तामुवाच ततो मायां देवदेवो जनार्दनः
Then the god of gods, Janardana, spoke to Māyā.
